It is the Millennials part that is misleading the real cause is the demand for the trees. The article in the article actually has a better headline: Here's why your Christmas tree will cost more this year. The first is stating that Millenials are the cause for the cost of Christmas trees rising when in fact it is just the demand for the trees. It is just worded badly that is making it misleading. Changing the title to What is driving up the cost of Christmas trees? would have been better and less misleading as the article barely even touches on Millenials and it doesn't even make a link just a may be this is a reason argument.

Recently I heard my 20-year old son describe the 'okay boomer' thing to someone. And the one thing that he explained that isn't really said in this thread (at least that I saw) is that 'okay boomer' isn't just about dismissing someone older because they don't understand something.

 

It's dismissing them when they refuse to listen or believe something in spite of evidence offered.

 

It is a frustration when talking about facts and truths and ideas - and simply be ignored, put down, and dismissed.

Understood, but that can go both ways.

 

"Boomers" might be sick and tired of the younger generation telling them their thoughts and opinions just as much as the youngsters are sick of the old people's.

 

A lot of Millennials come off as holier than thou when it comes to what they think they know as fact. It's just a vicious circle in the end. lol

Well, that circle took you right back where we started. Millennials demand for real trees caused prices to go up. I mean, read the gynastics you just went through to say the same thing.

I will say it's kind of a weird article. They go out of their way to put a blame on millenials when the article could just be about the recovery of the Christmas tree industry. You would think millennials are going around burning down Christmas tree farms cause a lack of supply which increases the price with a headline like that. Instead its millennials are basically now the target demographic for Christmas trees and they are buying now that the economy is doing well enough. But I guess blaming millennials is more click baity.

The negative title is a bit weird. Why not celebrate the tree farmers increase in demand instead of, “Millennials are the reason your Christmas tree costs $5 more.”

 

Which, if you search google, some news outlets did do as it is a generic article reposted 5,000 times.

I bet if you look at the price of an artificial Christmas tree from 15 years ago to now, the price is higher too. Those darn “boomers”!! Buying all those fake trees and causing the price to rise!

 

Everything becomes more and more expensive in life. Whether that’s new vehicle prices, bills, food, you name it. It’s just how companies and businesses operate.

Maybe that article could have had a different headline or focus, but as an Xer I'm always interested in trends (big or small) going on with the younger generations.

 

For example, I noticed a trend of millennials choosing to live where they want and find a job there. This was before there were articles written about it, and was a known "thing." As opposed to previous generations where you would climb the ladder and move wherever that would take you.

 

FWIW, we're inconsistent Christmas tree people. We have an artificial, but randomly will get a real tree some years if we (she) feels like it.

I'm a Boomer...born in 1962. I never considered myself one, since I'm pretty much at the end of the generation and I didn't have any older siblings who were into the heart of the 60s culture. But my birth year is what it is, so I'm a boomer.

 

I'm fine with the pejorative being directed at us, though, since the world is a different place for young people than it was for me. The economy, housing, employment, education...all of those institutions have changed radically, and I need a reminder of that every so often.
