Scooter Gennett

Been thinking over Scooter Gennett, and wonder if a reunion may bee just what the doctor ordered.

Gennett had two monster years with the Reds, then lost 2019 to injury. But the Baseball-Reference projections think he will pst an .802 OPS in about 300 PAs.

With that in mind, is it worth it to give him an offer structured like this?

2020: $3 million w/$500,000 bonus for 350 PAs, a $750,000 bonus for 450 PAs, and a $1 million bonus for 550 PAs.

2021: $4 million w/$500,000 bonus for 350 PAs, a $750,000 bonus for 450 PAs, and a $1 million bonus for 550 PAs.

2022: $7.5 million team option ($2 million buyout) that vests if he has 900 PAs over the 2020-2021 seasons

2023: $10 million team option that vests if he has 550 PAs in the 2022 season

He could play third base (he had 10 games there in 2017), and also has seen limited time in LF and RF.

Even if there were a place for him on the team, there would be absolutely no reason at all to throw 4 years at the guy. Never mind the fact Stearns has shown almost no interest in going multi-year with almost nobody but a very select few guys. I absolutely can't see going multi year with a guy who doesn't have a position. And 3rd base is not a position for Gennett.

How about a one year "prove yourself" contract. Assuming of course he can play a serviceable 1B. If he can't play 1B, and I've never seen anything saying he could, then I'd have no interest.

1 year 4 - 5 million.

Holy cats, Gennett had 2 walks (two) in 139 plate appearances last year. Like.... you have to be actively attempting to avoid getting on base to only draw 2 walks in 139 PA's. He's always had a relatively low walk rate, but that's something else entirely. .568 OPS and a -.7 WAR. That's absolutely someone who should get a "prove it" contract.

I agree. Scooter got extremely hot for a bit which inflates what some think about him. He needs to prove he is a reliable bat. Too many valleys to remember the peak for him for me.

He could pitch, too...but I dont think anyone wants to see that, either. That contract offer, while obviously meticulously figured and presented in the post, is a joke for a guy that really hasn't done anything close to deserve a multiyear commitment, particularly for a player who has been hurt alot recently and hasn't really proven that he's back to being the player he was in 2017-2018 while healthy.
