John Means business

Means, John LHP- Oriole starter at 26 yrs old, 3.60 ERA with a 1.135 WHiP, .234 BAA, 2.2 BB/9, 7.03 K/9

A lefty that can deal innings and less proven than Matthew Boyd in Det.

Not that they would, but since BAL needs everything except RF...maybe...

what would it take to get this deal done?

an extra starter means that we could not have to rely on JNelson, can let Chase's $$$ walk/get traded, not have to rely on Burnes, Faria, etc to figure it out in April, and it would be one less free agent to overpay.

What gets it done?

What would BAL expect back?

I think the biggest problem lies with finding an answer to these two questions. Means is among the top 2-3 assets in the entire Orioles organization. If the Orioles were willing to listen to offers there are several teams that are much better positioned to have the prospect talent to entice Baltimore.

I think any trade offer from the Brewers would have to start with Turang plus at least two of Lutz, Small, Feliciano, Abreu, Ashby. Even at that I am not sure Turang as a headliner would excite the Orioles to the point of being willing to move a LH starter they have under control for 5 more seasons.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I don't think he's all that valuable to the Orioles. Not only did he regress back to what he is (a back-end rotation MLB starter) as the season went by, but he doesn't line up that well with their window, anyways. Sure, he'll have 2-3 years of control left when the Orioles hope to be contending in 2022 or so, but it's possible that he fades by then anyways.

If someone wanted to give up a future asset for Means, I bet they'd take it. Teams will want him as a decent MLB pitcher with upside but I don't think there is a line of teams offering high end prospects.

Means' BABIP was extremely low and he had a relatively high LOB%. He's got a nice changeup to stick in the league, but it's possible that he's up to a 4.50-5 ERA next year and completely forgotten about. If Stearns thinks he has something to work with then I'll trust it but otherwise I'd pass unless he's given away nearly for free.
