Tickets to 2020 Games

rickh150
I recently emailed my ticket rep and asked how unplayed 2020 game tickets would be handled. He responded that an announcement would be coming soon from the Brewers. He mentioned that unplayed games would be exchanged for future games in 2020 or 2021. The 2021 part was nice to hear. Also, there was no mention of refunds. We'll see how true this is. I haven't heard anything official on this yet? Any one else?

No refunds...that is a likely outcome. My understanding that one of the theories was to hand out a “credit” to alleviate the problem of people losing valuable game tickets. Being forced to exchange Opening Day for a weekday Reds game would cause an utter uproar. It would be almost impossible to even fairly let people exchange as the remaining good games would be almost sold out and especially in good sections. Thus people would get a credit worth what they paid for the ticket originally. That being said I have zero idea how that would work for season ticket holders since they don’t pay more for specific games. I do know more than one team has floated that idea.

It will be a mess, a glorious mess.

Anyone wondering if they are not giving refunds will they (the team) possibly credit your account to be used at different ballparks? I was taking my dad (who lives in WI) for the weekend series in Boston. I live in Phoenix and really have no plans to go to Boston or see a Red Sox game in the near future. Any information is welcome. I'm really fearful I will be out a lot of money, but stuff happens. I know I'm asking about Boston practices but I'm guessing most will all follow the same suit.

Yah, I wouldn’t expect that. Best you can help for is a credit that you can buy other tickets with...then sell. Maybe they just flat out refund, which would be much better.

Teams are free to do what they want and I would expect that not all teams will follow the same rules.

What I anticipate is the team offering a bunch of options and most of them geared towards them keeping your money. Swapping out games, and incentivizing doing that, probably tossing in extra games if you elect to do swaps. I am guessing they will have to offer refunds as an option too given how drastic the changes are going to be. They won't want the bulk of people to do that though, and will come up with ways to make you stick it out.

Teams are going to wait until what games if any will be played. They will then announce what they will do with the non played games. Your circumstances are different than most, and probably be taken care of with a talk on the phone. You should probably wait until there is an announcement either way on the status of games.

Waiting til a schedule is set makes sense, yet I'm sure the team is getting thousands of notes of inquiry on game tickets, especially this past week...... including the Chicago loudmouths and scalping piranhas. The team wants a definitive answer for the fan I'd expect sooner than later.

Ugh, getting pretty annoyed that they kept my money, removed my tickets from mlb.com and announced nothing
I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

They have no clue what to do.....but refunds I can't see happening.

Well at least my credit card company is pretty good about it when I make a purchase and then never receive what I paid for

There would be too much public outrage if teams refused to offer refunds for unplayed games.

Concerts, live theater, etc. all offer refunds. There's nothing unique to a sports team that should offer them any special consideration.

Is it so hard for a multi-billion dollar industry like MLB to refund fans in full, hold the previously purchased seats for those fans, and when this is all sorted out then give the fans a 96 hour window to buy back the seats that they had previously purchased? That seems the way that an honest, friendly business would treat their customers.

Markets look like they could be up a full 10% combined between Monday and Tuesday. Attanasio is probably really enjoying his best customer's money right now.

A) I think he would rather be playing games...he and others are really losing piles of money not playing.

B) I doubt he holds everyone’s money ransom in the stock market and even if he did I don’t know why he would be happy...he would still be at a huge net loss doing that.

Guys...you'll get your money back. It's not going to be fast though. They can't move Opening Day from March to July and expect all the same people to come. They will offer incentives for you to accept something else. But there is no way they are just going to take gobs of cash from their most loyal customers and tell them to deal with it. There's 0% chance that happens. You could be waiting months, but if you don't accept what they offer, you'll get your money back.

Getting cash refunds for bought tickets would surprise me..... Maybe not shock me, considering these unusual past four weeks. Yet, my guess is that if I spent $1000 on tickets in February, I'll get $1000 to spend on tickets in late 2020 or 2021.

They're not going to have a choice. If I spent $1,000 on tickets for 2020 and move to Arizona in 2021, they're refunding some money. Concerts get cancelled all the time and it's almost always an offer to get the new date or get a refund.

They will incentivize customers letting them keep the money. Probably food and bev vouchers, gift cards, rolling into 2021 for something else, and I'd guess a lot of SSH will do that because they're annual customers anyway. I'll take whatever they offer most likely. But for the people who just want their money back, they're going to have to oblige. They can't afford to sour relations with their best customers over 1/4 or 1/2 a season. Their financial team will know that one year's loss is not worth the anger and resentment they'll cause by doing what you are suggesting.

They're not going to call everyone on April 1 and issue refunds though. They're in the same waiting game all of us are to weigh their options.

Now that a lawsuit is floating around MLB has reversed their policy now allowing teams the ability to refund games that have been postponed due to coronavirus. We will see what teams opt to do, but multiple teams plan to release their plan tomorrow.

The Reds announced their policy--cash refund or roll over to 2021 with a 10% concession credit.

Seems like a fair offer.

Only for season seat holders...single game holders can credit it forward or request a refund.

The Cardinals are giving SSHs nothing. It is automatically credited to their account unless they request a refund.

If that's the case then I'm definitely taking the cash on my single-game ticket purchases.

Hot off the presses for games 3/28 through 4/30:

"In accordance with our ticket policy, Season Seat Holders will receive a credit equal to the purchased value of your tickets. Additionally, Season Seat Holders will receive a 10% bonus credit. (If your account was credited for tickets valued at $200, you will receive a total credit of $220.) All credits can be used towards 2020 single game ticket purchases and/or applied to your 2021 season renewal invoice. You will also receive an offer to purchase tickets to select games at the Season Renewal price. More information on this benefit will be provided to you."

Of special note: "For those currently in possession of an Opening Day ticket, originally scheduled for Thursday, March 26, please hold on to your ticket. Your Opening Day ticket will be honored for the first regular season home game played at Miller Park in 2020."
