Cutting the cord

I was just going to re-sign up for Hulu and can watch most stuff the day after

If it's over-the-air, you could just get a Roku and download the network's streaming app. While you won't be able to skip the in-app commercials, you can watch just about anything from CBS, ABC, Fox & NBC the next day....for free.

This is what I've been doing since my TiVo gave up the ghost a few months ago....though I will actually be moving to Direct TV Stream in the near future. Losing NFL Network, but it has everything else I would want, including Brewers games. With the NFL Thursday games moving to Fox & Amazon tonight, and moving full-time to Amazon starting in 2022, NFL Network isn't as essential as it used to be.

I liked Direct tV stream, but with no more brewers games on there, it doesn't seem to be worth 90 bucks for me. i hope ballys does come out with an app next spring and I can get closer to cutting the cord completely.

I cut the cord a long time ago. I’m having my daughters birthday party on Saturday and I know some of the guests would want to watch the game. Anyone have any ideas on how to stream it? Does TBS offer a monthly service I could purchase?

I've used Directv Stream since it was DirecTV Now. I really love the service...the channels are the exact same as DirecTV (same numbers), packages the same or similar, but I can have it in more than one location (unlikes FCC rules for cable and satellite). So it allows someone to use their package in a vacation home. Additionally, I don't rent any cable/satellite boxes or have to pay for HD or a DVR. I really like the ease of use of the remote and the streaming box, and the MLB At Bat app has had my old Apple TV collecting dust for over a year.

Sling will also have a free trial. I normally turn it on for a month (Bucks playoffs, Brewers playoffs) and turn it back off. Restarting it costs $10 for the first month.

But I should try YouTube TV also... I haven't burnt that free trial.

My area is about to get TDS, anyone have experience with them?

No idea of the costs yet though.

I worked for them for 9 years. if we could swear on this forum, I'd give you a colorful rundown of the way the customers were treated.

but I'll just say this. in a word.

don't.

Thanks for your opinion... Good to know.

How are they with pricing compared to say Spectrum?

TDS internet is much faster. Is there customer service a pile of trash? Yeah, but then again if your other option is Spectrum can't say it is much better. TDS is typically cheaper, but I believe they do they same thing Spectrum does and makes it look better with a cheaper first year. A lot of people love TDS, but I have seen a lot of very upset people too. They do a really crummy job running the cable and often times will leave it half done for months or never come back to clean up their mess. If you get the service in the winter and your utilities are buried the cable will just chill on your lawn all winter. As you can imagine when spring comes they are ridiculously backed up and people end up have the cable on their lawn all spring/summer....hopefully getting buried before winter comes again. They really don't care about you at that point because you have service and are paying them. They are more worried about hooking up new customers so they can get more people paying them.

My town has yet to get it because they refused to pay for any of the infrastructure setup as TDS didn't want to run cable out to service the rural part of town.

MLB is considering their own streaming service for in-market games. This could be the thing that finally kills the antiquated RSN model, especially if the NBA and NHL partner with them.

This would be awesome. I haven't had cable or anything for 5-6 years. I miss watching the Brewers - but such is life. Important games I can go to a friend's or a bar or wherever. I live with it.

I'll say this.

if you're a residential customer and you have multiple cable/fiber issues, you will eventually get told "there's nothing we can do about it" and the reasoning will vary from " you're at the end of a trunk line" or "it's simply too expensive for us to replace that much cable for one customer".

I worked for Time Warner, and the service sucked. but they NEVER dumped on a customer and just flat out told them " yeah lol sorry, you're too far out we don't care since you're just a residential anyways"

At least they are being honest about it instead of just using some filler words to cover up what they are actually saying.

I'm just to the point with Spectrum that I don't feel like they value me as a customer.

I've been with them for 17 years. If I was a new customer, I could take the same services I am getting now, and cut my bill in half.

They do nothing for their loyal customers, and everything to get the new ones.

I'm not asking for the moon, I just want to pay reasonable prices. My bill is currently $238 per month.

I have high speed internet (basic), the basic cable tv package, no premium channels, no HBO, SHO, etc. Nothing extra.

I also still have a landline, but only because if I drop it, my bill actually goes up $10 per month. lol

I am going to call to see if they offer any other promotions they can help me out with, but when I have done so in the past couple of years, they just say "sorry, you are already getting the lowest possible price, and there are no promotions that will lower your bill."

I used to be able to threaten them with leaving if I can't lower my bill, then they would connect me with a higher up, who would then miraculously come up with a plan that fit my budget. That is no longer the case, now they basically say TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT, and I am almost to the tipping point.

If TDS can offer basically the same service for $50-$100 less per month, I will probably be inclined to give them a try.

Hell, at worst, if they don't work out, I can go back to Spectrum and get all their NEW customer pricing that they won't give a 16-17 year loyal customer.

It's frustrating to say the least.

I just don't want to go the streaming route, and have to have 4 or 5 services to get what I want/need. I'm not against paying a little bit more for the convenience, but $238 per month is just ridiculous.

I like to turn the tv on, watch what I want, and be done with it...

Also, I NEED to be able to watch the Brewers, end of story. I can't imagine not having the option to turn on 99% of their games during the season.

I was goin to say this. You will probably save a massive amount the first year for intro TDS rates. I think their entry level internet is like $30. Now I think that goes up after the first year, but even then it is still less than Spectrum.

Worst case you save a bunch of money for a year and then go back to Spectrum and save money for a year again. I thought Spectrum required you to be away from their service for two years...but I could be wrong.

When it comes to my area I will probably just test it out the first year to save a little money on internet and they are going to rip up in the right of way to go past my house anyway...might as well have them do it to my house at the same time.

I would for sure check into that...

Sounds about right, overcharge you, chase you away, then deprive themselves of you coming back, even if they lose money in the process.

Of course they don't care about you, but the solution is staring you in the face. Anyone who has more than one ISP/cable provider option, just change every year and always have new customer pricing. Bit of a pain, sure, but it's not that big of a deal. Worth it to always pay half the price.

TDS was the only option I had for my cabin. I won't try and recount the entire process, but yes in general the customer service experience was not good. The actual local service guys were OK and cared but things were set-up in a very weird multitiered way. So it ended up taking 3 different appointments to actually get the service set-up. Since then it has been good generally the speed has been as advertised too. They were advertising a 3 year price guarantee and with some legwork I avoided getting stuck with one of their modems.

You need to look into/learn the ins and outs of a VPN or something. $238 is insanity.

  • 1 month later...

Turbo,

Cut the TV portion of Spectrum and just go with their internet service. It will probably cost you $75/mo or so, but then add on YouTube TV for $65/mo. With YouTube TV you get the local channels so you will still be able to watch all the Packers games (assuming you live in WI), and then add on MLB.TV if you want to watch a lot of Brewers games. Your total bill will be ~$140 before taxes/fees, but even with the additional MLB.TV subscription it sounds like that will be at least $60/mo less than what you are paying now.

YTTV has a good selection of standard sports channels - ESPN/2/News/U, BTN, MLB, NFL, NBA, Golf Channel, FS1, FS2, CBS Sports Network, NBC Sports Network, ACC Network, SEC Network. MLB.TV might be the only thing you would need to add on if you don't currently have any movie channels.

They let you try it free for a month, and right now they are charging $15 for the second month, so you can give it a two-month trial to see whether it works for you.

Good plan, except you can't watch Brewers games on mlbtv, in market that is.
