Catcher Position for 2020

Well, this offseason is looking like a disaster...

If we get to February and are still looking at a bottom of the order of Shaw, Pina, Arcia, P, I’ll agree with you. There’s been like 2 big name guys that have signed contracts. Heck, tomorrow we could sign Donaldson and the “entire offseason” looks different. There will be key guys brought in over the next few months.

I'd rather shoot for the stars and sign Rendon if we are out on Moose...

I do NOT, under any circumstance, want Shaw as a starting infielder on opening day.

So is it that you are ignoring his 2017-18 numbers, or is it that you believe he's done?

I believe that he is too big of a risk to go into the season with any expectations of seeing 2017-18 Travis Shaw.

So I guess the answer to your question is yes, I think he is done.

Come on, man! You are certainly playing right into the thought processes of those of us who view you as a troll ...

We're looking at a significant downgrade at catcher, and we still have gaping holes at shortstop, first base, and third base. There's no comparable bat on the market to Grandal.

While it wouldn't be unprecedented, Shaw is only 29 years old. I think it would be prudent to at least bring him back to Spring Training and try to determine if there was some sort of underlying reason for his decline. I agree, though, that if they do bring him back and go into the season expecting him to play a prominent role, it would be best to have a Plan B locked and loaded.

Losing Grandal is a huge lose, but obviously it's still early in the offseason and we saved 18 mil and have lots of holes to fix.

Based off of mlbtradrumors, didi will sign a deal worth an average of 14 mil (I feel that's high for him and he wont get 3 years) and Travis D,naud for an average of 7 mil. So, you're telling me we can aquire a solid catcher and a pretty good ss for not much more than Grandal signed.

Didi has big time left handed power and plays good defense. Since he's a left handed hitter, it's very possible he can hit 30 homeruns this year if half his games at miller park. D'naud has shown that if he stays healthy, he can be productive. You're not asking him to play 140 games at catcher, but maybe 100 games from him and 62 from pina. That combo has a chance to be really productive.

If we spent about 20 mil to get those 2 (give or take a few mil) that leaves us with about 20 mil left. That's enough to sign moose and and to make an okay pitching upgrade. But this isn't counting players being non-tendered and if our payroll is the same as last years, which I actually think it'll be more.

Sorry for the long post. Losing Grandal sucks, but lets try to be somewhat optimistic. Lots of good Free agents out there and who knows what Mark and David have up their sleeves. They want to win and I don't think they want to wast the last 3 years of Yeli.

I think the only way Stearns brings back Shaw is as a backup or platoon type player. If he looks like he can regain his 2018 form it's a big win. If not let him go after spring training.

Just perused some of the prior and newer top catcher prospects. Looking for maybe a guy blocking or being blocked. The Arizona DBacks have Carson Kelly now who played well last season. And then there is a one Daulton Varsho. From WI that is projected to make the Majors in 2020. Let's make a deal! I'll return to this later but go ahead. Discuss.

I am going to go with Alex Avila in a platoon with Pina. Up until this year, Pina was a much better hitter against LHP, so a lefty platoon partner makes sense.

Avila is a very low BA (.207) with a high whiff rate (32%). He walked a lot against RH pitching, but the high strikeout rate and very low BA is a problem with a team that already whiffs at an extremely high rate.

I know Arizona is very high on Daulton and the price would be expensive. They are preparing him for the outfield as well so he may not be that blocked in Arizona.

I read that after my too. Still. Maybe you can part with Burnes and Nottingham for him. Which Id of thought impossible to trade Corbin. SP/RP that was in the top 50 rankings on a down year. A fix could open a pot of gold in that return. Maybe this kind of move doesnt happen til late spring. Two to maybe target nonetheless.

Sign Vogt and have him and Pina form a soft platoon for cheap

Vogt lacks so much behind the plate. They have to have a better upgrade than Vogt.

But Vogt is an ex-Brewer, so that means we have to consider him, we just have to...

What does that even have to do with anything?

He's coming off a strong year in San Fran, and could platoon with Pina. The guy can hit and yeah he sucks defensively but teams don't run as much as they used to anyway.

Teams don't run anymore. Doesn't matter who's behind the plate. Per B-R, Vogt was a -.01 dwar player in 2019, and a 1.2 WAR player overall. They could do a lot worse. He might be the best catching bat still out there.

Any talk about Francisco Cervelli? He definitely comes with a risk factor because of the concussion issues but could be an interesting option to pair with Pina. I wouldn't bet on him finding his 2018 form where he was elevating the ball considerably more against right handed pitching and putting up great numbers, but it could be a nice cheap upgrade that will allow us to spend more in other places.

To be honest, the thought of that rubber arm just about makes me sick. It may be true that teams don't run like they used to, but if they want to, against a lame arm like his, they can, and will...
