Jimmy Nelson

We’d all love to see Nelson come back to Milwaukee and flourish.

My inclination would be for some sort of an incentive-driven deal. A low minimum guarantee with a chance to make it a lucrative year for him if he rebounds. I think Jimmy is smart enough to understand why it was too big of risk to go to arbitration with us given the circumstances. I wonder if he believes in himself to go the route I mentioned. It could make for a better payout than he would have gotten if things go well.

How should that be structured, and anyone else foresee him going for something like that with the Brewers?

I have no idea if it will be with the Brewers, but something similar to the deal Wainwright signed last winter could be interesting for Nelson.

$2mm base with $8mm in possible incentives.

Yeah I hope they can work something out. Jimmy looked good at times, especially with the breaking stuff, but then at other times just couldn't find the strike zone. Inconsistent command is something that can potentially be fixed, so if the Brewers think they can then go for it.

They wouldn’t have stood by Nelson for 2 years if they didn’t like him, and I’m sure they’d like him back. However by non-tendering him they only want him back at their price in a role of their choosing. If nobody in the major leagues likes Nelson more than the Brewers do I imagine he’ll be back in 2020. If some other team wants to guarantee him a roster spot, spot in the rotation, more money etc. he’ll be gone.

It also wouldn't surprise me to see Nelson pitching in Japan or Korea next season if MLB options are limited to non-roster spring training invitations to try and restore his value and resume his MLB career in 2021 or even 2022. Find a way to log innings under a guaranteed contract and show scouts he is better than he showed last summer - the velo was there, but it was obvious the feel/command and pitch mix wasn't consistent enough.

I'm rooting for him and hopefuly that if he does find a way to rebound and be a good MLB pitcher again it's with the Brewers somehow, someway
