Relief Pitchers, 12/24

With Knebel's uncertainty to start the season and with Wahl and Black being unproven, there are some upgrades to be made to the pen.

1.) Pedro Strop- An incentive based option to close on non-Hader days.

2.) Hector Rondon- An incentive based option to close on non-Hader days.

3.) Collin McHugh- Swing man. Piggy back Burned and Peralta.

4.) Arodys Vizcaino- Two year deal. May be paying for rehabilitation. Could be lightening in a bottle.

5.) Will Harris- Probably too expensive but if he had an option to close who knows.

6.) Ryan Buchter- Awesome stat lines but in a huge park.

7.) Andrew Cashner- Would actually challenge for a rotation spot.

8.) Sam Dyson- Decent back end experience.

Depth chart for relievers looks something like

Hader

Knebel

Suter

Claudio

Peralta

Black

Faria

D Williams

Wahl

Burnes

Beyond those 10, we take a considerable jump back to Taylor Williams and other minor leaguers. Also Burnes/Peralta could factor into the rotation. Only the top 4 of the above are locked into spots, the rest I believe have options. I think adding another arm would certainly make sense, I think one good one would be enough...preferably one tough on RH hitters.

I don't think we can count on Knebel until about June or so. I know he is projected to return in May I just don't believe he will be ready by May and it maybe closer to mid June when he will be available.

It is still too early to speculate when he will be available but I am taking the May schedule with a grain of salt. We should know more by the end of spring training if it will be May or later.

Put me down for Cishek McHugh and Walker.

Walker as a swing man. (Woodruff Anderson are in, Houser Linblom Lauer could all be bumped to the pen by Walker if he's on and healthy)

McHugh as the closer/2 Ip guy if Knebel takes the role back. 2.76 ERA career out of the pen over 114 innings. 10 more innings in the PS at 2.7 ERA.

Cishek SU and he's basically alternated years being elite and solid. 2020 points towards elite.

Free Hader up to be a weapon.

Cishek McHugh 8-9

Hader weapon

Peralta Walker and Suter 1 time through the order guys.

Black because of potential and no options

Claudio D Williams Wahl (pick 1 and start the shuttle bus)

Knebel IL to start the year.

At the end of the day I'd want the pen to be a traditional 8-9 (note, this doesn't mean Hader wouldn't get handed the ball in the 8th to close the game, but if he got weird in a bad way you got options) and 6 1 time through the order guys. Tell Rasmussen and Burnes (as a starter to bump Houser into the pen) to hurry up.

I know I'm being greedy but Walker Cishek McHugh and Rich Hill would make for one heck of a smoke and mirrors pitching staff.

8.) Sam Dyson- Decent back end experience.

Buchter is still out of work because he's a lefty specialist. I really wish Stearns would have went with Buchter instead of bringing back Claudio.

Dyson will miss next season, capsule repair surgery in right shoulder.

Brandon Kintzler had a terrible finish as a Brewer but I wouldn't rule him out. 54.7% ground ball rate last year and a solid 2.68 ERA and 3.56 FIP.

No thanks on Strop. He's just too erratic. Rondon allows almost a hit per inning and has a 4.96 FIP. Again, not worth the money he'd want. The rest of the guys except McHugh are back end of the pen type guys that the Brewers could fill cheaper and with younger guys on the way up. Buchter's 4.98 FIP says he's not a fit for Miller Park.

In lieu of a bigger free agent starter, I would sign both Dellin Bettances and Colin McHugh.

I think almost the entire Brewer faithful agree with you.

Did I read somewhere Bettances is seeking a 1/10 contract? Has McHugh recovered from the elbow pain? Last I heard about him was the Astros had shut him down for the season back in September.

I am starting to think David will be adding to pen instead of starting pitcher.

I think he might do both in one move. My guess is he's looking for a FA starter out there who might be worth transitioning to the pen like he did with Guerra in the past. That guy could also provide rotation insurance. Maybe a guy like Homer Bailey or Ivan Nova? I get that Bailey has never pitched out of the pen, but I think he'd be effective and be able to extend his career.

Daniel Hudson is very intriguing to me. Washington would like him back but haven't offered beyond a one year deal Supposedly Hudson has several multiyear offers. Two years ago the Brewers gave Matt Albers a 2 year deal. I think Hudson despite his injury history would be a better gamble than Albers was.

I don’t see much of a chance that Hudson signs for $5 million over 2 years though.

I see Hudson getting at least $5 million per over two years the way the reliever market has gone thus far.

Hudson is worth at least double what Albers was the year the Brewers signed him. After not signing Pomeranz and letting Guerra go elsewhere, the Brewers have very little invested in their pen. I know they're counting on Black, Peralta, and the return of Knebel by June, but they could sure use a vet in the mix to cover late innings.

I'd love Colin McHugh if he's healthy. He kills two birds with 1 stone. He's a very good reliever and can be rotation depth if needed. He's on the older side, but coming off an injury so he might be in line for a Stearns specials (1 year deal with a mutual option to defer some money).

I think the Brewers will likely make a signing right before opening day like they did with Dan Jennings and Alex Wilson the past two seasons. I hope they do sign a higher caliber reliever like a McHugh or Cishek though.

The tough thing is Faria, Black, D. Guerra, and T. Williams are all out of options. So they'll have to boot one of those guys most likely in favor of any free agent addition. It's possible none of those guys are that big of a loss, but we've seen the Brewers like to put off making a decision for as long as possible. Knebel likely starting the year on the IL helps delay a decision because they probably just have Hader, Suter, and Claudio as opening day locks if healthy.

Way too many guys with no options in the pen... how is this a Stearns kind of bullpen?

Well last year and in waivers he's added Feyereisen and Yardley to add to Claudio Devin Wahl who have options. I think Black Guerra Faria and TWilliams leave 1 man standing when all is said and done and I expect it to be Black.

I don't see this as a DS typical pen but the only reason for that is that TWilliams and Guerra aged out. Faria/Black was a 2 man coin flip.

The AAA pen could be loaded with a lot of guys who have options.

Feyereisen Yardley Wahl Devin Perdomo Claudio who are on the 40. Add Barker who isn't on the 40 man. A few more who are further down the farm.

Knebel on the IL

Hader Peralta Suter Black

Clearly he still has some work to do or the pens going to have TWilliams (7th), Faria (garbage long 8), Devin (6th) and Claudio (5th). This is why I want Cishek, McHugh and TWalker.

No one wants to limp into the regular season like that. Truly, the entire roster is set right now except 3b and RP.

Imo Claudio was re-signed and is a lock for the 26-man roster. Faria was so bad last year he will be DFA'd and possibly re-signed to a minor lg. deal because nobody will want him. I think Wahl (if healthy), T. Williams, and Feyereisen are the most likely to stick. I don't think Devin Williams is on the big lg. roster until he develops another pitch (his change-up was very erratic) to keep hitters off his fastball. I believe Stearns will bring in at least two other pen people soon. McHugh and Harris may be too expensive. Not a big fan of Cishek and his asking price could be too out-of-line for Stearns. There is a lot of work to do with the pen right now.

I'm kind of surprised they haven't brought in a pen arm yet. Makes me think they are waiting on the 3B dust to settle before spending any more money.

Sounds about right, a Sogard/Healy 3B cannot be the plan. When that's settled, that's when the relief help will be brought in.

Well then we are hosed. If Claudio is a lock Wahl TWilliams and Feyereisen makes 8. There's no room and you've pushed a number of our stash-able options into a position of need. Sink or swim without depth, so the team is toast. Signing a few Burch's will make this a lost year.

You say there's a lot of work to do after you basically say it's all set. Thanks for your opinion on how I'm wrong and then saying the opposite because you didn't count when you said I was wrong.
