2020 NFL Draft Round 1 Discussion

homer

Y’all want splashes every year. Now you get a splash and everybody whines. Gute laying it on the line with this pick, appreciate it. Ted would have drafted a DL that was supposed to go in the 4th round.

In theory we are set at QB for another 15-20 years. Be happy this organization has the foresight to look ahead and not afraid to piss the starter off (Favre and Rodgers).

The Patriots were sniffing...better us than them.

Well, let the bathroom related storm begin! The big question will be " Aaron, how does it feel to be in the same position as Brett Farve was when you were drafted?" Needless drama!! Queen was there!!!

This is sort of an odd perspective considering that Ted literally did this exact same thing.

Odd take, considering Ted did literally the same thing as Gute did tonight in 2006. Minus the trade up, I guess.

Qb is the most important position …….. We now have two, two really good QB.

Jordan Love has a long, long ways to go to be considered a competent starting NFL quarterback, much less a really good one.

You can't make this a positive move. Its brutal and Gute should be fired before the end of the year. Trubisky made more sense than this for the cost.

QB not a Need. 1st round pick? Did the guy fall down where this is value? Nope. You stuck with your 1st pick and made this controversial pick? Nope. We traded up for a Backup QB to your highest paid player on your team. How's your 2020 team looking after the 1st round? Worse much much worse.

Think this says more about how bad they've been in round one but important perspective:

Andy Herman

@AndyHermanNFL

The Packers could have taken the best quarterback on the board with their first pick in every draft since 2011, save for 2016, and the roster would barely be different, except they’d also have Lamar Jackson.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Good thing the draft doesn’t end tonight.

And for the record, the Bears gave up two thirds and a fourth to move up one spot for Trubisky, so that’s apples and oranges.

People always react too strongly to the draft. Guy could suck, could be really good, could fill a bigger hole in rounds 2-5. Who knows. I just stopped reacting to the picks several years ago. I don't know anything about any of these people. The NFL is just not a hole-plugging sport like baseball. Teams that are "primed to dominate" end up 6-10 and disappear. Schemes change all the time. I've lost count of the number of teams that were "positioned to dominate" and then couldn't get back to the playoffs for 5 years.

Stranger things have happened than teams like the Packers winning a title, but to say they were one game from that is a bit generous. When they lined up with SF they were one 40-pt game from the SB.

Wow you are one of the 32 GMs and you know where Love was good value? It’s called the Patriots were looking to trade up. You are not allowed to cheer for Jordan Love going forward.

Honestly, I hope this is a signal of a shift back to the BPA draft philosophy that Ted used earlier in his time in GB that drove the fans crazy but built the team that won XLV, probably should have won XLVI and made the playoffs for 8 straight years. Build depth, draft value, and don't reach to fill holes. It was the shift away from that and to trying to plug defensive holes later in his career where the drafting when to crap.

I can't see how this is really surprising to anyone that pays close attention to the team. Gute has said over and over that they always scout everyone they think they might draft. If they had a board and the big targets they wanted were gone and this guy was #5 and their BPA then it takes a lot of discipline to make the pick. It's just not a big deal to me. He might be traded, he might be out of football by 2023, he might be our next starter.

At a minimum this team badly needed a backup QB. Rodgers is old and no iron man. I'm fine with it.

From McGinn's draft preview:

4. JORDAN LOVE, Utah State (6-3 ½, 224, 4.71, 1-2): Love is a fourth-year junior from Bakersfield, Calif. “He has the most physical upside of any of these guys,” said one scout. “The great ones make things look easy. He makes it look easy. He’s an effortless thrower. He played with nobody around him. This year he was just out there winging it trying to make plays to win games. Did he develop some bad habits? Yeah, of course he did. But you can rein that in. It’s (easier) to get guys that like to play it safe and check down and be chain-movers. It’s hard to get those guys that push the ball down the field. He’s the only quarterback I ever scouted who will throw into bigger windows as a pro than he did in college. Those guys did not get open for him. If he ends up outside the top 10 we could be saying, ‘How the heck did Jordan Love last that long?’ He’s just got that play-making ability.”

Look on the bright side, if Rodgers breaks his collar bone again, we’ll go from ‘we’re totally screwed’ to ‘let’s wait and see what happens.’

If it's in 2020, we're probably still pretty screwed. Love probably isn't ready til at least 2021 and preferably 2022. He needs some time.
