I get that, but I was hoping that we were past the point of signing guys to cheap deals hoping for league average. I have seen upside in most every move this offseason, but this one is puzzling. This guy has had a long career of mediocrity.

Do we expect or hope anything more than mediocrity at 3B at this point? There are no options out there that cost less than 100 Mil that you can expect or hope for anything more than mediocrity. For example, mediocrity for 2-3 mil from him or mediocrity for 15 mil from Seager. He had an injury rampaged 2019, before that he was perfectly solid player. Who knows if he bounces back but seems pretty low risk to me and there is upside. He's also a contact low K guy, which I think almost all of us have been clamoring to get more of those guys on the roster

I really would have preferred to get someone like Walker as a bench player/timeshare option. I think at least the floor on Walker would have been better than Gyorko and likely would be about the same price. I still would like to see a 3b move for more certainty.

Oof. I've been pleasantly surprised in the end by more Stearns moves than I can count, but this has not been a very exciting offseason on the FA front so far. Would like this a lot more if it were a minor league depth move and not someone they clearly intend to have on their roster.

I am not arguing staunchly in favor of this, but Gyorko was "Moustakas-esque" in 2016-2017, albeit with less games played due to being on the other side of the platoon.

So there is a world where this is a great move. But I'm not expecting it.

I personally like Seager's upside much more being a lefty playing half his game in a LHH paradise. I suppose if Gyorko is your RHH utility infielder, and Sogard is your LHH utility infielder, that's fine. But if that is your main 3B platoon, gross.

Huge LHP vs RHP splits! Could be the option vs lefties

And if he's doing well can handle the RH side of 1B platoon too if/when Braun is hurt. Remember Smoak is weaker vs Lefties. Just another flexible roster guy. Hey, they're panning for gold with a bunch of guys, just need one of them to pan out and be league average.

Sure, one will cost next to nothing but the other has a 3 year commitment for a ton of money. And regardless, sure it's semantics but anyone that thinks what Seager could do is more than 'mediocrity' probably has a bit too high of expectations. He's essentially had one season above mediocre in his whole career, he just parlayed into a big contract. There is a very real possibility Gyorko could play and put up a 270/340 20+ HR stat line for close to vet minimum. If he flops, you're out nothing. Or, maybe he just handles the RH side of a platoon and combine him and Sogard together and you get some pretty solid stats. Very low risk and there is no clear easy better option that doesn't cost 100+ mil

So, can someone much smarter than me project what a Sogard/Gyorko platoon might look like in terms of production this year (assuming that they both perform up to their standards) in comparison to what we had this past year with Moose/Shaw? Maybe it's not as bad as it appears to me on the surface?
