Roster as of 11/14

There are a ton of holes in this roster. Mark A. is going to have to open the check book. A stud SP would give Milwaukee a good rotation.

SP

1. Woodruff (stud)

2. ?

3. Houser (potential stud)

4. Davies (tender, no better options)

5. Burnes/Peralta (too young to give up on)

RP

Suter (swing man/ long relief)

Claudio (L) (don't overwork him)

J. Guerra (hopefully the velocity stays up)

D. Williams (low leverage situations)

Burnes/ Peralta ( too young to give up on)

Hader (don't overwork him)

?

?

C- Pina (better off as #2)

1B- Braun (I see it happening)

2B- Huira (defense will improve)

SS- Arcia (still fairly young)

3B- ?

LF- Yelich (less wear and tear)

CF- Cain (solid)

RF-Grisham (is he an everyday player?)

Bench

C- Nottingham ( a lot to prove)

OF- Gamel ( no better options)

1B/3B- Shaw (not sure why)

2B/SS- ?

26 Man: Faria, D. Guerra, T. Williams, Yardley, Black

IR: Wahl, Knebel, Nelson

Free Agents to Consider

1.) Moose- 2/22 million, answers 3B issue. Still leaves lots of holes.

2.) Kendrik- 2/13 million, answers multiple issues (1B, 2B, 3B)

3.) Gregorious- 3/42 million, bye- bye Arcia

4.) Lyles- 1/6 million, steps into the rotation, not a #2

5.) Betances- 1/7 million, solves RHP late inning relief

6.) Nova- 1/6, steps into the rotation

7.) Holt- 1/6, solves multiple issues. Could be option #1a. behind Moose?

I think either Suter or Peralta end up in the rotation at the start of the year. No way Burnes makes the roster opening day. I look for them to bring back Jay Jackson on a very modest deal to flesh out the pen and I can't believe your FA list doesn't contain Pomeranz who I believe might be first on their list of to-do's.

According to Roster Resource, Faria, D. Guerra, T. Williams and Black are all out of options.

Have to think Black will be on the opening day roster unless he bombs in spring training.

I think with Knebel and Wahl the pen will be ok .

but a quality starter is needed

Of course I'd love to see Wahl come in healthy and be a positively impactful bullpen piece, but he was never exactly MLB-proven (14 career MLB games, 13 innings) before he was injured. I'm very intrigued by his promise but I didn't think he was a roster "gimme" last year even before the injury, and I don't think we can count on him any more now than we could Nelson this time last year.

If what you're saying is that because of some bullpen possibilities already on-hand -- esp. who could potentially be good & significant pieces of the relief equation -- that the Brewers should focus more efforts on acquiring a quality SP, I agree fully.

I'm just wary of putting too many eggs in the baskets of Knebel & especially Wahl before we know they'll be able to contribute well (Knebel after TJ, Wahl at all). Not that I'm gun-shy because of it, but how the sum of the Woodruff/Burnes/Peralta rotation plan turned out is a fair reminder that even seemingly sure things aren't sure things until they've actually proven to be sure things.

I agree it's probably unlikely, but you can't exactly rule out a guy with that much arm talent...that had an awful year for unexplainable reasons. For years, guys with his stuff have gotten away with being effectively wild in the zone. Yet all of a sudden Burnes is getting hammered left and right. My guess is he goes into the offseason planning to add some movement to his heater, deception to his delivery, improve his curve or change...he'll do at least one thing to improve.
