Zack Wheeler to Phillies - 5 years/$118

..... In every single pro league teams spend out and bargains are there to be had. Money dries up, homes fill up. Guys miss out......

Well this year is a little different than prior years. The move to a 26 man roster, means that guys that nobody had room for last year, now the Yankees /Dodgers do. So the talent of those guys that were left without a chair when the music stopped might be a little less than prior years (at least among position players).

:laughing Oh stop it. Go back to bed now.

Why? Because he is right? If it isn't about money no one is going out of their way to pick Milwaukee except very rare exceptions.

I never mentioned Milwaukee in my post. It was a simple statement that it isn't ALWAYS about the money as some say it is, so I'll save both of your efforts to complain just to complain.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Not that Philly/Pennsylvania taxes are cheap, but my guess is the modest difference in contract offer between the White Sox and Phillies actually would have Wheeler taking more home playing for the Phillies based on state and local taxes. It could still easily be about the money that Wheeler & family actually see.

As a former resident of IL from college to a few years ago, I know that IL sucks.

I'm not complaining. I'm just pointing out that I don't care if it's "not always about money" unless that angle helps Milwaukee. I want the wife driven discount.

Ok so I'm complaining that they got a discount. I'm still not complaining at you.

I believe there probably have been players in the past that maybe have chosen Milwaukee based on their location. Aramis Ramirez comes to mind. Was there a discount? Not sure about that. But I'm sure it has happened. Unfortunately, some of the bigger named FA's don't hail from Milwaukee.

Zack Greinke might have picked Milwaukee over a large market if we offered the same deal. Will never know that, but that is about the only elite guy I can imagine.

Some guys also want to win, particularly veteran guys who haven't won before. If they've already made life-changing money, then it makes a lot of sense to go to a place where you are happy playing everyday where you enjoy your teammates, etc. It might even be as simple as not wanting to live in a downtown super urbanized area yet still wanting to get to the ballpark with a very reasonable commute. Tough to do that in NY, SF, LA, CHI, BOS, etc.

There are probably fewer of these guys than the opposite (those who WANT to live in a high rise condo downtown during the season), but it's different for everybody.

It's almost as if people don't remember that Woodruff Burnes Peralta Hader mowing down 5 innings was a huge reason why the 2018 team almost pulled it off. It's exactly why I want 3 middle of the road arms. Pineda Miley Lyles puts Burnes in AAA. Peralta Lauer and Suter comfortably in the pen. Need the 8 9 to let Hader roam. Await Burnes and Rasmussen.

The offense basically needs a Vogt, 2 Neil Walkers and a Thames LH masher. Not bank breaking additions.

Just looking at MLBTR, Kendrick would be a fantastic fit at 1b.

I'm in the same mindset as you. We don't need big names and their huge accompanying salaries. We need a lot of decent players to mix and match that won't have a negative effect on future teams. A deep team full of decent options is better than a top heavy team with nobody backing them up IMHO. I just don't like the idea of putting all our hopes on a couple players.

I'm not sure I agree with you on the specific players but I think that approach is the best way to go.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Well Narvaez is much more fun that a Vogt. 3B is still the issue I see with the options open. A lot of people have talked about a Thames Cron Thames Kendricks duo and that looks very strong platoon wise in theory. The 3b is the piece. Pineda just signed with the Twins. I'm willing to go very middle of the road on these pitchers. Now I'd look for Miley Lyles Gausman and Walker. The only guy I really want to SPEND on is Collin McHugh. I think 6/2 probably gets that done though. I think he's a 2IP RP ace and even has closer potential. He's been filthy out of the pen his entire career.
