Simulated 2020 Baseball Season (JosephC)

May 5 - Brewers 6, Marlins 2

Roster move before the game-

J.P. Feyereisen recalled from AAA, Eric Yardley optioned to AAA

Corbin Burnes had started a bullpen game earlier in the year, this was his first real start of the season. He gave up a 2-run home run to Lewis Brinson in the 2nd, but pitched pretty well outside of that. Braun finally does something with a home run and triple in this ballgame. His first RBI since April 6, and his first extra base hit since April 11. Hiura with the biggest day of all, 4 hits including a 3-run home run. Hiura had been in a bit of a RBI drought himself (his first RBIs since April 25), but the home run put him back in the team lead for RBIs with 23.

The Brewers (21-15) still hold a 1 game lead over the Cardinals (20-16). The Cubs and the Reds are both 5 1/2 games back with identical 15-20 records. The Pirates (13-21) are 7 games back.

Also a note that the MLB Draft is one month away and OOTP has real players for the draft. The mock in OOTP is projecting 3B/RHP Tanner Witt as the Brewer's round 1 pick.

Other league news, Evan Longoria hits career home run #300.

May 6 - Marlins 4, Brewers 3

3-3 tie heading into the bottom of the 9th, and here's what happened-

Ray Black enters the game

Jorge Alfaro strikes out looking

Lewis Brinson doubles

Jon Berti grounds out to shortstop (Brinson cannot advance)

Jonathan Villar is hit by pitch

Chris Lee enters the game to create a lefty/lefty matchup

Matt Joyce reaches base on a dribbler between first and second base

Chris Lee injures his foot on the play and has to be removed from the ballgame

Bases now loaded with two outs

Drew Rasmussen replaces the injured Chris Lee

Francisco Cervelli is the pinch hitter

Rasmussen hits Cervelli with the first pitch, forcing in the winning run

It was a bizarre lineup today to say the least with Cain, Hiura and Yelich all on the bench, but this is the 9th day in a streak of 20 straight days with a game. All the Brewer runs came in the first inning on a solo home run by Morrison followed by a 2-run home run by Sogard two batters later. After that Yamamoto settled down and it was a big nothing for Milwaukee. Lindblom pitched pretty well, allowed three runs but an error by Sogard made all three of those runs unearned.

As mentioned above, Chris Lee was injured which could be a significant blow as Hader, Black and Lee have been excellent and the rest of the bullpen has been shaky at best. David Phelps can come off the disabled list tomorrow and is ready to go, so he's probably the replacement if Lee has to miss some time.

May 7 - Marlins 2, Brewers 1

Roster move made-

David Phelps activated from the disabled list, Drew Rasmussen optioned to AAA

Another disappointing loss for Milwaukee. Houser's best start of the year, but the Brewer bats have gone cold. 4 games against the worst team in baseball, and the Brewers only score 11 runs in those games. This is the third straight series loss for the Brewers.

Chris Lee's injury is a sprained ankle, listed as a 3-day day-to-day injury and likely won't prevent him from getting into a game if needed.

The Smoak injury is looking more and more like a big deal, the Brewers are 4-7 since he went down.

In other league news, Texas relief pitcher Cody Allen has a bone spur in his elbow and will miss 4-5 months. Allen has a 7.94 ERA and 2.12 WHIP so whoever replaces him will probably be an upgrade.

Since we are 10 days into a 20 day stretch with no off-days, I'll follow this post with a standings update and the current Brewer stats.

May 8 - Brewers 6, Diamondbacks 4

Roster move made-

Drew Rasmussen recalled from AAA, J.P. Feyereisen optioned to AAA

Stearns in full blown "fresh arm" mode now. That's four bullpen moves in the last six days.

Nice, "relaxing" victory for the Brewers today. Grabbed an early 4 run lead, and while the Diamondbacks were able to cut that lead to 2 runs on a couple of occasions, it felt like the Brewers were firmly in control of this one throughout the ballgame. The Diamondbacks have now lost 8 of their last 10. Robbie Ray has struggled this year and didn't make it to the third inning (now has a 5.62 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 5.07 FIP). Freddy Peralta allowed quite a few baserunners in this game, but still pitched pretty well and IMO probably should have gone out for the sixth inning as he had only thrown 83 pitches. Drew Rasmussen with another rough outing out of the bullpen. Another big performance today by Eric Sogard may have upgraded his overall performance this season to "outstanding." He now leads the team in doubles (11) and is up to third in RBIs (19). With Smoak on the DL, he's been the Brewers second-best hitter, only behind Yelich.

In other league news, Indian's pitcher Shane Bieber suffers a torn UCL and is out of the season. Bieber had a horrible start (11 earned runs in his first 6 innings)....but had been rock-solid after that (10 earned runs in his last 35 innings). Clevinger is also injured and will miss at least the next couple of weeks. Carlos Carrasco is having an excellent bounce-back season (3.12 ERA). It's worth noting that Cleveland has brought up "transaction proposal" favorite Triston McKenzie. McKenzie has been designated as a follower, so he won't be starting, but he'll be throwing extended innings once every fifth game.

Rays pitcher Blake Snell has a forearm strain but he's only expected to be out for approximately 6 days.

May 9 - Brewers 6, Diamondbacks 4

Logan Morrison hits a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the ballgame. The most dramatic win for the Brewers so far this year. All of Milwaukee's runs came by home runs (two-run home run by Urias in the fourth and a solo shot by Braun in the sixth). A shaky start by Woodruff followed by an excellent bullpen effort from Black/Williams/Claudio.

The Cardinals have lost their last three, so the Brewers have opened up a 2 1/2 game lead. Cubs are riding a six-game losing streak, now at 15-23 they are only 1/2 game ahead of the Pirates for last place.

May 10 - Diamondbacks 3, Brewers 1

Not really much to say about this one. Mike Leake pretty much baffled everyone in the Brewer's lineup not named Ben Gamel (3 singles). The Brewers only run scored on a single by Drew Rasmussen. Corbin Burnes struggled in this game despite only allowing 2 runs. David Phelps allowed a solo home run to Kole Calhoun, but other than that it was another pretty solid bullpen effort.

We are now 1/4 of the way through the season and here are some observations:

-The Brewers are sixth in the NL in runs scored but I think there is upside there for them to be even better. I can't remember any hitter really going into one of those 7-10 day stretches where they just mash everything. Yelich has the best slash line at .298/.391/.536/.927 but even that has been more of a steady, consistent performance throughout.

-I also wonder if the engine will put in some more platoon situations as the year progresses, which I've seen it do in the past. Luis Urias has definitely gotten better with the bat as the year has progressed (.190/.330/.345/.675 in April, .265/.342/.412/.754 in May), but he continues to really struggled against righties just like he did in MLB play last year (.182/.287/.293/.580 against righties, .368/.538/.737/1.275 against lefties).

-Avisail Garcia is still listed in the primary lineup but hasn't started the last two games and I fully expect the engine to take more playing time away from him. So far he has a miserable .193/.231/.319/.550 slash line, and what's more annoying is that the engine routinely has him hitting ahead of Yelich/Hiura with that awful .231 OBP.

-Lorenzo Cain makes way more run-saving, diving catches in centerfield than the opposition (and it's obvious when watching) and just the defensive aspect has been a big difference-maker. He's also has been very good with the bat (.281/.343/.450/.793). Yelich and Sogard have been better with the bat, but Cain is the WAR leader (1.6).

-The engine has Omar Narvaez's defense as being much better than his reputation. He has thrown out 9 of 17 runners attempting to steal and only has allowed 2 passed balls. His catcher's ERA is the highest on the team though (Pina = 3.83, Freitas = 4.00, Narvaez = 4.31). His bat hasn't been anything special but I would guess still would rate as slightly above average for the catcher position (.263/.324/.404/.728).

-The pitching is both 8th in the NL in starter's ERA and bullpen ERA and I still can't make heads or tails out of it. Best guess is that the ERA makes them look better than they really are as there consistently seems to be runners all over the bases. There is no team WHIP ranking that I can locate, but they are 11th in hits allowed and 12th in walks allowed. I still get the feeling that this is where they will need to do an upgrade or two by trade, but will admit that there is a likely bias built in there because this is the area of the team I worry about in reality.

-Corey Knebel's rankings are pretty high in this game so I'd suspect he will be very effective once we get into the second half of the season. Ray Black and Chris Lee won't continue the insane pace that each of them has been on, but even with a drop-off a combination of Hader/Knebel/Black/Lee could make 1/2 of a very solid bullpen. Still hard to tell with Rasmussen. Overall he's looked pretty good, but those two clunkers against the Marlins gives the impression that it might be huge ups and downs with him.

-Adrian Houser has looked better lately. But it's hard to get over the fact that he has a 7.36 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 5.93 FIP. Just have to wonder how many more starts the engine will give him with numbers like that?

I've also attached a screenshot of the currently NL Central standings. The bottom is as enjoyable as the top.

May 12 - Cubs 5, Brewers 4 (Game 1)

Brewers lose this one in the bottom of the ninth when Victor Caratini (currently with a .173/.297/.280/.577 line) hits an 0-2 pitch for a home run off of Alex Claudio. Josh Lindblom had a solid start. Devin Williams had a terrible outing and was bailed out by Ray Black. Corey Knebel turns in a 3 batter, 3 strikeout performance and appears to be hitting his stride.

Eric Sogard with another three hit game and Omar Narvaez hits a 2-run home run.

Two injuries in this game. Logan Morrison left the game after running out a double, and Anthony Rizzo left the game after being hit by a Josh Lindblom pitch. No word on the extent of Morrison's injury, but it looks like he is at least out for game 2. Rizzo has been diagnosed with a bruised thigh and is already being listed as day-to-day for the next 6 days.

May 12 - Brewers 7, Cubs 6 (Game Two)

Kyle Hendricks started for the Cubs and definitely ran into some bad luck. He ended up leaving the game after the second inning due to an undisclosed injury. Hendricks gave up four first inning runs, only two of them were earned but bad defense was really responsible for all four runs. It looked like Kris Bryant should have fielded a ball that ended up going down the third base line for a Keston Hiura double, then Bryant committed an error on a Luis Urias grounder.

More bad defense cost the Cubs a run in the fifth inning when Avisail Garcia scored on a Urias single, he was going to be out by a mile at the plate but Kyle Schwarber air mailed the throw. Garcia was only in a position to score on that play because a Brad Wieck wild pitch put him at second base. The Cubs clearly were shooting themselves in the foot throughout this game.

The Brewers ended up winning the game on a 2-run single by Ryan Braun in the seventh inning which put them ahead for good. Garcia with a 2-hit game, his first multi-hit game since April 24, and Eric Sogard with another 2-hit game.

The only way to sugar-coat Adrian Houser's performance is to say the Brewers scored seven runs and won the game. Houser was awful and IMO should be sent to the bullpen. The bullpen was outstanding. 7 1/3 innings pitched, 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk, 11 strikeouts.

May 13 - Brewers 8, Cubs 3

Roster move before the game-

J.P. Feyereisen recalled from the minors, Drew Rasmussen optioned to AAA

Brewers win a laugher today, as the stumbling & bumbling Cubs cannot get out of their own way. Kris Bryant thrown out on the bases twice (once by Cain, once by Yelich) to kill potential rallies, and starting pitcher Jharel Cotton with a big error leading to a grand slam by Lorenzo Cain. The Cubs have now lost 9 of their last 10, are in last place in the NL Central and have the 5th worst winning percentage in MLB. The Brewers move to 25-19 and are 2 1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals.

Home runs by Cain, Urias and Hiura were the big blows. But the most notable accomplishment may be that Garcia had a 3-hit game which was badly needed. The Brewers offense could be a real juggernaut if his bat gets going.

Peralta with a solid outing, the 6 1/3 innings is his second longest start of the year (7 innings on April 16 against the Phillies). About the only negative in this game was Corey Knebel gave up a home run to Albert Amora. The game was obviously well in hand, but it would be nice to see Knebel return to dominating fashion as the Brewers could use another reliable bullpen arm. Knebel currently has a 5.19 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 5.23 FIP.

The Brewers got a bit of a scare as Eric Sogard had to leave the ballgame when going from first to third on a single. Fortunately, the injury is already being described as knee tendinitis and he's listed as day-to-day for 2 days, so he might not miss any time at all.

May 14 - Reds 11, Brewers 4

Nothing but bad news for Brewer fans today.

Logan Morrison has a torn groin and is expected to miss the next 6 weeks. Ryan Braun moves into the starting lineup at first base. Keon Broxton is put on the 26-man roster and the 40-man roster. The 40-man roster now up to 36 players.

The Brewers were in a four run hole after the fifth inning, were able to claw back within one run, but a complete bullpen collapse in the eighth innning by Devin Williams, J.P. Feyereisen and Chris Lee ended the ballgame. Williams allowed a single, a walk and got one out. Feyereisen walked two batters, hit a batter and got a strikeout (one run scored on a walk, another run scored on the hit batsman). Lee came in and gave up a grand slam home run to Nick Castellanos. Castellanos did about a weeks worth of production in this one game. 4 hits, 3 home runs, 7 RBIs. He is looking like a great signing for the Reds as his OPS is up to 1.011.

A rough outing for Brandon Woodruff pushes his ERA to 4.02. The rotation has emerged as the weakest part of the team. The Brewers now have a starters ERA of 4.80, which ranks 11th in the NL.

Multi-hit games for Cain, Yelich and Holt. Omar Narvaez hit a 2-run home run in the eighth which looked big at the time as it pulled the Brewers to within one run.

And looking at other league news, we have a pretty significant trade-

Yankees get RHP-Chris Archer

Pirates get CF-Kevin Alcantara and LHP-Dalton Lehnen

Archer's 2020 stats: 46 1/3 innings, 4.47 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 4.27 FIP, 3.9 BB/9, 8.5 K/9.

Alcantara is a high upside 17 year old assigned to rookie ball so he doesn't have any 2020 stats.

Lehnen was pitching in A+ ball where he had thrown 16 1/3 innings in relief and had a 2.20 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 3.69 FIP, 2.8 BB/9, 7/2 K/9.

Can't talk about this trade without taking a look at how the players the Pirates traded to get Archer are doing in the simulation-

Austin Meadows = 203 plate appearances, .294/.360/.600/.960, 12 HR, 40 RBI, 8 SB, 2.0 WAR

Tyler Glasnow = 9 starts, 49 2/3 innings, 2.90 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 4.53 FIP, 4.5 BB/9, 10.5 K/9

Shane Baz = at A+ = 7 starts, 34 1/3 innings, 4.98 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 4.84 FIP, 5.5 BB/9, 7.1 K/9 (currently rated as the #117 prospect in baseball)

May 15 - Reds 8, Brewers 6

Roster move before the game-

Drew Rasmussen recalled from AAA, J.P. Feyereisen optioned to Biloxi (AA)

Brewer pitching hammered in today's game. Box score says it all. 14 hits and 6 walks for the Reds...20 baserunners in 8 innings. A seemingly endless stream of baserunners for Cincinnati and the Brewers seemed fortunate to only allow 8 runs. A quick glance at the box score shows Burnes allowed 2 unearned runs, but Burnes committed the error that led to those two runs (little tapper back to him that he couldn't field). The Reds offense was even able to get to Ray Black (allowed 2 runs), which has been a rare occurrence.

Yelich's home run was a 457 foot blast.

The Brewers now hold a two-game lead in the division as the Cardinals also lose. St. Louis are only 3-7 in their last 10 games.

In other league news, the injury that Kyle Hendricks suffered in the recent game against Milwaukee turned out to be a torn labrum and he is out for the year. Tremendous blow to the Cubs who already sit in last place in what, so far, has been the worst division in baseball.

May 16 - Reds 9, Brewers 3

Due to the rainout on Monday and double-header on Tuesday, the Brewers didn't have any starter with 4-days rest. Houser was listed as the starter going in, and even though he would have been pitching on 3-days rest, he had only thrown 49 pitches in his last appearance. So I really thought Houser would start this ballgame. Instead, this turned into a bullpen game for Milwaukee and it led to another thrashing by the Reds.

Rasmussen got the start, gave up a home run to Nick Senzel on the very first pitch, walked the next three batters, got Joey Votto to fly out on a weak ball to center....then David "master of allowing the inherited runner to score" Phelps came in the game and gave up a grand slam home run on the very first pitch to Nick Castellanos. Pretty much game over from that point forward.

Sonny Gray gave up 10 hits in 7 innings but was masterful as it was seemingly weak ground ball after weak ground ball. Cain and Hiura for sure had weakly hit, infield singles and there may have been one or two more mixed in there.

Cardinals lost again, dropping them to a game under .500, so the Brewers maintain their 2 game lead in the division. With these three wins the Reds are up to 21-25 and despite the mediocre record are only 3 1/2 games behind the Brewers.

In other league news, Dodger shortstop Corey Seager was involved in a collision on the bases and is expected to miss three weeks with a separated shoulder.

May 19 - Yankees 6, Brewers 1

Gerrit Cole started for the Yankees and limited the Brewers to 1 run over 7 innings (a home run by Eric Sogard). The Brewers did have their chances though. In the sixth inning, down 3-1, Ben Gamel and Lorenzo Cain led off the inning with singles, followed by a Avisail Garcia fly out (Keon Broxton, pinch-running for Gamel, advanced to third), then a Keston Hiura strikeout, then a medium length fly out to center by Christian Yelich. In the seventh inning, still down 3-1, Ryan Braun led off the inning with a single, Omar Narnaez walked, followed by a Luis Urias fly out, an Eric Sogard strikeout and a Brock Holt strikeout. So back to back innings with 2 on, 0 out and the Brewers could not score a run.

Corey Knebel pitched in the 8th and gave up 3 runs without recording an out. Brett Gardner walk, Gleyber Torres single, 3-run home run by Giancarlo Stanton. Knebel's ERA up to 6.55. Aaron Judge hit a 2-run home run off of Freddy Peralta in the 2nd.

Hmm. Bullpen MVPs reading page 5 to here are Feyereisen and Rasmussen. It's comical. Rasmussen having parts to all 3 losses vs Marlins gets optioned for Feyereisen who promptly throws a bad outing. I think is how it went. Rasmussen pitching the following game. Poor outing recall JPF. The simulation is awful. I'll probably check in again around 1/2 way through the season just to further see how awful it is.

On BRef's version Hiura has a worse BA than 3 Brewer pitchers.

Credit and appreciation that you've put this work together. Far too cringy for me to take any of as a realm of a possible season.

May 20 - Brewers 12, Yankees 3

The game was tied 3-3 after 5 innings and looked like it was a potential nail-biter. But the Brewer bats hammered the Yankee's bullpen, 7 earned runs in 3 innings, to turn this one into a laugher. This is the worst loss the Yankees have suffered all year, prior to this the worst loss they had was a game against the Rangers on April 14 where they lost 10-4.

Christian Yelich with a two home run game, his first multi-home run game so far this season. Brock Holt replaces an injured Luis Urias and hits a two-run home run in the sixth. Ryan Braun puts the final three runs on the board with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Also a nice game for Avisail Garcia with a double, single and a walk.

Lorenzo Cain again starred on defense. In the first inning he threw out Brett Gardner when he tried to go from first to third on a Gleyber Torres single. In the eighth inning, with the bases loaded, Miguel Andujar hit a hard sinking liner that looked like it would fall in, but Cain made a diving catch and then threw out Gio Urshela who wandered way too far off of first base.

Brewer pitching allowed quite a few baserunners in this game, but the Yankees could only manage three runs and all were courtesy of Gleyber Torres. Torres hit a two-run home run in the third and a solo shot in the fifth. The home run in the fifth was a 463 blast to straight-away center field.

Luis Urias and Brett Gardner both left this game due to injury. Urias has already been listed with a strained triceps with a day-to-day status for two weeks. The extent of Gardner's injury is still unknown.

May 21 - Yankees 6, Brewers 3

Roster move before the game-

Drew Rasmussen recalled from AAA, J.P. Feyereisen optioned to AAA

Frankly a boring game for Brewer fans. New York takes an early 2 run lead, builds it to a 5-1 by the middle of the fourth and cruised to victory.

Chris Archer makes his Yankees debut and is solid over 6 1/3 innings. Adrian Houser is terrible once again. I was hoping Houser would have been skipped as Burnes hasn't pitched since the 15th (5 days rest) and Lindblom hasn't pitched since the 12th (8 days rest). I haven't heard many boo-birds so far but they were out in full force after Houser gave up back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning. Houser is up to an 8.61 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 6.62 FIP and opponents have a .345/.405/.655/1.059 line against him. He needs to be sent to the bullpen immediately.

Ryan Braun hit a solo home run in the fourth. That was easily the #1 highlight for Brewer fans.

Cardinals win and are now 1 1/2 behind the Brewers. There should be some wins in the near future as their next two series are home series against the Cubs (17-31) and the Giants (19-29).

In other league news, Mariners catcher Tom Murphy broke his ankle and will miss four months.

May 22 - Cubs 6, Brewers 4 (10 innings)

Terrible loss for Milwaukee. The Brewers held a close 4-2 lead late, which has become somewhat of a rare occurrence, and had it setup for a Knebel 8th and Hader 9th. Knebel started the 8th and walked Rizzo, got Baez on a fielder's choice ground ball, walked Schwarber…and Counsell pulled him after the second walk which looked to be the right move given his recent struggles. Chris Lee came in and worked out of the jam, surrendering a walk to Caratini but then striking out Contreras and getting Almora on a weak fly ball. Hader then starts the 9th still with the 2 run lead. Descalso strikes out looking. Heyward strikes out, but a Narvaez passed ball allows him to reach first base. Happ flies out to right field on a very hard hit liner. Rizzo comes up...a lefty/lefty matchup one would figure would favor Hader...Rizzo has struggled this year with only 3 HRs and entered the game with a poor .636 OPS...and smashes a 3-2 pitch for a 405 foot home run to right-centerfield. Two unearned runs score as a result of a passed ball, leading to extra innings and a Brewer's loss.

The big blow in the 10th inning was a Descalso double that knocked in Caratini and Almora.

Burnes was the starter and looked alright, but was pulled early as the pitch count got a bit out of hand early (he threw 49 pitches in the first two innings). One of the runs he allowed scored on a balk...just another example of how the Brewers just flushed this game away.

Yelich and Braun with back-to-back home runs in the 4th. Urias knocked in Yelich on a single in the sixth, and Gamel scored on a sac fly by Garcia in the 7th. Things were looking good for Milwaukee at that point. But overall a frustrating game for Brewer hitters as there were many blown chances...11 hits, 5 walks, errors by Bryant and Rizzo that allowed two more baserunners...and the Brewers could only manage 4 runs even with all that action on the bases.

However, the biggest news from this game is that Corbin Burnes hit Kris Bryant in the foot with a pitch in the fifth inning that resulted in a fracture. Bryant is expected to miss 3 weeks of action.

The Cardinals lost again so the Brewers maintain a 1 1/2 game lead. The Pirates are now on a 7-3 stretch which has elevated their record to a really mediocre 22-26, but that's still good enough for 3rd place in the division, only 2 1/2 games behind the Brewers.
