Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2020

Coffee changed my life. I was never a morning person until I figured out the power of coffee in my mid-20s. Simply amazing stuff.

I feel this way too but I do wonder how valid it is. It seems that after a while, the morning cup just brings me back to where I was before I started drinking it at all. I can't handle more than one cup or I get the shakes.

Is having coffee with dessert an older people thing? My parents and grandparents go that route constantly but I never see any younger person doing it.

Coffee has been served with dessert in fine dining restaurants for many years, so if people grew up with that experience, then I can see them expecting the two to go together.

And the hot liquid helps melt away some of the stickiness of cake frosting, pie filling, etc. So while it may be generational, it's also not without merit.

This is exactly true. In general of course, I'm sure some are different but you have to wonder if that's more placebo effect than anything else. Same applies to the people that need to hammer 5 monsters a day.

For coffee/dessert topic. I want to say this is partly due to, trying to think of a way to say it, "trying to stay regular."

One of the few things I like about myself is that I have absolutely no need or interest in coffee.

I have never even taken a sip of the stuff...

54 years and doing fine without it.

Now booze on the other hand... :)

I had brunch at a Kurdish place in Chicago and they had the most amazing coffee. I guess they roast the beans with pistachios so it ends up very nutty and kind of sweet.

Same. 34 and have never tried it. The wife tries to get me every time she has a cup, but I just don't care for it. Soda on the other hand...yikes. That's where I get my caffeine. Did anyway. 9 days without a soda.

To be fair, the smell of it, and coffee flavored ice cream and candy, etc. kept me off it for 30 years. I always thought it smelled gross and any sip I'd had from my parents as a kid was disgusting. It still is kind of objectively a bad taste, a lot of research has been done on that topic. It in no way tastes "good" but people still love it, and it's more than just caffeine. Even as someone who loves it I would never say black coffee tastes "good" per se.

YYZ is an awesome track...

Fellow RUSH fan I presume?

I have grown to really enjoy their music from a musical perspective lately. I was first interested in the late 80's when I found out the Wisconsin Marching Band had taken some of their drum line cadence from Neal Peart.

As time has gone on, I have come to appreciate them as instrumental musicians. There are a lot of acts that fire up their Macbook Pros, slap together some riffs, turn on the autotuner, and make some tracks. This is a stark difference than these three guys.

I did not know what Geddy Lee had taken his inspiration from Yes and Peart from the Who (and others). I liked Yes as a teen. I guess I'm influenced by the late 70's and early 80's...

I just watched a documentary on Rush shot in 2010. All three of them are absolute virtuosos on their respective instruments (Geddy on two). Their first big tour was opening for Kiss. Geddy had nothing but good things to say about them. Gene Simmons made fun of them for not partying at all.

One other interesting thing I learned is that they tried to record La Villa Strangiato all at once rather than split it up into parts. Took them 11 days and they finally gave up and recorded it as three separate tracks and then fused them together.

I was looking for a cover of Ring of Fire for some reason and came across a band called Dragonforce and thought it was really cool. Sure... it is quite hard, but the runs with the guitars is very cool. Not quite the same as Rush, Genesis, etc., but instrumentalists nonetheless.

Interesting since the world knows that Gene Simmons is not, and has never been a partier himself. His party has always been women. He doesn't drink or do drugs, and never has.

I never mentioned drugs or alcohol. He was referring to women.

How do you know you don't care for it if you've never tried it?

The smell and the look of it. You have never known you wont like something by just looking at it or smelling it? Weird thing to question.

Yes and sometimes I try that thing and realize I was wrong. Oysters for example.

Yep, and sometimes we don't because we know we'll be correct. I have no desire to go swim in the middle of the ocean either and I will never try it.

Your question made it seem like you took issue with the fact that I have no desire to even try coffee. Just seemed like a weird thing to question.

Well you could die swimming in the middle of the ocean. Taking a few sips of coffee won't kill you (unless you are married to this guy: https://abcnews.go.com/US/michigan-man-poisoned-wifes-coffee-sentenced-60-weekend/story?id=64725401). Not trying it seems weird to me. Different strokes for each of us.

Right on. I really dislike black foods and drinks, however irrational. I suppose if I did try it I would have to load up the cream and sugar.

To me coffee is an acquired taste much like beer, tea, liquor, etc. And I am talking actual coffee that isn't loaded with cream/sugar...cause that is hardly a coffee taste then. I thought coffee was a putrid taste, but after you drink it a bit you are used to it. I don't necessarily like the taste, but it is drinkable now.

I never saw the point of drinking black coffee either. To me it just tasted like flavorless hot water. It's not really something that's going to offend your tastebuds, more likely it will just leave you severely underwhelmed by any of your expectations.

Coffee flavored foods (like tiramisu) are a totally different story, there you can taste what coffee generally tastes like.

It is. However, the Great Value/McCafe/Dunkin bag that you get at the grocery store is just nothing at all like getting a genuine roast from a farm or a legit cafe that knows what they're doing. Don't get me wrong, the former is what I drink 99% of the time. But when I'm on vacation and get the good stuff somewhere, you realize most of what we're drinking is not really coffee.

I re-tried coffee about 4 years ago. As I think some said, it's an acquired taste and of course people's tastes change so I figured I should give it another chance. Same, hated the 3-4 I tasted. I guess I did taste a few on a trip to New Zealand a few months as my friends are coffee people, yea didn't like any of it. Which reminds me of the really the main point, essentially every morning on that trip had to revolve around 'needing' coffee. Which of course was not a big deal as we usually had nothing urgent to do but still. So, yea I don't think I'll change.
