Brewers Sign RP David Phelps

Very nice, under the radar signing!

Have the brewers been the most active in free agency? Seems like we have signed a ton of players compared to most.

With Phelps we have signed the 3rd most players in the NL for the 6th highest total dollar amount...

The Brewers have a bunch of "high ceiling, high upside" pen arms available to them, but the majority of those guys also have a very low floor. Phelps is the opposite. He doesn't have a huge arm (91-92), but generally stays out of trouble and does a solid job keeping the ball in the park. He's a solid "bridge" guy to Hader and Knebel, and should be able to keep his ERA in the mid to low 3s. He's a guy that should be able to successfully pick up the innings lost with Junior Guerra leaving town.

Obviously we don't know the contract details yet, but it's tough to see any negatives to this deal. Phelps isn't a "needle mover" per se, but he's a guy that can hopefully give you 80 innings, some of which will be high-leverage.

David Phelps will earn $1.25 million in 2020 with up to $1.9 million in performance bonuses based on appearances, per source. Phelps’ 2021 club option is worth $4.5 million ($250K buyout), also with $1.9 million in performance bonuses based on appearances.

That's a steal for this year. Next year would be pricier, but if he pitches the way he did in 2016-2017 (before going down with Tommy John surgery), it might be worth it.

This is a solid signing. He’s always been a solid reliable bullpen arm. The Brewers are starting to put together a very solid bullpen.

Hader

Knebel (when healthy)

Suter

Peralta

Phelps

Claudio

Wahl

Feyereisen

Yardley

T. Williams

D. Williams

Black

Really liking how the bullpen looks as it sits today. I’m hoping for maybe one more signing to really put us into the elite bullpen category.

Not to be that guy, but I personally think Peralta is going to force the Brewers hand and force them to give him a rotation spot. I suppose it's mostly irrelevant as most likely arm to lose his job is Houser, and he'd do fine in the bullpen.

Also, no guarantee the Brewers are done. I would bet we'll bring in multiple more arms at least on minor league deals, but still a solid chance we grab an arm on another low $ major league deal.

it appears that david phelps has two minor league options remaining, but enough service time to refuse the optional assignment.

a corresponding move needs to be made on the 40-man roster.

the last time the brewers acquired an infielder with a full 40-man, they bumped a pitcher. the injury to luis urias may protect an infielder from being bumped.

But did we also cut the most money from last year's roster?

Impossible to say until the final numbers come out, but a quick perusal of Cots indicates the Cubs project for about a 184 million opening day payroll for 2020 compared to 237 million to end 2019, so the best answer to your question at this point is probably not.

Stearns has done a lot, but fans being fans, they're always going to want more. I think we've been a bit spoiled by "big name" deals over the past two years, so this year has been a bit of a buzzkill for anyone wanting to see another "big name" deal. Stearns made some interesting deals early, but then did a bunch of "boring" moves. Hopefully a bunch of "boring" moves are better than one or two "exciting" ones.

To this particular move, Phelps should be a solid-but-not-spectacular addition that should help the Brewers win games. For the "can we win in 2020" crowd, this should help us do that. One extra win could be the difference between making the playoffs or not. For the "don't hurt the future" crowd, other than $250k in 2021, this doesn't hurt our future at all. While "boring," I think that makes this small move a win-win.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."
