Davies and Grisham to San Diego, Urias and Lauer to the Brewers

Another unexplored angle here: what if the Brewers don't think Hiura can stick at 2nd? Is Urias part of their 2B plans? Are they considering a Hiura move to 1st (despite their messaging at the end of the year)? Corner OF? Trade?

Fire up the conjecture machine!

Highly doubtful, Hiura’s value is 2nd. Definitely not 1B

Long time follower and I rarely post --- but I really think that the Brewers target Nicholas Castellanos now.

While his glove isn't great he can adequately play each corner OF spot and maybe in a pinch play 3B or 1B. He also would provide them a nice middle of the order righty bat.

I've been hoping for this for quite awhile. Love the bat in the middle of the order. Would allow Braun some starts at 1b (if that's the plan) and I don't think he's going to get THAT much on the market.

love this trade - I've been a proponent for the Brewers trying to deal Davies while he still had some value, and it probably took including him with Grisham to land Urias. Urias gives them a legit SS option who has positional flexibility to also play 2B if Hiura needs a day off or is potentially DH-ing during interleague games in an AL park, also. The lefty arm gives them some rotation/staff flexibility...although it does stink Pomeranz appears to be on the verge of signing elsewhere.

There's the possibility that Urias opens 2020 in the minors as well, especially if Arcia is still with the organization on Opening Day...I'm guessing the Brewers see Urias as their utility IF and potentially everyday SS if his bat comes around following initial scuffles during his first 225 MLB at bats. The talent is there for him to be a much better hitter than Arcia.

Though this trade is an upgrade for the Brewers(and yes it's still early), this does NOTHING to fill the hole left by Grandal's bat leaving. Urias might be a slight upgrade over Arcia(potential for more in the future), but they still need to get another big bat or two(I still love the Castellanos idea above and also one I had expressed) and also still need a HUGE rotation upgrade. For now, I'm pleased but still don't like the lineup...yet. Let's see what the rest of the off season brings

FWIW: The Padres beat writer seems to think there may be cash or another PTBNL involved..

"The Padres needed outfield and starting pitching. They just landed Trent Grisham and Zach Davies from Milwaukee, sources said. The cost: Luis Urías and Eric Lauer. Might be cash/ptbnl involved as well. It's an upside-for-upside swap. The Padres like Grisham'd. " AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell)

Absolutely love this trade! Brewers also save roughly $4 million more now, and depending on what happens with Arcia, it could be almost $7 million saved. We traded a mid rotation pitcher with 2 years of control left and a mostly minor leaguer that has struggled his entire career other than for a couple months last season for a back of the rotation arm that has some upside with I believe 5 years of control and a SS prospect that was ranked 16th in MLB prior to last year that has 6 years of control. Stearns absolutely fleeced the Padres on this trade!

I think Arcia will be moved now and that something big is still on the horizon. Big time third baseman, starting pitcher, or possibly outfielder is all in play right now. Heck, a couple might be coming! Anthony Rendon or Stephen Strasburg anyone!? Man what an exciting move this was!!

Love the enthusiasm but we saved $7 million, not $60 million.

This pushes our available payroll to between $45-$50 million below last year’s as it sits already. Not including possible trades or non-tenders of Shaw, Arcia, Guerra among others.

Anyway, love the trade. This is what has to be done to create an extended window beyond the three years it looked like we had. Woodruff, Hader, Lauer, Urias, and Hiura are all part of making that possible. This is one of those moves that helps us now and in the future.

I think Urias will be at SS and Arcia is gone. Save the money there and receive the same production as Arcia at the absolute worst, but with a ton of upside and making the minimum. Urias’ ceiling is extremely high.

Also, our rotation of Woodruff, Houser, and Lauer as it sits is going to see some improvement. If they go cheap there, they absolutely are making a run for a big time bat or two. If they continue to have cheaper options for their everyday bats, they will spend a ton on the rotation. They still have holes at first or outfield (depending on Braun‘s situation) and third and that’s it. Arguably 5 or 6 of the 8 spots in the field not including pitcher are most likely set. The money will be spent somewhere. With all of these moves gaining cheap young talent, I have to believe it’ll be spent in one of those areas. The catching market does not have a high value guy anymore. Honestly this is is just making me way more excited to think we are going to make a real play for one of the top starting pitchers on the market and/or make a serious run at someone like Rendon.

I hear you, was just giving you a hard time. I agree that this trade is a good indicator that the Brewers will make a big splash in the FA market. For your hypothetical, I think subbing out Strasburg and putting in someone like Wheeler is actually viable now. TOR potential arm and Rendon at 3b would make this a very formidable team.

It would have been a joke to propose a Grisham for Urias trade a year ago so even with that playoff mishap I have to give Grisham a ton of credit for increasing his value so much in a short span. Hopefully Ray can reward Stearns and the Brewers as well.

At the age of 22, last year in MLB with the Padres, Urias hit .355 with a .509 SLG (.892 OPS) vs LHP.

Now granted that is a very small sample (57 AB’s) and he struggled mightily vs RHP, but to me it gives insight that his bat might be a little more MLB ready than is being reported...

I agree! Rendon and Wheeler would be a fantastic offseason. I was hoping a big right handed bat would be brought in to protect Yelich and who better to add than Rendon? Maybe find a way to add a guy like Avisail Garcia or Nicholas Castellanos depending on available funds and they could have a nasty lineup!

Rendon? And Wheeler?

You guys are setting yourselves up for some big disappointment.

Not saying its going to happen. I actually don't think its going to happen. Just saying its viable.

Rendon is expected to get $30mil+ and Wheeler about $20mil.

I don't think that is even remotely possible for us.

My goodness! On paper this is the most lopsided trade in the Brewers favor that I can remember going through. Not going to read the comments because I'm sure they're 50% people complaining about trading future Cy Young Zach Davies :laughing :laughing

Welcome, Luis Urias!!!
