2020 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

As much as I'm really intrigued by Bitsko (think the TB developement group will turn him into a stud), can't complain at all about the Mitchell pick.

Floor seems really high with the speed/defense/arm combo in CF. Even if he stays more slash & dash and ends up in the 100-110 OPS+ range you're still talking about a 3-ish WAR guy.

If he stays in CF, and it looks like he will, he won't have to hit for a lot of power to have value. Diabetes is a bad thing, reminded of Dylan Covey.

Completely different. Mitchell has dealt with it his whole life almost. He has it completely managed. Covey literally had zero clue about until he had his physical. It was a bomb just dropped on him & life alternating. He went to college, learned how to manage it and still became a big league pitcher. Sure in his first 3 full seasons he has been pretty darn bad but that has more to do with his pitching than his diabetes.

I’ve coached many kids with type 1 and for most, it is just a way of life for them. Would never even know if it wasn’t for paperwork & conversation with parents. It’s really amazing to see the maturity & responsibility they possess to not let it impact or control their lives. I have feeling Mitchell fits in that category. Kid has been living with it since 3rd grade & became high school all-American, one of the most elite athletes in his sport, and a 1st round pick. Medical staff will be there monitoring it with him to make sure.

Not sure if this is good or bad, but for a current player comp, Mitchell reminds me of a left handed batting AJ Pollock.

Could lead off and was a good value pick at where we got him.

Solid player but with limited upside IMO.

ESPN compared him to Trea Turner. Obviously the upside is always less if you go college over high school, but I think they took the top player left on their board. I’m happy

Hey! I’ll take it! Now we have two Trae Turner’s! Turner has been my favorite Como for Turang since drafted!

Bitsko was very intriguing at 20 however I mentioned it early in trend pre-draft that now I just cross off all high school arms in first round. Brewers don’t seem to value them as highly due to the risk they come with. We have seen year after year them pass on very talented young arms in first. Once Seid passed away, starting with Montgomery and now Stearns analytics led by Johnson it has seemed to become a trend. Moreover, you can see it in international signings. In Stearns era they have yet to really shell out big bonuses on young pitchers and invest heavily in bats. They spend very modestly on pitchers in that market.

Think come 2nd round is where you start to see those arms start to come into view. Could very well be wrong though. Just my observation

Was a regular on the site for a long time, been away for a while. Came back because I'm excited about this pick. And one of the first posts I see is this ignorant BS... good grief! :angry

Yes, saw his interview regarding it after his pick. Seems like he has figured out how to keep it under control and he has been dealing with it for 9 years. Non-issue

Welcome back though

I was hoping to do this before the draft, but ran out of time. Below is an aggregated ranking of the top 325 players in this draft class using the final draft rankings from five highly regarded sources, including Perfect Game, Baseball America, The Athletic (Keith Law), Fangraphs (Eric Longenhagen), and MLB Pipeline (Callis and Mayo). I figured this could be a good source for people to reference headed into day two of the MLB Draft.

The Brewers remaining draft selections are at picks: #53, #92, #121, #151

Players listed in bold were selected on day one of the MLB Draft (1st round and supplemental round A). Brewers selection Garrett Mitchell slotted in at #9 on these combined rankings. If you are looking for the Red Sox 1st round selection, Nick Yorke, he is ranked at #154.

I like the idea with Mitchell but I have my doubts about our ability to develop his swing. It's a ground ball, gap swing and we haven't shown we can make the necessary adjustments on those types of hitter to add power (prime example: Brice Turang - who is still far too much of a light hitter for my liking). He's toolsy as hell and he'll be an every day center fielder for sure. I know he said UCLA coaches wanted him to be a contact guy due to his speed so I'll hold out some hope for the power to come. He's going to be an XBH machine due to his speed and ability to make contact so there's a lot to like even without the power.

Also, we ran that clock all the way down before putting in the card for Mitchell, which tells me we really wanted PCA, who I would've killed for just for his generational CF defensive ability. I'll hold out a ton of hope for Mitchell due to the tools and his own defensive ability but I don't expect the power to develop at all. We haven't shown we can develop hitters in recent memory. And, no, Keston Hiura doesn't count. That kid was hitting no matter where he was drafted.

Isn't that a little harsh for someone who has put up solid numbers and can't even legally drink for 6 months? Turang has done nothing wrong in his career.

Almost all sports leagues try to maximize advertising revenue in their drafts, especially the first rounders. The Brewers said this was a no-brainer pick, I believe them. Reading into the time on the clock when the card was turned in isn't really accurate.

No? It's factual. Turang is a light hitter. It's shown by his power numbers. He has a very low career ISO at all levels. 632 at bats and 36 career XBH which is good for a .081 ISO, which by FanGraphs definition is "awful". There's nothing harsh about calling Turang a light hitter.

Grisham is an example of a guy who developed power in the system. He seems like a pretty good comp for Mitchell in a couple of ways.

Turang has been really young for each level. Power numbers are yet to be determined for him.

The thing with Mitchell is that people have seen the power in BP, so is not like it isnt there at all. He says he was asked to be more of a contact guy. It will be interesting to see if the Brewers can get it to play in games because all the other tools are there

If he stays in CF, and it looks like he will, he won't have to hit for a lot of power to have value. Diabetes is a bad thing, reminded of Dylan Covey.

The difference between the two is the Brewers discovered Covey’s diabetes as part of his physical after the draft and it was a shock to Covey and something he needed to learn to manage for the first time. Mitchell has managed his diabetes since he was 9 years old and seemingly has full control of caring for himself.

Agreed. I have about a dozen diabetic students each year. Nearly all are pretty good about learning to manage their diabetes. However, I've had a few that weren't able to recognize their own highs and lows, leading to major challenges at times. I'm not worried about his diabetes. Sounds like he knows how to manage it, and he'll have his trainers and team dietitians on speed dial at all times.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 13 years old, and while I was nowhere near the athlete Mitchell is, my diabetes didn't stop me from playing three sports in high school and playing Division III college football. And that was 20+ years ago. The medical technology has come a long way, to the point there they can determine the optimum blood sugar a diabetic athlete needs to register before and throughout competition. I personally have an electronic device that allows me to monitor blood sugar almost constantly, and all I do is middle-aged dad sports (youth baseball and football coaching, playing with the kids in the yard, and jogging). It sounds like Mitchell has his diabetes 100% under control, and I have absolutely no qualms about it stopping him from being able to fulfill his potential.

Being a Type 1 myself, Mitchell may already have his biggest fan in the Brewers' fanbase :) Plus my oldest son's name is Garrett (he's 11, and also a speedy outfielder), and he was pretty stoked as we watched the pick last night.

Any hopes for the second round pick?

I'm kind of pulling for the Crew to draft one that got away: Gage Workman, switch-hitting SS/3B. Insurance for Turang not getting any power, or a good replacement for Erceg in the prospect pipeline...

I wonder if the brewers will have to go overslot for Mitchel which could affect how they handle today. Brewers just need to go bpa. they have the worst rank system in baseball, they just need prospects.

Turang is listed at 6', 173 lbs compared to 6' 3", 204 lbs for Mitchell. Garrett has a much better frame & more raw power, so I'm not sure Brice is the best comp.

Damn, I can't stop thinking our future... Yelich in LF, Mitchell in CF, Lutz in RF, Huira at 3B, Urias at SS, Turang at 2B... Woodruff and Small leading our rotation.

Damn, future is bright!

If Mitchell is pegged to be a leadoff guy, do we really need him to develop a ton of power? I mean Cain is an all-star and hits 10 home runs a year. I'm not worried about this kid's power at all.

I was thinking more along the lines of a #2 hitter...

ss: Turang

cf: Mitchell

lf: Yelich

2b: Hiura

It's a ground ball, gap swing and we haven't shown we can make the necessary adjustments on those types of hitter to add power (prime example: Brice Turang - who is still far too much of a light hitter for my liking).

Turang is listed at 6', 173 lbs compared to 6' 3", 204 lbs for Mitchell. Garrett has a much better frame & more raw power, so I'm not sure Brice is the best comp.

And Yelich is listed at 6'3", 195. The size and frame of the player really doesn't have a ton to do with how much power they can generate with their bat, at least not anymore. The biggest difference between Yelich and Mitchell is that Yelich definitely showed more raw power in high school, while Mitchell brings more speed and defensive talent to the table. Other than that, their upbringing, frame and demeanor are very similar. I have the feeling the Brewers will tinker with Mitchell's swing in an attempt to capitalize on more of that raw power he apparently shows in BP, but I doubt they ever try to turn him into a "power hitter".

If Mitchell is pegged to be a leadoff guy, do we really need him to develop a ton of power? I mean Cain is an all-star and hits 10 home runs a year. I'm not worried about this kid's power at all.

Yeah, he doesn't need to develop power to be a solid contributor, it's just a bonus that he seems like the kind of guy who might be a candidate to do so.

Lorenzo's 2014 (502 PA, 109 OPS+, +18 field, 4.4 WAR) & 2016 (434 PA, 100 OPS+, +11 field, 3.0 WAR) seasons provide pretty good rough templates of what Garrett could become even without tapping into his power.

Grisham is an example of a guy who developed power in the system. He seems like a pretty good comp for Mitchell in a couple of ways.

Turang has been really young for each level. Power numbers are yet to be determined for him.

Welcome to the board!
