2020 Trade Targets

Community Moderator

We haven’t had a post in the Transaction Rumors / Proposals forum in nearly 4 months, so I am putting that unprecedented hiatus to an end.

With the possibility of the season beginning in less than 10 days, what better time to look at candidates who could be traded prior to the August deadline. Admittedly, I don’t expect to see much movement this year. Still, there is a chance some teams will shuffle less heralded players, or even start roster building for 2021 and beyond.

Baseball Trade Values released an article titled, Most Likely to be Traded: Position Players.

Certainly some lackluster names included in their list, but a few non-rentals with “medium trade probability” that standout include Trey Mancini, Niko Goodrum, and Josh Bell. If the Brewers do make trades in-season I would guess it is more likely they will add role players, but that doesn’t mean we can’t daydream about all of the possibilities.

Who are your favorite 2020 trade targets?

Edit: Yikes, I completely missed that Trey Mancini was diagnosed with stage-3 colon cancer a few months ago and had surgery to remove a tumor. Looks like he will miss this season. Hoping the best for him in his recovery.

With such a short season, virtually anything can happen. But I can see some teams get off to a slow start and do a quick sell off - especially of guys eligible for free agency after the season.

With only 60 games, it's not going to be easy to dig out of a big hole if a team starts out badly. So there's no point in delaying trading players.

That said, anyone can play well for 30 games - so even bad teams can look like contenders halfway through the year. So I doubt anyone makes any big moves quickly. But once a team goes in the tank - it will be sell off time.

Josh Bell for the next 3 seasons? Do the Brewers actually have the prospects to pull that off? The Pirates one would assume would want a huge haul from the division rival Brewers.

But yeah, if they could swing that, Yelich, Hiura, Bell in the middle of the order...that'd be deadly. L/R/S. Balanced lineup...you'd have to assume the DH is here to stay. That could be as good of a trio as we've had...ever.

Watching Robbie Ray’s start against the Padres tonight, and he’s struck out 5 of the first 8 batters so far as Trent Grisham comes to the plate now. He looks just outstanding, especially with his newly adjusted pre-throw arm motion. I’ll be rooting for the Diamondbacks to go in the tank because I would like for this to be the year the Brewers execute a trade involving Ray. He’s a free agent at season’s end.

Surprise, surprise. He's still a guy that can't go deep into games and doesn't know where the ball is going half the time. Hard, hard pass.

Which is probably a good sign that he'd thrive on the Brewers. We had starters go through an order 3 times fewer than any team in history last year.

Counsell doesn't like pitchers to pitch 3 times through...so if he can dominate the first 2 times and hand it to the pen...don't see much of a problem.

Except that the cost to bring him in will likely not be worth what you'd get out of him in that case.

Some players to keep an eye on for trade deadline...all in final year of contract. Depending on how their teams fair.

Alex Colome - White Sox

Brad Hand - Indians (2021 option)

Kirby Yates - Padres

Ken Giles - Blue Jays (injury concern)

Justin Wilson - Mets

Tony Watson - Giants

With Boston open to trading anyone on their roster, would the Brewers have a shot at bringing in someone like Xander Bogaerts to man shortstop for the foreseeable future? He has 6 years and $120 million left on his deal, but does have an opt out after the 2023 season. If he is willing to opt in, I would be much more inclined to bring him in.

How would a trade like this sound to you?

If he were to opt in, it would take him through his age 33 season. Braun’s money is off the books after this season. Plus Bogaerts would add that big bat to pair with Yelich and Hiura for a long time. It would also allow Hiura to become the DH full time.

2B Urias

DH Hiura

LF Yelich

SS Bogaerts

RF Garcia

C Narvaez

CF Cain

3B

1B

What would it take to get Michael Chavis? He was primarily a 3B in the minors but he's blocked by Devers. Has the kind of power bat from right side that could be a nice fit on a corner infield spot and those are the biggest needs.

Pass. Chavis is basically Moustakas without the power.

Huh?

He hit 31 HR and slugged .563 in minors in 2017.

He hit 9 HR in under 200 PA in 2018 and slugged .538

Last year he hit 18 major league HR and 7 at AAA.

I can see passing on him if Arcia and Urias show their the SS/3B combo for the next couple years, but not because he lacks power.

I think Briggs is right- he's show a solid amount of power, including in his age 23 MLB season last year. I think he's young, controlled, and could be very interesting for a team like Milwaukee. He graded out as a solid 1B last year (his overall defensive numbers were dragged down by below average play in his innings as a 2B), so he might be a good fit there for the long-term.

I think cost, not potential power, are is the factor that would keep the Brewers from legitimate interest. I think he's a 30+ HR guy over the next few seasons.

Puig just sitting out there as a free agent. I don’t think I could stomach it but he’s there.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I am surprised we haven't heard more about Mitch Moreland as a possibility to fill in at 1B and DH this season. He's a left-handed batter. He has a $3 million option for next season ($500K buyout). Over 53 plate appearances this season he's currently batting, .348 BA / .434 OBP / .804 SLG / 1.238 OPS, including 6 home runs.

With Logan Morrison out of the mix, and 28-man rosters there may be a spot for him to replace someone like Brock Holt? Moreland could potentially be a huge upgrade to the Brewers lineup versus right handed pitchers.

The Brewers do have a club option for 2021 on Holt which may sway them to keep him on the roster even though he has struggled early on. It is for $5 million, but if he were to carry the .360+ OBP he has the last two seasons, it would be well worth it. I don’t feel like 24 at bats for Holt in 2020 is enough to cut bait at this point.

I think you're probably right, they aren't likely to move on from him this season. I know he had the ankle injury before the season started, but to this point he hasn't been able to find any consistent playing time among the current platoons. He has started just 8 games (7 at 3B, 1 at RF) so far, but I guess an argument could be made that he can also provide a valuable defensive replacement.

I guess Moreland is probably unlikely unless someone gets injured, but it's nice to daydream about having some hotter bats in this lineup to pair with the outstanding pitching we've enjoyed thus far.

If he had played some OF the last couple of years, yes, but acquiring him means that Braun has to be the Brewers everyday RF and they would only have four regular OFs on the roster. I think their resources are better spent trying to find someone who can play OF or 3B.

I think Cain opting out meant the Brewers could no longer carry Morrison and needed someone who could play OF if necessary, thus why Brock Holt is on the roster.

I could obviously be proven wrong, but I have a hard time believing the Brewers DFA’d Brock Holt to fill his spot with Jace Peterson for the remainder of the season. Tyrone Taylor has reportedly been performing outstanding in Appleton, so if this was a long-term play it seems like Taylor may have been the choice. I have a feeling the Holt DFA increases the chances the Brewers will add a hitter via trade at some point in the coming week.
