Ryon Healy to Brewers

I'm ok with this signing as a depth move.

I can hardly think of a more underwhelming signing. I guess Stearns has to fill out the San Antonio roster somehow. If Healy is on the big league roster other than an injury replacement, it means Stearns has officially thrown in the towel for 2020.

If the Brewers just want a power guy for the 26th spot, could he be it?

I mean, unless I am forgetting someone, the bench is looking like

Whichever catcher isn't playing that day

Middle infield backup (Arcia?)

Gamel

left-handed corner infielder TBA

Even if the Brewers add a starting third baseman and a lefty corner infielder, the other 26th man options would be Taylor, Broxton, Peterson, Freitas and the two other 40-man middle infielders. They all obviously have more positional value, but if the Brewers just want a pinch hitter, Healy might be the best option.

While Healy does seem like the definition of a “AAAA Just a Guy” player, every once in awhile players like that take their game to another level. I think Stearns is doing a good job of bringing in depth to make up for the lack of depth in the upper levels of the farm system.

Healy is the definition of "just a guy". I'd wager the chances of him seeing more than 100 PA's in Milwaukee are entirely contingent on multiple guys getting hurt. I'm not super excited about the possibility of him getting a lot of playing time, but at the same time, there's worse options out there for backup plans. You can't just stash a bunch of proven, 2-3-4 WAR guys in AAA in case all your starters go down. That's just not how it works.

Healy hits for a decent bit of power, plays both corners, and uh.... yeah. :) He's AAA filler. Let's not get too up in arms about this.

This is a big part of why I like watching DS work. He seems to understand roster flexibility on a level unlike anyone prior to him in MKE. You see a signing like this and aren't wowed by it, but then you look at the depth that they have in AAA at 1b. You look at about 6-7 guys on the 40 man. You quickly see how Healy could be an upgrade that has nothing to do with the active 25.

The guy treats options like gold, and utilizes his 40 man roster. I had speculated about adding Thames and a RH power bat in case Braun got hurt at some point. He just added that RH 1b option and it won't require a 25 man spot. That's boy scout preparedness. Frietas as 1 option and is 30. Healy has 3 options and is 28.

Truly that's who Healy is here to compete with.

I don’t think Stearns is under any delusion here: Rodriguez, Healy, Petersen, et al. These are just bodies. It’s spring training competition. Maybe one of these guys make it. I gotta believe the best is yet to come. Trade? FA signing? Come on DS, it’s Christmas time.

Stearns just can't help himself on his way out of Walmart(where he does all of his FA shopping), he HAS to grab something off the clearance rack too.

Yeah, we got the joke.

:laughing :laughing

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I like this depth signing. He’s much more of a proven entity than you normally get especially when he still hasn’t 3 options remaining. He could also be a beneficial power bat off the bench but agree it’s more likely he’s cheap insurance if someone goes down.

His nickname is the Mayor of Dongtown

Uhhh....

Knowing that, I really hope he has a great spring and makes the team! I really want to see what the souvenir is on "Mayor of Dongtown" appreciation day!!! :laughing :embarrassed :laughing

The Mayor of Dongtown bobblehead has a chance to be really memorable.

I seem to recall a certain poster bringing up his name as early as October. Where's my finder's fee David? Somebody tell his agent "You're welcome"

Nice call. Also, I now have the song from Moana in my head...thanks.

Great, I didn't even connect the two but now I have that song in my head.

I initially strongly disliked this signing when I first initially heard about it while working and hearing it’s an MLB deal, but knowing that he has 3 options remaining, I’m fine with it. If he’s seeing any significant amount of time for us, it’s because our first couple MLB options are injured and missing significant time.

Not a bad depth option to have.
