Simulated 2020 Baseball Season (Various Links and EB’s MLB The Show Sim)

Eye Black
BRef is running their own OOTP simulation of the 2020 season & Freddy Peralta just "threw" the second no hitter in franchise history with 17 K & 3 BB.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/sim/boxes/MIL/MIL202004160.shtml

That is sort of oddly awesome and depressing at the same time.

17 K and 3 BB... must have been an absurdly high pitch count...

I finished my first OOTP season last night- The Crew ran away with the NL central, beat the Braves 3-0 in the NLDS, then lost to the Dodgers in 7 in the NLCS (sounds familiar....).

Houser, Suter, and Peralta had nice seasons in the rotation, with the former two better than the latter. Woodruff was very mediocre and hurt by an absurdly high BABIP. I essentially traded turang for Garrett Richards to stabilize the rotation, and after he got hurt following two (good) starts with the crew, he provided a solid 1-5 rotation that kept the very good offense in most games. Bullpen was fantastic, anchored by Burnes, Knebel, and Hader. Small-ish trades to acquire Will Smith and Hector Neris during the season, which made them crazy good. Hader was the reliever of the year, once again.

Offense was unstoppable early in the year, and tapered significantly as the season went on. Yelich won the NL MVP, Hiura and Narvaez were amonst the best hitters at their positions, and Garcia, Urias and Cain were great contributors. Smoak started the year hot, and finished with 30 HR, but like Sogard, fell off dramatically as the season went on. Sogard ended up on the bench for the end of the year, using an Arcia at SS/Urias at 3rd combo in the playoffs.

Pitching is pretty well set for the offseason. Trying to find a permanent solution for 3B, along with a better second catcher (the game hates Pina), and possibly a more consistent option for 1B vs. Smoak.

This post was no good without complete trade details!

Game #20 - Brewers at Mets - April 17, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Mets 5, Brewers 1

Not much positive to say about this one, the Brewers mustered just 4 hits and never really got much of a threat going. On the positive side Arcia is batting over .400 on the season thus far (batting average!, not OPS).

Game #22 - Brewers at Mets - April 19, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 8, Mets 5

Brewers salvage a game in New York and avoid the sweep heading into the off day. Yelich, Narváez, and Smoak all hit home runs. Houser lasted just 4.1 innings, giving up just 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 4 walks allowed. Hader notched his 8th save of the year.

Game #23 - Brewers at Pirates - April 21, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Pirates 4, Brewers 3

The last place Pirates came into the game on an 8-game losing streak, but a Brett Anderson start proved just what they needed to get their offense going early. The Brewers are now in 4th place in the NL Central at 12-11 overall.

Game #24 - Brewers at Pirates - April 22, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 10, Pirates 2

The good news is Keston Hiura hit two home runs and tallied five RBIs. The bad news is Freddy Peralta suffered an oblique injury and is out indefinitely.

Game #25 - Brewers at Pirates - April 23, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 6, Pirates 0

Eric Lauer tied the longest start for any Brewers starter this season. Brewers keep rolling and are now just 1 game back of the Cardinals and 2.5 games behind the Cubs.

Game #26 - Brewers at Rockies - April 24, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 7, Rockies 2

The Brewers followed up yesterday’s 14 hit performance with 13 hits today. For the second time this week Keston Hiura had a two home run game. This time he had a 2-run HR in the 1st inning and a solo shot in the 8th inning. Since their series opening loss in Pittsburgh the Brewers have rattled off three straight wins. At 15-11 overall the BRewers are now just 1.0 games back of both the Cubs and Cardinals for 1st place.

Game #28 - Brewers at Rockies - April 26, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 8, Rockies 3 (10 innings)

Brock Holt, Justin Smoak, and Luis Urias all had two hits apiece for the Brewers. Brett Anderson had arguably his best start of the year going 6.0 IP and allowing just one earned run while walking none and striking out six batters. The Brewers rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the 9th inning versus Scott Oberg, and then they broke things open in extra innings by putting up 5 runs in the 10th frame.

Game #29 - Nationals at Brewers - April 28, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 9, Nationals 3

The Nationals dropped to just 10-18 on the season and in last place in a division that the Marlins currently lead. The bottom of the Brewers order remains extremely hot as Piña, Arcia, and Urias are all hitting well over .300 on the season. In this one both Arcia and Yelich had home runs. Familiar face, Eric Thames went 1-for-5 with a single and three strikeouts while playing RF for the Nationals. Thames is hitting just .189 on the season. Freddy Peralta lasted 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 5.

The Marlins have a 5-25 record in the OOTP sim.

Yeah, the Marlins are horrendous in my OOTP as well. Their rebuild has worked well in my 2021 season, though, as they're leading the east at the deadline.

Game #30 - Nationals at Brewers - April 29, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Nationals 6, Brewers 4

The Brewers took a 3-2 lead in the 5th inning on a Keston Hiura 2 RBI double, but the Brewers gave up a pair of runs in both the 7th (Alex Claudio) and 8th (Corbin Burnes) innings. Claudio was only credited with allowing one earned run as the other came as a result of a Hiura error. Eric Lauer threw 5.1 IP and allowed two runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. Lauer recorded 3 strikeouts, and has a 2.96 ERA on the season.

Game #31 - Nationals at Brewers - April 30, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Nationals 6, Brewers 3

Easily Brandon Woodruff’s worst start of the season lasting just 1.2 IP and giving up 5 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk. His season ERA has now jumped to 4.35 after the disastrous outing. The lone bright spots for the Brewers were Orlando Arcia’s home run (Arcia is hitting .367 on the season) and scoreless innings from both Corey Knebel (1.62 ERA for the season) and Alex Claudio (2.74 ERA).

Game #32 - Cardinals at Brewers - May 1, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 3, Cardinals 2

The Brewers pulled to within 1.0 games of the Cubs in the NL Central race. Justin Smoak had a pair of doubles and drove in a pair. Adrian Houser (2.91 ERA) continued his stellar season with 5.0 IP, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five.

Game #33 - Cardinals at Brewers - May 2, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Cardinals 4, Brewers 2

Brett Anderson entered the 9th inning with a 2-0 lead. He even retired two batters in the 9th inning before the wheels fell completely off. After allowing a pair of base runners Anderson was pulled from the game. Insert Josh Hader who walked three and allowed a hit. When the dust settled the Brewers had given up 4 runs in the 9th inning.

Game #34 - Cardinals at Brewers - May 3, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 8, Cardinals 3

Brewers secure the series win and Ben Gamel tallies 6 RBIs. The only Brewers starting position player without a hit in this game was Christian Yelich. Yelich is now hitting just .252 on the season. The Cardinals did all of their damage against starter Freddy Peralta (4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO), but the Brewers bullpen was stellar including two hitless innings from Devin Williams.

Game #35 - Brewers at Marlins - May 4, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Marlins 8, Brewers 2

Rough start to the beginning of this four game series versus the Marlins. Eric Lauer didn’t get out of the 1st inning and the Brewers never put up much of a fight. The only offensive highlights were a Yelich triple and a Smoak double. Old friends in the lineup for the Marlins included Jonathan Villar (2-for-4, RBI, 2 runs scored) and Jesus Aguilar (1-for-3, RBI, 1 run).

Game #36 - Brewers at Marlins - May 5, 2020 (MLB The Show Sim)

Final Score: Brewers 9, Marlins 1

Four Brewers hit home runs (Hiura, Smoak, Urias, Holt) and Brandon Woodruff scattered six hits and allowed just one run over 6.0 IP. Corbin Burnes pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and has now brought his ERA under 4 on the season. That’s quite a feat considering how badly he started the season. Speaking of bad starts, Christian Yelich went 0-for-5 in this game and has a batting average that’s dipped to .242.
