Cutting the cord

Roku and Google could not come to an agreement. I was really hoping to get another cheap TCL Roku to use on my patio this summer.

“Our commitment is to always put your interests first and therefore we will continue to offer existing users access to YouTube TV unless Google takes actions that require the full removal of the channel. New subscribers will not be allowed at this time. It is also important that you do not delete the YouTube TV channel as it will not be available for download to Roku devices.”

That's why I went the Amazon Fire Stick route for YTTV. Much less chance of Amazon being bullied by Google than Roku.

I wouldn't bet on that. They've butted heads before, it's only within the last couple years that there have been official YouTube and YouTubeTV apps on Fire TV devices. The upside with Fire TV is that side loading options are available, meaning you can hack your device and download unofficial apps that let you use those services w/o Google really having any say over it.

I have cable and cable only.

I have no need for anything else.

Kids are grown and gone, no need for Disney.

No interest in netflix or any of those other services.

Cable has all I need, and no stress for Brewer games.

How much do you pay per month for Spectrum cable service, if you don't mind me asking?

$180 plus change.

Includes internet and a landline.

This is easily over double the cost I pay for my steaming, internet, and phone. That is why people cut the cord. Maybe a bit more hassle but much cheaper. You are paying for the convenience. If you are so happy about your service, it makes me wonder why you are posting in the cutting the cord thread.

Right and as recent as last year YouTube TV had Brewers games. This is the first season they don't.

I don't think anyone that has chosen to cut the cord and chosen streaming is crashing into other people's conversations of why they still have cable and telling them they're wrong. The cable model still makes sense for people even if they just don't want to deal with learning how to navigate streaming television.

My parents were clinging to cable as their bill kept going up and up, finally my dad told my mom, "Hey, we're going to try YouTube TV for a month and if it doesn't work out we can always go back to cable." My mom complained about YTTV for a couple weeks but once she got used to it she ended up liking it. Yes there were still compromises but staying with cable comes with compromises too.

YTTVs unlimited DVR is probably a big factor, it just records everything, they don't need to worry about overlapping show times or being restricted to 2 simultaneous show recordings. It's easy now, their shows are just there when they want them, all of them. I swear I would visit them once a week and the gymnastics they needed to do just managing the rinky dink DVR the cable company provided them was so annoying I can only imagine what their day to day routine was like.

Question on internet streaming...anyone have that TMobile home internet service that uses 5G and a gateway device they send you? Our area west of MPLS just got this service option available, and I'm contemplating dropping my local cable internet provider and trying it out if streaming speeds are ok - seems like a decent value ($60/month).

I was just looking into that this yesterday, but I'm not close enough to the 5G towers to be able to use it. Ironically, my local township just paid for the infrastructure to add a little satellite dish-looking device on your house and get internet access (http://www.netwavebroadband.net/), but I'm guessing it will be overcome by 5G shortly...

I've had it for about 9 months. I've only gotten about 35Mpbs not the 50 they advertise, but overall few issues with outages or dropped signal (most streaming has been smooth). There isn't a modem/router based speedtest like I can do with Spectrum, but even my 200Mbps advertised Spectrum line comes in at 150-160. You probably cant stream 4K to 3 devices, but it should handle most streaming needs depending on your circumstances.

Thanks for the info! I think we're going to order and try it out for a bit to see how it does and then decide whether to return it or cancel our current service. Medicaom advertises 100Mbps for the current setup we have but tests indicate it hardly ever gets above 50 and we've had out own sporadic outages/dropped signals with it from time to time.

I just decided to pony up and buy a mesh network (Google Nest WiFi router and one access point). Now I am getting the speeds Spectrum is advertising both on my wired connection and my wireless devices (if they are capable) - 225mbps. My max local phone speed is about 425mbps. I have no idea why I need that much speed now, but we are set for the future.

I also had trouble getting the Bally Sports app working on my Roku. You have to create an account and login. The is one page that ends in /account and another that ends in /activate. It's annoying...but it did at least wok for me

I went out and bought a smart TV (Fire edition) and kind of figured it would carry the BallySports app since the little Fire sticks appear to have it. So either I am an idiot and can't find the app or it just doesn't have it. Seems hard to believe, but I have looked everywhere and it looks like that app just isn't on the TV to download.

That being said what do people use for the little streaming sticks? Fire TV? Roku? They are the same price so I am not sure if either is really that much better. I basically just need one to get BallySports, the TV has YoutubeTV etc.

You can download the Bally app on a Roku device. I haven't felt the need to do that, though, as I can just watch the Brewers on the Bally Sports channel on AT&T TV. What are you going to use as your cable provider in order to access the BallySports app?

Spectrum, figured I would probably get a Roku stick since I know that has Bally. Fire sticks are suppose to have it too, but of course I would have expected the smart TV version to have it too...but I guess that isn't the case.

First thing as with any TV, update firmware to make sure you have most current version. Since Bally is so new, that may be why it's not showing up. You shouldn't need to buy another device. If you still don't see it, you have to search for the app- I had to do that on one of my TVs. But I have 2 smart TVs, another with a Firestick, and a fourth with Roku- I can get the Bally app on all of them.

You gave me the motivation to do it again. I reset it back to factory settings, set it up again, and then checked for an update in the menu. It finally had Bally Sports on it. So strange.

Is anyone getting a "You are not entitled to this content" error message on the Bally app? Been getting it across devices. Going thru DirecTV credentials.

It's been over a week, and no reboot, re-log in, update or anything has fixed it. And the suggestion to go to the help site does nothing.

Apologies if I have missed this somewhere in the thread.

For those who stream via MLB.tv, how many gb would you estimate you use for a typical game, say 3 hrs?

Also, it's somewhat ambiguous regarding postseason. It says you can live stream all star and world series but no mention of the other postseason games. Should I interpret that as the playoff games are not included?

I purchased now Direct TV Stream in March so I can watch the Brewers, but I realized that I was spending 90 dollars a month to only watch the Brewers, so that went away this morning and was replaced with Sling TV for half the cost. I can still watch the National TV Bucks games and most Marquette games, which for me is good enough. My only complaint is FOX is the only local channel you get, so I can't DVR the very few shows I watch over the air.

You could get a Amazon Fire TV Recast. They are about $250 and they usually come in a pack of two. This will allow you to DVR over the air and there are some cheaper options also.

I was just going to re-sign up for Hulu and can watch most stuff the day after
