Per Jeff Passan

That's a lot of money.

Only 4 seasons with over 170 IP. I'd have rather spent that money on Rendon. Entirely possible they're privy to more info about Rendon's intentions so that going with Strasburg was a better choice for them.

Too bad Mark A. couldn't get the Freddie Mac appraiser's report on the Brewers back in time to guarantee that quarter of a billion dollar loan in time to out bid the Nats

sheesh that's a ton of money

Right! The last time Attanasio signed a contract that big, he bought the whole team.

I don't think Cole will be a $300m pitcher. Also worth noting significant deferrals in this deal. Cole is probably looking at 8/280 with minimal deferrals and an opt out after 3 or 4 years with a significant chunk of that money frontloaded. Maybe the first 4 years he gets 160. That would make more sense than $300m...that's just a crazy number.

Seeing what the free agent market is I think DS will be avoiding all but the mid to low levels of free agency right now. I would not expect any significant signings over the winter meetings. He will wait out this market surge and we'll be buying in January and February from what is left.

With that said, it could also mean he is even more active than usual on the trade market.

+1 on all counts

With that type of contract it is doubtful they will also sign Rendon.

I think I read that they would only be signing one or the other, and not spending on both.

I love baseball to my core but that is a stupid amount of money for any body to be paid to play professional baseball.

Stras is getting paid the equivalent of a fortune 500 CEO salary. Would you say his skill set is more or less unique than a CEO's?
