Mike Morin signed to Minor league contract with spring training invite

morin is out of minor league options if he makes the 26-man roster. he has been outrighted to the minor leagues before, so if the brewers add him to the 26-man and then wish to send him to the minors upon clearing waivers, morin can refuse the assignment and become a free agent.

morin becomes the eighth non-roster invitee to camp.

This could be meaningful, because Morin looks like a decent middle reliever, but the kind of guy you would like to be able to shuffle back-and-forth to the minors when the bullpen needs a fresh arm. Good depth signing on a minor league deal.

A no-lose possibility with some positive qualities & track record (albeit not exactly glowing).

He was decent with MN last year before they let him go. They turned over some okay pieces of their bullpen in quick succession last year & Morin was a roster casualty in that process. Folks here generally thought Morin was nothing special but at least solid, so his release was a bit surprising.

2019 - 4.62 ERA over 50 2/3 innings with a 26/10 K/BB ratio

Big giant MEH...

Why must everything be a “no lose, mediocre upside” proposition? I don’t see anything here besides a boy I hope he gets through the 7th guy. I guess we’ll just camp on our money Ted. :rolleyes

For what its worth.

Last year was his best year in ages. He started throwing a sinking FB 10x as much as he had in any of the past 5 years. His CH is a good pitch which he threw more often than any year except 2015.

Sinker Change guy? Scrap the slider and standard FB? It's very meh but he did recently change his FB and has 1 high quality pitch.

It's an interesting profile. 96th percentile in exit velocity allowed (As in among the lowest), 98th percentile for hard hit %. But 1st percentile for K%, 8th percentile for spin rate. Brewers seem to be voerrepresented among the low EV pitchers. Maybe just a coincidence, but looking over the lowest EVs against over the last several years you find more Brewers than you'd expect. Jeffress and Suter show up near the top repeatedly. Albers and Claudio are good at it as well, and you find guys like Soria and Black were top 10 at least one year. Again it might not be the specific thing they are looking at, but when you have a value-focused FO it very well might be. Find players who are undervalued because of their skillset (Or rather what their skillset lacks; the high spin rate 4-seamers up in the zone that generate whiffs), but who are really good at what they do.

As a sidenote it's quite interesting to see what happens when you combine the ability to limit contact with high velocity; you get the profile of a Brandon Woodruff or Adrian Houser who both limit hard contact while also striking batters out at a good clip. And that Woodruff unlocked a lot of his success when he started throwing the 2-seamer (and gained velo), when that's something that the game generally has moved away from. But it's also about maximizing what you've got; if your spin rate is poor, don't rely so much on the high 4-seamers and instead throw where the low spin rate is actually a benefit. The back-and-forth battle between pitchers and hitters, the trends in their approach etc. is fascinating. I hope to see more of the judicious zigging when other zag from the Brewers; follow the data where it takes you and by all means jump aboard the strikeout bandwagon, but also look to find the players who don't fit the mould but are good anyway, and try to figure out what it is that makes their stuff work. I believe we'll see more of this, with a lot of pitchers with deception and wonky mechanics that the Brewers have targeted.

Anyway, that went off topic; went down a rabbit hole on baseballsavant as I looked up Morin's batted ball profile. Again I wouldn't necessarily put too much weight on a minor league signing or assuming he'll have any impact, but I do think it's part of a wider trend. Looking forward to seeing if that's accurat.e

Get a brain Morin.

so, if you're the marlins, and your collective player pool has just been decimated, do you try to put in a claim for a guy with major league experience (and likely more experience than many in your cpp)? based on their 2019 record, they'd have first dibs on any national league player placed on outright waivers, including mike morin.
