Injured list (IL) changes - Pitchers subject to 15 day IL again, hitters to remain at 10 days

Good. I dont like Pitchers with a 10day IL as it was abused by a number of teams. (Dodgers looking at you) when a SP has a skip coming up and magically one goes down for 10days. All good with the 10day for position players. I'd even take a 7day designation(Braun looking at you) with a 15day. Put that the 1st 7day a player can be called up to the "26" man. A 2nd or more 7day designation, the team cannot. You need to use the 15day. But hey it is how it is.

The shorter IL kept players fresher and healthier and gave opportunities to guys who would not have gotten it otherwise, ever if it was just for a handful of innings. Of all the changes that have been made the last few years this is just about the only one that isn't totally stupid so of course it's going to be the only one that's undone.

I agree with jerichoholicninja. In a sport where they play almost every day there needs to be a way to give guys with minor injuries a way to rest without missing much time. Either players play through it and never actually heal or the team is forced to play a man short on a fairly regular basis. I just see this as a way to make some minor injuries major ones or teams will be playing inferior baseball.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

100% agree with the last two posters. I liked the 10 day DL, and find it hard to believe that they are taking it away so soon.

The 10 day IL was being abused by some clubs regarding pitcher movement (LA Dodgers for example) so pushing back to 15 days for pitchers legitimizes it.

The 10 day still remains for position player usage at this point...

I don't understand why there is even a minimum stay anyway, besides pitchers of course.

You could essentially operate with a full 40 man roster there wasn't one. You could plan your player's days off, IL them for some ailment and have reinforcements available if you wanted them.

But would teams actually do that? Maybe for some players I guess, but if your planning on giving yelich a day off, does the team want him on the bench as a just in case guy or are they going to call up Corey ray to sit on the bench for the day?

My point is I dont see a reason why we have to make a decision on a guy who gets banged up and wont play for a day or 3. Pitchers are obvious, but position players less so. I just feel like teams should have the option of replacing someone who's legit banged up. Just look at braun. How many times has he been put in limbo. Sometimes he ends up being ILd anyway and sometimes it does end up being just a few days. It kinda goes back to what thurson said about guys playing through injuries.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

I agree with you, but there probably does need to be some kind of guideline.

They could simplify things by just doing similar to what the NFL does. Have a permanent 28 man roster year round and on game day the manager designates 21 as "active." Then just have a single 30 day IL or whatever for long-term injuries that removes a player from the 40.

Agree here. This isn't just the MLB throwing darts at the wall making rules, there was unfortunately abuse. The Brewers were somewhat a culprit as well.

They were? I felt like they didn't take advantage of the 10 day IL nearly enough if anything.

I can't give you specific examples but it does feel like they shuttled the bottom of their bullpen quite a bit with "shoulder tightness" the past few years, even with the 15-day IL. It has become somewhat standard practice in the majors but it felt like the Brewers participated quite a bit as a bullpen ball team.

The Brewers took advantage of options to shuttle the backend of the bullpen but I don’t really recall them using the IL for that to the point they were abusing it.

If anything, like adam said, it seems like the Brewers wouldn’t put a player on the IL hoping it would be a 2-3 day thing and end up playing short handed for a week when the should have just put them on the IL.
