A Florida man is claiming the "game changing" drug touted by Trump cured him overnight. I haven't seen much outside of that on that cure.

 

Florida Man is probably already immune to it.

 

No, he wasn't. He was quite sick and already said his good byes to family. The drug is Hydroxychloroquine, we've been talking about it a lot. Too early to tell, but doctors that have been using it have had really positive results. Small sample though, like if Sogard was hitting .500 after the first week of the season. Larger studies are being done in US and other countries, we'll know more relatively soon.

Link? That's different numbers than the ones I saw from a French study.

Nobody is under house arrest. The pool and dart store is still open. Best Buy is open. Lots of places that shouldn't be open are open.

The survival rates are based on known cases, obviously because you can't know who has it without a test. But certainly there are lots of folks who must have it, never went to a hospital and eventually recovered. Based on some best-estimates-from-smart-people numbers, the death rate from this would end up being a lot lower than the flu. Granted, it does seem the death rate from the elderly and already-sick is super high, as well as the rate that one corona person gives it to 2.5 people while the flu is 1.3.

I read about a 21 year old who was posting videos about how she isnt going to get it, yadda yadda yadda, she has it now. Now shes trying to tell people how painful it can be and basically said she didnt care and her and her friends would meet up and go about life as normal. Now shes regretting that. Shocker.

Not any more - they shut down the lakefront, river, and 606 trails (and all parks) yesterday afternoon.

 

Yet, when I went to pick up dinner at 5:30pm there were 15-20 people piling into a city bus at the corner of Division and Ashland with not a foot between them. Yeah, let's shut down the running trails but let people cram into a city bus. Which do we think is more likely to lead to more infections?

Yeah shutting down the lakefront was dumb. If someone runs or bikes past me and gets within six feet I still feel pretty good about my social distancing. Those photos are deceiving too - long lens compresses distance making it look like people are closer than they really are.

I'm aware of the shutdown thanks to Lightfoot sending me an alert on my phone yesterday. Just pointing out that there are still tons of people out and about. The parks near us on the southside are packed whenever the sun comes out. I'm also near Chinatown, so there are a lot of people who do not understand what social distancing is. They have tape on the floor at the grocery store to indicate how far apart to stand and about 90% of people get it, but there are still enough who will just stand right behind me and look confused when I ask them to back up.

Please be cautious and skeptical about that French study, or really any one study promising a miracle cure. There is criticism of the PIs methods, history of data manipulation, and questions about the speed and impartiality of the peer review. The two drugs in question have side effects and are needed by patients with other conditions; they should only be taken under a doctor's care after their efficacy is firmly established or if the situation is truly dire.

 

I would dearly love there to be a promising treatment, and it is of course still possible that this is it, but we haven't done the science yet to be sure. It's irresponsible for politicians or TV stations to suggest that people go out and buy the stuff for self-prescribed use.
