Giants sign Gausman - 1-year/$9M

Yeah, hard pass for 9M. We already have our own power arm high strikeout guy who got rocked every time out to try for ourselves in 2020 without paying 9M for one.

Now in no way shape or form am I saying they should have signed Gausman(yuck)...But i'm wondering, so far you have said "pass" on just about every FA signed this year. You realize the Brewers have 8 40 man spots to fill yet and about 40-$50 million to spend, right?? Who exactly would you like to see them spend it on?? It's an honest question, because I don't know.

I would have been happy with Didi at the 1/14 he got and I indicated in the Didi thread that I was interested in him.

I also expressed interest in the Happ thread at acquiring him and his contract if the Yankees made it worthwhile. I've also expressed that I would love to sign Ryu or Donaldson and said last night that Kris Bryant would be a perfect trade acquisition for us if it wasn't the Cubs involved who would be unlikely to deal him to us anyway.

If you think I've said pass to every single option to spend our money, you aren't looking in the right places. I'm opposed to spending the kind of stupid money on long term deals for guys in their 30s that is 95% guaranteed to look regrettable in 2 years.

I liked him as an option. I didn't think for one second that it would take upwards of 10 mil to get him. Lyles was a little steep but this is worse. Sure 1 year is nice but the dollars aren't.

Every option I see dry up that goes for more that I expected makes me wonder how rocky this market is going to be for MKE. It sure looks like a players market so far. Maybe not in longevity but certainly on AAV.

$9 mil seems a bit steep for this early for a bounce back candidate. I'm perfectly fine allowing Stearns to wait it out until February and take a flyer on any of the following who still haven't signed: Taijuan Walker, Alex Wood, Julio Terehan, Aaron Sanchez, Josh Lindblom, Wade Miley, Drew Smyly and Matt Moore

:indifferent You can't be serious, right?? They need a LEGIT #2 at worst, none of those guys are even solid #4's. How do any of them improve the rotation significantly?? They might as well light their money on fire.

If that is your thought process, I hope you are fully prepared for disappointment. Just be willing to say “bad on me” when Miley pitches like a solid #2 for the Brewers next year :)

Just bring back Jimmy Nelson for couple million and incentives. I have a feeling he's going to surprise a lot of people.

I think Alex Wood could be legitimate #2 material if he ever was fully healthy. But that's the problem...the guy is never fully healthy. We'll have to wait to see how Taijuan Walker comes back from injury...wouldn't be that surprising to see him reach #2 status.

I really like the idea of Alex Wood, but Walker is the guy who stands out as having the upside of being an elite arm if he’s able to put together a healthy season.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I sure can understand why people would not like Gausman. He really has been a career underachiever when looking at his raw stuff. I would have put a 2 year, 13 million dollar offer in front of him and then he would have had to pick between going into free agency again next year (could be a big payout, but his stock could also drop with a poor season) or take the extra guaranteed 4 million and have that money in the bank.

I'm guessing at worst he'd be a #4...but could prove to be much better if he turns out to be a late bloomer. He was a guy I would have been willing to take a chance on.

Overall the contract would have been pretty similar to Chacin's deal, obviously there was one great year and one bad year in that deal. No question the great year made the bad year much easier to take. But even if Chacin had been mediocre over both years of this deal, this one would have been forgotten shortly into the future because it just didn't represent a huge payroll commitment. We'd be talking roughly 5.5% of a 120 million dollar payroll here, IMO that's a reasonable figure to roll the dice on a player like Gausman.

What's with the hostility? He's proposing a bounce back candidate signing -- not a top-of-the-rotation acquisition.
