keon broxton minor league deal; postseason eligible

I fully expect Broxton to be our 5th OF. If he could just hit a bit more, he could carve out a Mike Cameron-like career.

Ray really needs to do something this year in the minors. He has seemed a fringe prospect for some time, and one good season does not make a star (Brad Nelson even had a couple good minor league seasons).

I agree, however one good season makes your value 'flippable' for a valuable asset (see: Grisham, Trent).

I agree he needs to come to play this year!

Exactly what I told some friends that were questioning us “giving up” on Grisham. I told them we added two valuable pieces with upside in part because we parted with a player that may have experienced a career year. Grisham gave us an initial boost, but some people seem to remember him raking in the majors

Keon is, arguably, better defensively than our Gold Glove center fielder. I’m glad he is back with the Brewers franchise. He can help the team, as depth at the very very least.

As long as he never starts a game (impossible with CC), and never pinch hits.

He is only useful as a defensive replacement LATE in games.

That seems a little harsh. We're definitely in trouble if he's a regular starter for us, but he did put up passable offensive numbers throughout his Brewers tenure: 796 PA, .318 wOBA, 93 wRC+, .222/.314/.422/.736

That's not bad for a defensive specialist fifth outfielder. Very similar profile to what the mighty Victor Robles produced for the Nationals last season, actually. Keon's 2019 season was a nightmare, of course, but that's why we are getting him on a minor league deal for nothing.

And maybe the analytics guys can help fix Keon... you never know.

Exactly the type of player spot 26 is ideal for, IMO. Defensive first guy, fantastic PR. Competent with a bat either early in the game or as your 3-4 PH.

Plus a fun personality. If they do end ups signing a guy like Castellanos to play RF, Broxton is the perfect defensive replacement late in games. The guy can run down anything out there, and is a ++ defender at all 3 OF spots.

Actually, a Yelich-Broxton-Cain alignment form left to right would be better, IMO.

Spot 26 is almost certainly a pitcher for every team in baseball. Broxton is a great spot 30 or so guy. Minor league depth.

Don't the Brewers usually carry 13 pitchers anyway?

In 2018 for the Brewers he was worth +1.1 fWAR in just 51 games despite hitting .179 and striking out 31.5% of the time, the bat is not the draw here :laughing (although he does give HR pop off the bench).

No downside to this signing, and I wouldn't be shocked if he makes the roster as a fifth outfielder over Tyrone Taylor and Corey Ray.

Yelich-Cain-Broxton defensive outfield of death

The problem is that's based on 51 games of outfield defense which is a statistically meaningless sample size. I'm not saying he isn't a great CF, but no one is that good.

It'll be interesting to see if your opinion becomes fact on opening day for every team in baseball, especially with the lack of a 5th starter needed by most teams until much later in the month.

It's a pitcher for the teams who ran with 12-man pitching staffs in the past. It's a position player for everyone else, including the Brewers, who usually had 13 pitchers.

He absolutely was that good in 2018.

With Yelich Braun Garcia and Cain as the top 4 OFs, I think Broxton just got a bit more interesting.

RF and LF are covered. Gamel shouldn't sniff a start there. The only place a sub starts is CF. If an injury pops up, Taylor is waiting in AAA.

Just saying.

  • 7 months later...

the brewers thought highly enough of keon broxton to include him on the 2018 nlds roster.

knowing that rosters can remain at 28, including the postseason, i think there's a good chance that they add him at some point.

he is easier to bury as the 28th man once pitchers are more stretched out, and is great to have as a late-inning defensive replacement or as a pinch runner (especially in extra innings with the automatic runner at second).
