RHP Eric Yardley claimed off waivers from San Diego

djoctagone

eric yardley has been claimed off waivers from san diego, which is a little confusing, because on his mlb.com profile page, it says that he was released by the padres on 7 november, after being designated for assignment three days prior.

yardley spent his first time on a 40-man roster in 2019. he was optioned for less than 20 days, so he enters 2020 spring training with all three minor league options intact.

the roster is at 33.

This one I don't understand. He is a 29 year old career minor leaguer. Nothing even remotely outstanding about him. Maybe they are looking to help San Antonio.

Could be a guy they try to sneak through to the minors later on, but his numbers are really good. Interested in seeing what he's got. Brewers have gotten plenty out of guys with stuff that fans deem "not even remotely outstanding". Stearns definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt on these types.

i still don't understand how this was a claim off outright waivers. yardley was designated for assignment on 4 november. clubs have only seven days to trade, release, or attempt outright waiver assignments. that seven-day window expired earlier this week.

plus, it's stated on mlb.com that the padres released him 7 november. this should be a free agent signing a major league contract.

You know to Counsell it's all about getting Outs and not giving up many runs doing it.

Yardley ERA last season was not bad. THe Strike Out Numbers are not there but that's the resend he could be over looked

It is about getting Outs and this might be a guy to do that and maybe could be a good move to give him a shot.

60%+ ground ball rates will get you a look.

Seems like a good DP pitcher to come in relief for a SP with 1out in the inning. All those 4.1/5.1IP starts. With the new rules kicking in to complete the inning. He'd fit that mold to just need to face 1batter to get two outs.

As the season/experience wears on, maybe he proves a bigger role usage?

Or he doesnt make it through the winter meetings. Just a warm body brought in to tryout.

A high GB% pitcher can probably go two innings on less than 20 pitches. Nice way to get a lot of innings with little wear and tear on an arm.

I think CC and Stearns like having high contrast in their bullpen arms. It's tough to face Claudio or Suter in the 6th and then face Hader in the endgame. Yardley would play that role from the right side in contrast to Black, Knebel and Wahl (and Woodruff as a SP).

In other words, a guy worthy of bringing in, yet who could be replaced by stronger roster options depending on how the winter roster maneuvering unfolds.

If there's value in different looks than all high-power FB/high-K guys, then we might be onto a good bullpen piece.

This. I think the last couple of seasons have shown they want to add guys with varying velocities as well as varying arm slots.

IMO Yardley is just AAA material. He allows a lot of hits and is a contact type reliever. A mop-up type guy. The Brewers have so many better options, I don't see him making the big leagues. S.D. was desperate for pitching and let him go. No other team wanted him, even for nothing.

I would think at his velocity, batters foul off a higher amount of pitches.

This could be a good value pick-up. Not that long ago, everyone wanted pitchers who kept the ball on the ground. Now everyone wants guys with high K rates, so you can pick up groundball pitchers for nothing.

Throughout his career, 2/3 to 3/4 of the batters Yardley has faced have hit the ball on the ground. Not a bad pitcher for a HR park like Miller/AmFam.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."
