A little surprising, I guess. I assumed he was doing the 'organizational soldier' thing with the last game, but I wonder if the push-back was far more severe than their F.O. expected.

He'll get another crack at it for sure. Honestly, I'm glad in a way that Zimmer and Nagy are safe, as Pederson seems likely to have success elsewhere and I don't want him close to the North.

Zimmer, I understand, as the Vikings scrapped the expensive parts of the defense, and plugged in a lot of rookies, particularly in the secondary.

I have no idea what the "plan" is in Chicago, where their starting quarterback is now a free agent, and the backup QB they traded for to replace that QB was benched for said mediocre starter....who only managed to put up 9 points in a playoff game the team backed into (6 of which were scored on the last play of the game).

Considering Foles is on the roster for another 2 years, I have to wonder whether today's firing gives Chicago's front office something to think about.

I don't believe Nagy's the problem in Chicago though. He's just operating under such constraints with Trubisky at QB.

Chicago is a pretty talented team...with an average(at best) player at the most important position. Just the last time we played the Bears, they had a chance to make that a good game, and Trubisky just threw one of those really bad picks to Amos.

In the end though, if I were the Bears, I'd try to go and get Lance and hire Bieniemy. Foles is on the books for two more years and it makes no sense to cut him this year, so put the offense in, let Lance learn it for at least a year, and then throw him in there.

But hopefully, they decide bringing back Trubisky is their best option...

The not so hidden secret in the NFL is that the Eagles' run to SB Champs was more Frank Reich than Doug Peterson. Reich gets his own gig and Philly's offense and Wentz turn into pumpkins. And given the fact that Peterson gives his D Coordinators free reign to do their thing, Dougie doesn't have much to stand on when his offensive genius is cast in doubt.

2017 was just an an odd year in the NFC and that allowed a weaker champion to emerge from the conference:

- Brett Hundley started 9 games for the Packers

- Seahawks missed the playoffs for the only time in the Wilson/Carrol era

- Cowboys predictably regressed to 9-7 after going 13-3 in 2016

- SF was starting to compete again and won 6 of 7 after starting 0-9

As if the Ravens didn't look like big enough turds in their win the Steelers are looking like bigger turds in their loss. It's one thing to think to yourself and tell your teammates that the team that just beat you is crap but when you start putting it on social media and telling it to reporters you look like an idiot.

Someone get this dude a financial advisor. What kind of person who has made over 100M in his career takes out a loan with 16% interest??

Young guys who don't come from money. These guys' agents should require their players to have financial advisors handling their money...but of course, they aren't going to risk upsetting their players by doing that.

But we've been hearing about this for years now. I'm surprised he hasn't filed for bankruptcy. I'm even more surprised he didn't even have a lawyer representing him in court.

There's an ESPN 30-for-30 special on bankruptcy in pro sports which is absolutely worth watching. Not really any different than all those lottery winners who go broke shortly after. Mohammad Ali's first trainer would tell about how these young boxers would leave a meeting with a promoter with a deal for $2+million with all but a signature. Don King would swoop in immediately after to have his own meeting, where he would proceed to plop a bag of $1million in cash right on the table, and the boxers would sign it because it was immediate.

I always admired that big hitter from the Phillies. Howard? Despite the pile of money he was making, his paychecks went directly to his mother, who then gave him an allowance. Smart lady.

After learning the Rams and 49ers will each get two 3rd round compensatory picks for losing minority staffers to other organizations (where they took promotions), I can’t help help but be salty about the Packers losing their entire coaching staff and personnel department to the Seahawks in 1999 and getting jack squat in compensation.

Didn't Eddie Lacy hire (or some former Packer) hire a financial advisor that ended up embezzling his money? Money is nice if you can manage it without it managing you.

Honestly, they should probably hire two: one to make decisions and one to audit the first guy. A player’s agent should just keep a CPA on staff to periodically review the actions of the financial advisor.

I don't get this. Is the writer of this article saying that Dalton is the #2 pick of the 2011 draft?

That's how it reads. I guess he meant a 2nd round pick for the 2nd overall pick, but it was really needlessly confusing.

Really don't get why Dallas wouldn't just go with Dak. You know what he has, he's a leader(I guess, the players seem to respect him). And he's still in his prime. If he's not back from injury, then something went very wrong as he should be back in plenty of time for the start of the season.

Dallas might be concerned regarding the cost for Dak & the rest of the various salaries vs the cap....

I'm sure they are, but with the way they do their contracts, they're actually in really good position regarding the cap. Not good enough that they can franchise Dak again, but where they could extend him without losing anyone.

I can never figure Dallas out. I guess they've just had terrible coaching because they've got a ton of talent on that roster. I wonder if there is any thought to trying to move up from 10 into the top 3-5 to get a QB. Fields or Wilson with those WR'ers and Zeke could be a really dangerous fit.

I think it's more likely they just extend Dak and try and fix that defense. The best thing they can do is just fire McCarthy and move on. I used to defend Mikey because I thought he and Clement were responsible for developing Rodgers...but it's really obvious now even if that is true, he's also responsible for holding him back for nearly a decade.

Bleacher Report seems to say that Deshaun Watson is all but done in Houston. One person was saying a reasonable trade with the Jets would be three first-rounders. Makes me wonder what Miami really thinks of Tua.

I saw one mock draft where they had Miami trade Tua and their 2 firsts. Will be interesting to watch going forward.

Remember what Yoda said:

I think his grievances are legitimate, but this isn’t the NBA. You can’t just be done with a team a year after signing a new contract. What a horrible precedent this would set.

I don't think it'd set any precedent. Players have demanded to be traded for a long time and either gotten their way or the team hasn't given in and they've stayed and played with their team.

It probably makes more sense for the Texans to trade him at this point than move forward with him...if not for the nearly 70 million dollar cap hit.

They'd have to decide they were going to totally rebuild, and they'd have to get back a ton to make it worth it. Otherwise, the Texans can just refuse and Watson really has no option.

Drew Brees' career is interesting to me. Drafted in 2001 with LaDainian Tomlinson - Chargers drafted two HOF players and didn't win anything with them. He ends up replacing Doug Flutie (another smaller QB - though 2" shorter) to whom he was compared.

He then endures the drama of the 2004 draft between drafting Eli Manning (1st overall) and trading for Phillip Rivers (FYI, Larry Fitzgerald was drafted 3rd - Imagine Brees, LDT, and Fitzgerald all together). Brees did have some early injury issues, but still put up good numbers when healthy.

He leaves SD in free agency and signs with NO for a "prove-it" level contract and the rest is history. I always like the Chargers as my AFC team (even going back to Dan Fouts), but they are as ineptly run team as any in the NFL.

For Brees, I only have respect for the guy. A bit of an underdog coming out of college and coming from the Big10. There is much I didn't like NO, but Brees always seemed to be a good guy and great QB.
