Astros

It is probably too early to speculate what they will be doing moving forward but with the blow to their franchise after yesterdays announcement and the subsequent firings, is anyone else looking at the organization and thinking that maybe they are looking to shed contracts? I had heard that the hope was to get under the luxury tax number. Could they be looking to move Greinke or Verlander to net some prospects? Each has 2 years left on their contract, each are getting up there in age but each are also top of the line starters. I know speculation is that we are working to lower our payroll but I could also see a situation where MA becomes willing to go after one of them and stretch for the frontliner if it is a possibility. So a few things:

Do you think the Astros look to tear it down?

If you are DS, do you try to convince MA to stretch the budget to try to go after one of them?

What do you think it would take to get Greinke or Verlander?

Outside of the Correa rumblings earlier this winter, I'm not sure the Astros would change course this offseason based on a result from the investigation. Unless there's something additional we are unaware of that fractures the clubhouse, they still have a fantastic team and I'd be surprised if gutted them. If anything, I think they'd want to prove that they're still a WS contender after the results of their title season being brought into question.

If I was the Astros owner, I'd trade away the team and begin anew. It won't happen but I would want a clean slate. I would want an opportunity to erase the black mark they have become as an organization.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

What's probably more likely is they have added motivation heading into the season and have another big year. Kinda like how everytime the Patriots get caught cheating, they get all mad and self-righteous and use it as added motivation all season. As if they're like "how dare you catch us cheating...we'll show you!". Hopefully that's not the case. I would much moreso prefer them be terrible this year. Maybe Trout can finally get a playoff appearance...

Doesn't make any sense to tank again until 2021, since they don't have their picks back until 2022.

I'd imagine the Astros have a plan similar to the one that former Cleveland Indians catcher Jake Taylor had when he found out the team's owner was trying to sabotage the team so she could move it to Miami..."Win the whole (ahem) thing."
