Mystery candidate for #Mets’ managerial opening is #Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy, sources tell The Athletic. Has had multiple interviews with club.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports that the Mets are "taking a really long look" at Eduardo Perez and Tim Bogar in their search for a new manager.

Martino says that Carlos Beltran, Derek Shelton and Luis Rojas are still "technically" in the mix, too, but it sounds like this might be a two-horse race between Perez and Bogar. The Mets have not yet made a decision on who will replace Mickey Callaway, per Martino.

[sarcasm]Why isn’t Derek Johnson getting looks?!?[/sarcasm]
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Pat Murphy isn’t ever talked about, but I think he is a big part of the Brewers and as a side kick to Counsell. You can see Counsell heavily talks to Murphy on in game decisions and almost seems as though Murphy’s thoughts have a big barring on what Counsell does. Of course that is just by what is shown on TV, but I don’t think Murphy just fiddles his thumbs all game...he is apart of a lot more than a typical bench coach.

Now he's not good.... boy this board can flip on a guy.

It isn't that he isn't good. He's a fine pitching coach. He was put on a extremely lofty pedestal last year, though, and when he left to go to the Reds, more than a few posters used it as an excuse to attack the team's front office while predicting doom and gloom for the Brewers' 2019 pitching staff. As we know now, while the there were some bumps in the road pitching-wise, Johnson's perceived value, and coincidently Hook's lack of perceived value, was grandly overinflated.

If he does get the job I’d love to see Loretta replace him.

I was thinking the same thing. Heard Loretta on Chicago radio a few weeks ago around the time he was being interviewed for Cubs manager job. He's astute, articulate and knows baseball inside and out. Glad the Cubs didn't hire him.

Isn’t he still under contract with the Cubs as their bench coach? I know he interviewed for their HC job and one or two others (Padres and maybe Pirates I think).

yes he is, but i made this comment based on the assumption that Ross would want to bring in him own coaches. I don't think he has any past history with Loretta. Managers typically have atleast their bench coach be someone they are very familiar with. Plus as a manager with no coaching experience, i would assume he would want someone with managing experience, just like was CC did.

We do? I thought he elevated the Reds pitching quite a bit and the Brewers, particularly some of their young guys were pretty disappointing.

This is another time, how do people accurately evaluate pitching/hitting coaches? You're stating it as fact that Johnson's value was inflated. Based on what?

The Reds pitching staff got elevated because they brought in a ton of replacements.

They got Castillo who pitched about the same overall as he had in his career to this point. DeSclafani gave them 10 more starts and was healthier this year which probably helped his production. Tyler Mahle was still bad. They replaced Matt Harvey, Sal Romano and Homer Bailey's 69 starts with 62 starts from Sonny Gray, Trevor Bauer and Tanner Roark.

There's no huge jumps in their relief staff either.

Based basically on the reaction of pure dread from a few here when he jumped ship for the Reds last year. For the most part the Brewers pitching ended up being similar overall to what they did in 2018.

This is pretty spot on. I know ERA is not the best judge but the Reds finished less than a quarter run better in ERA despite having a pretty clear talent advantage in the starting rotation. The Reds pitching stumbled pretty good in the second half despite making a perceived talent jump form Roark to Bauer. Bauer was horrible so I guess the magic didn't work on him. All of which appears to fly in the face of the pretty constant drum beat on this board that DJ was a miracle worker.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave
