Dodgers sign Jimmy Nelson

We could play the what if game till the end of time. In reality it likely doesn’t end up like the perfect what if situation that is made up. Nelson very well could have ended up regressing...arguably more likely than him taking the next step forward. If we had a healthy Nelson we possibly don’t have someone like Wade Miley signed in 2018, who pitched about as productive as you could imagine for any pitcher. Thus we lose more games, don’t win the division, and lose the WC game...never even making the NLCS. Nelson being on the team could have meant a Peralta and Woodruff never gets a real chance in 2018 and instead one gets shipped off in the offseason...never realizing what we potentially had.

What happened to Nelson sucked, but things turned out just fine for us. For better or worse I don’t think we would be miraculously better off if he had never gotten injured. His injury ended up causing a lot of positive dominos to fall.

Jimmy was totally average-ish at best until 2017. It's possible he turned the corner, figured it out, whatever you want to call it but it's also just as likely that 2017 was his ceiling, career year, or a total fluke and would turn back into a mid-rotation starter in 2018. Still the best starter the organization has developed since Gallardo, which is an embarrassment.
