That seems about what I expected, basically paying him Rizzo money for 80% of Rizzo production and a microscopic fraction of his clubhouse presence.

Seems like a lot for him, I don't know if he is going to age real well. Maybe playing a majority of games at DH by year 2 or 3 so maybe Grandal does get more play at 1B down the road.

Seems like a $10M or so overpay, but hey, both sides seem to really appreciate it other. Power to Jose. He's been a good player, and everyone raves about his leadership. Seems like a decent guy.

He accepted their QO so really it’s 32 million for two extra years. Career OPS of .862 and averages 33 homers per year.

Old time stat or no, the guy's been a run producer with not a lot around him and he's coming off a 123 RBI season at age 32 and he played 159 games. In fact in four of his six seasons he's had at least 154 games played in all of those he's driven in 100+. Batting behind Grandal who's always on base? He might drive in 135.

RBIs get written off because they are largely opportunity dependent, but certain hitters are better at converting those opportunities than others & Abreu is quite possibly thee best at it.

 

Since his debut in 2014, 133 batters have hit with at least 1,500 runners on base. Jose's RBI% of 18.47 ranks second behind only Nolan Arenado (19.22%). The only other guys over 18% are Daniel Murphy (18.37) & Charlie Blackmon (18.11).
