Josh Hader NL relief pitcher of the year

Hader bested Yates in K/9, H/9, and WHIP. They were pretty close in BB/9 (2.4 vs 1.9). ERA, ERA+, and FIP Yates has the clear advantage. Hader's HR/9 was unsustainable high and Yates was unsustainably low. Career wise, they are virtually the same allowing homeruns but Kirby has pitched more in HR suppressing parks. Point is neither was clearly better than the other, unless you're a Brewer fan with bad memories of the last few games of the year.

Yates had 41 saves and 3 blown saves. Hader had 37 saves and 7 blown saves.

Hader allowed 15 homers in 75.2 IP, Yates allowed 3 HR in 60.2 IP.

Hader's FIP was 3.10, Yates' was 1.30.

I think they got this one wrong, and not by a little.

Not what the Brewers wanted before arbitration numbers are given... his price just went up a couple million.

Seven blown saves? 15 HRs? Best reliever, no way. I could get behind a top 5 reliever, maybe. Like someone else said, got this one waaay wrong.

#1 Why is everyone talking about saves and blown saves? Guys it is 2019 not 2009. Y’all suddenly jumping on the meaningless stats big time. Surprised wins wasn’t mentioned at this rate.

#2 Yates was definitely the best reliever in the NL, but Hader was definitely still up there.

The new thing is to blast all stats that were used before 2017.

All stats that don't require a college education to cypher are now meaningless. You guys must not have gotten that memo.

Yates was incredible and if he had won he would have been deserving.

I think the argument for Hader over Yates is the volume. Hader threw 15 more innings and 37 more strike outs. Hader threw 15 more innings that Yates with only 1 additional appearance.

Because Hader pitched for a good team. Yates pitched for a crap team. More pressure and higher leverage pitching for a good team. The Padres suck.

My argument against that is that it wasn't "the best relief pitcher on a good team" award.

MVP.... it still matters how well your team does. CY Young and other awards not so much...

Unfortunately the award won't help his trade value...

Do you believe the Brewers will trade him this offseason?

I'm sure a team like the dodgers could use things like this to justify dealing young talent for him... being hopeful! I can see it now.... "we dealt smith, verdugo, lux and urias for the league's best reliever"

Never thought I'd say this, but a relief pitcher playing for the Milwaukee Brewers probably has a larger national audience and greater following than one playing in big market San Diego. It has to be something like that, because solely based on stats, Yates should have gotten it.
