Hernan Perez elects free agency

TURBO

It hurts guys like Perez, but doesn’t necessarily make him worthless. Before a guy like Perez was an obvious #25 guy, everyone needed someone like him. Now you could have two utility guys. One that can play the left side and one that can play the right side (or corner and middle). That being said I suspect many teams may want to carry a bat that is totally worthless defensively (think Aguilar types) or as someone else mentioned a premier defensive guy (maybe speedy too) that is completely worthless with the bat. Than you would still want a Perez who can play a more meaningful role in a daily basis.

It basically just takes his some of his opportunities away, but teams will still want super utility guys. I doubt it dramatically changes the super utility landscape.

Has to be a 13 pitcher, 13 position player split. With 13 pitchers, 12 position players kinda the new normal most teams 26th spot will be an additional position player.

Thanks, I completely missed that part of the rule. In that case, position versatility is clearly lessened. If you were already carrying 13 pitchers, as teams like the Brewers were, then the added spot having to be a position player means less use for players like Perez. You can essentially replace his position coverage with 2 players and thus may as well go for better bats.

Nothing has been decided yet. Many mgrs want the 14th pitcher, especially in the AL. Some talk of 13 pitchers and guys like Lorenzen being a hybrid. Then there's the question of what makes a hybrid. A lot yet to be determined. The new 15 day minimum demotion may play a role in the decision too.

Hernan was one of my favorite players. I liked his versatility and that he parlayed his status as a waiver claim into a decent 3.5 year run. But as the team is now a pennant contender, time for an upgrade.

i haven't seen anything making the 13 pitcher limit official. i know that it's been recommended, but i have yet to see a formal decision announced.

It would be curious if they do end up with that rule, how they classify an Ohtani / Lorenzen/ Kieschnick or if they wouldn't be allowed to pitch if there were already 13 other pitchers on the active roster.

Well if they don't cap the number of pitchers, I'd be shocked, stunned, and flabbergasted if the Brewers don't carry 14 of them.
