Davies and Grisham to San Diego, Urias and Lauer to the Brewers

Keep trading with the Padres! Pretty amazing get. I thought Trent would be our LF after Braun is gone next year (and sits often this year), but LFers are much easier to get than SSs.

I wonder if Lauer might be a Pomeranz replacement in the pen (as well as a backup starter).

Thinking that Lauer steps right in the rotation. And my wish for a lefty starter is complete, no need for a free agent.

One fun note: Lauer was the Padres' opening day starter. He was terrific in spring training last year.

It appears he typically sits at 92-93 with his fastball, but has touched 96 on occasion. https://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=19316&position=P&statArr=&legend=1&split=base&time=daily&start=2018&end=2019&rtype=mult&gt1=15&dStatArray=FA&ymin=&ymax=

Interesting deal. Credit to somebody (MattYo, I think) who actually called the trade on here before it was in the media.

It’s not popular, but I’d hang on to Arcia. He is still young and I don’t think it makes sense to sell low unless he’s a locker room problem. I don’t believe that’s the case at all based on how the players interact. He’s warmly received out in the open by the other players. There’s talent in Arcia and I think much of his issues can be traced to immaturity (dumb approach at the plate, no improvement, lack of hustle and concentration). He can still be a utility infielder and bring defense late, etc. Counsell is not shy about in-game chess moves, and Arcia can play into that.

Competition has come in, hopefully to supplant him. If that doesn’t light a fire under his rear end, nothing will. Urias’ prospect pedigree is essentially comparable to what Arcia’s was at the same stage. For a variety of these reasons, I don’t move him.

Lauer doesn’t move the needle much for me but he may have the exact profile of a guy who is about to take a step forward based on his first round pedigree, fast ride through the minors, and strong experience for his age. That’s the type of guy who could possibly jump up. We will have to see.

I see a lot of skepticism on Grisham. I don’t think it’s the overwhelming steal being touted. Grisham took a big step forward and if you look at his skill set, this is a guy who can bring a lot of juice to the lineup.

If Corey Ray can put it together this year, long term, he can fill that Grisham role. Ray has shown himself to be an extra base machine if he can turn the corner. Unlike Grisham, though, Ray is more of the hot streak/cold streak guy as opposed to a guy who’s put it together and turned the corner.

He had three really bad outings in Colorado too which skewed his away numbers.

I love this trade although I will miss both Davies & Grisham. I saw Grisham (Clark) play in HS here in DFW. Great hitter with upside.

I’m also very excited to see what Urias can do as an everyday MLB SS.

As a side note - I’m new to this board & I need help sizing my avatar.

I kind of think the Padres got the best player in this trade. They got a pitcher who has made 111 major leagues starts with a 1.29 whip, 3.91 era and 2.5:1 k : bb ratio. He’ll probably improve upon those numbers pitching in the larger parks on the west coast. I know I’d be thrilled had the Brewers acquired a starter with those career numbers.

Can they get anything for Arcia from anyone? Even a flyer prospect?

In all honesty he wouldn't be the worst option as their utility IF/late inning defensive replacement for Hiura in the world, either. Because of that I doubt they'd just non-tender him and let Arcia go for nothing. That's also why I doubt they just trade him for peanuts.

This is my line of thinking. I think Hiura's defensive issues make Arcia a logical late-inning defensive replacement at SS with Urias sliding over to 2B. For the 2-ish million it'll cost for Arcia, I'd rather have him than a retread like Spangenberg or Saladino.

Davies frustrated the crap out of me...nibble, nibble, nibble(go to 3-0), then groove a fast(if you can call it that)ball and get tattooed. If he didn't have his control, he was useless, and that happened way too much...especially down the stretch this last year. I'm not sad to see him go, at all.

Davies has definitely been the best player in this deal through 11/27/2019. He is also the oldest, most expensive & has the least years of team control remaining of any player in the deal.

Except that isn’t what usually happened, or his career ERA wouldn’t be under 4

Can someone layout the projection rotation for 2020 now that Chase Anderson, Z. Davies & others are gone (without any more trades/ free agents signings)?? Roster Resource is suggesting Freddy Peralta is in the rotation.

I would be interested to see the various thoughts/ opinions..

Are you sure that you read DAVIES on the back of the pitcher you were watching? Because this really isn't true at all.

You didn't like Davies because he didn't throw 98 MPH heat. Just admit it.

No ... because it's Nov. 27. It would be an absolutely useless exercise. Right now the only sure thing for a rotation spot is Woodruff, with Lauer and Houser likely close to sure things. I don't think Freddy sniffs the rotation this year after everything is said and done.

Woodruff/Houser/Lauer would be the only sure bets at this point, I'd imagine.

Suter & Peralta would seem like the best options currently on the 40 man to fill out the last two spots unless you like any of Burnes, Faria, Guerra/Guerra, Nelson or Supak better.

The more I read on Urias, the more I LOVE this deal. Seems like a try-hard type guy who is great in the clubhouse. His teammates in SD adored him. Fun personality. He should be a great fit with the Brewers.

He better not laugh when he is struggling.

:laughing Perfect post.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
