Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2020

Agree Turborickey. I coach high school football and track and field. My phone is blowing up every day from my athletes asking about what is going to happen with their season. The WIAA is taking a wait and see approach but I am getting to the point where they need to make a call for the sanity of everyone. We are still doing practices every day virtually, and actually the athletes are really engaged in it, but I can tell they really just want to have a decision made.

There will be no spring sports this year. I don't know how anyone could think that there is a possibility that they might happen.

We were told to plan a short conference schedule with the tournament series to follow.

When schools were closed (however long ago that was) our AD emailed all the coaches about when we could potentially start back up and saying WIAA rules say you have to have 7 practices before your first competition. So even if school open May 1, that first week plus a day or two will be practice which basically gives you three weeks for a season. Track might be able to do it since the weather won't effect it quite as much but baseball and softball are totally weather dependent. May can give you some dry weather but a few rainy days and you've wiped out half of your already shortened season. Something is better than nothing but is a 4 or 5 game season really worth it? I supposed you could push the season a few weeks into June but there's been zero support for doing that in all my years of coaching.

All that is irrelevant though since there's no way schools will be opening anymore this school year.

It's a dirty, rotten shame for kids of all ages to have to be going through this - the longterm impact of disrupting their routines, scholastic development, and preventing them from socializing and participating in their hobbies/interests is a vastly underestimated side effect of the measures we are putting ourselves through, IMO. It's one of those impacts that doesn't carry an easily quantifiable dollar value or physical health statistic with it, but it's devastating for other reasons that are probably longer lasting because it will impact the rest of their life.

I consider myself fortunate to be a few decades removed from my high school/collegiate years so I'm not dealing with this personally as a young adult, and have kids who are young enough to hopefully avoid significant disruption in their lives because they are at the start of elementary school. That said, I can see how hard it is for my 1st grader to not have public gymnastics/swimming activities or not have the ability to see her friends in person at school and not get that socialization with her peers. It's got to be much worse for people on the edge of adulthood basically getting their lives shut down.

We only need 4 practices before our first competition. You are right though, the spring season stinks for weather. I can't imagine we are going back either, but my principal just told us today Evers has a meeting tomorrow(or something soon) where they will advise the next steps. I will be shocked if we are able to have a season at all as well.

They could always lift the rule for the number of practices before a competition. Doubtful on that too but ya never know.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Why is getting on a plane early an important thing and even an indicator of class and status?

Everyone on the plane quite literally departs the airport and arrives at the destination at the same exact time.

Everyone needs to wait. Why is it better to wait in a plane than in a concourse?

I agree, but I can't help think that this was a problem limited to the Before Times. I assume I'll be paying at least double what I did previously to fly in the future and doing it far less often than before.

Being in the front of the plane is more important imo. Means you get off waaaaay faster.

That being said getting on earlier is only really important if you are really determined to have your carry on not checked under any circumstances.

They should let you board and deplane from both the front and back doors.

Sometimes we get to deplane from both ends when arriving in Bethel. No idea why it isn't all the time here, since there's no jetway or anything, just movable steps. When the plane I'm on lands, I want out of it ASAP. I hate flying into O'Hare because after you land you taxi for 20 minutes, and then usually spend another 20 minutes in the penalty box waiting for a gate to be available to deplane.

It's important because the overhead bins get full and the people who paid the most (for the flight and over time with that airline) then get screwed out of overhead space. Also, you are sitting in your seat (getting served drinks in first class) instead of standing in the jetway waiting for clueless people trying to figure out where their seat is, who in the family is taking what seat, trying to stuff a way-bigger-than-allowed bag into the overhead.

They should let you board and deplane from both the front and back doors.

I've done that a few times on Jet Blue at the Long Beach airport. At smaller airports, not much of a security/safety risk. At larger airports, a much bigger safety/security risk.

Exactly.

Not a problem anymore though, nobody is going to be flying a full airplane for a long time!

Yeah they'd have to get new jetways.

No, it deserves what it gets because it NEVER has long enough sleeves.

Are you a primate? Mine fit perfectly and I think I'd like to wear them 365 days a year.

Counterpoint: The sleeves are ALWAYS comically long on me.

I am lucky to be sized accordingly. My sleeves cover my wrists and no further. I can wash the dishes without them getting wet. Team Jim with the victory!

As for the tri blend shirts that stout mentioned above, I'm glad to leave those on the rack for the rest of you. They are often too thin and clingy, or they are cut for a fitter, younger person.

On a similar note, why are there long-sleeve shirts / tops that have thumb holes?
