I think they will spend about half that $36.5M for the opening day roster to give them a bit more flexibility in July.

Count me as someone who has generally liked the moves they have made so far, especially Urias/Lauer, Narvaez and Anderson. What pains me is the fact that we easily have enough money to spend on an elite bat/D guy like Donaldson that for me, could really push this team over the top, and we know it won't happen. It's how Stearns operates, and that's certainly not a bad thing. Its just, especially with a guy like Donaldson who is rumored to be open to a contract that lines up perfectly with our window, and fills a hole we desperately need with elite production, I wish they would take the risk.

We know the Brewers aren't going to be players for top free agents and they still lack players to fill the corner infield positions. I could see them signing:

Wilmer Flores- 28 yrs old. Since 2016 he's batted .278/.325/.462. 1294 at bats but only 175 Ks.

Starlin Castro-30 years old. Can play 2B, 3B, SS. Career numbers of .280/.319/.414, averages 15+ HR per 162.

Eric Thames--if he's willing to return after a paycut

Daniel Hudson-32 years old. Solid career numbers, still averaged over 95 mph on his fastball last year

None of these players would break the bank, all would like sign one or two year deals, and all feature things the Brewers front office values: power, defensive versatility, velocity.

Depending on the plan with Urias, they could have an infield look of:

C: Navarro/Pina

1B: Thames/Flores

2B: Hiura

SS: Arcia

3B: Castro/Flores

In this scenario Flores would play 1B against left handed pitching against whom he has very good career numbers, against RH pitching he and Castro would split time at 3B as well as back up the other infield positions. While there would be no big 30+ homer bat like Moustakas, excepting Arcia all of them should hit 20+ homeruns and bat around .270 or better. Additionally, Flores doesn't strike out much at all, and Castro struck out only once every 5.72 at bats in 2019 which is superior ratio to anyone on the 2019 Brewers.

Next, out of the pen they would potentially have nice combinations of players who throw multiple innings: Peralta, Suter, Faria, Hader as well as a stable of pitchers who's fastball averages 95 MPH or better Wahl (96.1), Black (98.3), Hudson (96.4), Hader (95.9) and Knebel (97.4).

I wouldn't rule out bringing back Jimmy Nelson on some sort of incentive laden deal either.

If he is looking for a 4-year/$100M deal, I think that takes the Brewers out as the Nats seem to be willing to go there. If he was in the 2 to 3-year window, I think the Brewers might look to go down that road. Just my two cents.

I think youre looking for Narvaez at catcher. Also, there is about a 0% chance Arcia starts at SS over Urias. Urias in his very short stint in the MLB did not hit very well, but still hit much better than Arcia. Sure there is a possibility that Urias turns out to be unplayable at SS due to defense (though scouts didnt believe his D to be that poor), but if that happens, we are in trouble.

Without a new 3B, we are currently looking at Urias starting at 3B and Arcia at SS.

Things will change I'm sure, but 0% chance is a risky bet.

That is why I wrote depending on the plan for Urias. It's possible he breaks camp going to AAA. It's also possible that he doesn't hit for enough power to be an everyday major leaguer. Too early to tell, and to unpredictable to not have a contingency plan and let Urias's play force the issue.

At this point in the offseason, I would like to see the Brewers do the following:

*Re-sign Thames to a 2 year $9million deal. Thames had a $7.5m option that was bought out for $1m. Brewers bring him back at essentially $5.5m (buyout + new $4.5m salary). Braun and Thames split 1B at 60/40 timeshare.

*Brewers trade Corey Knebel & Lucas Erceg to Los Angeles for Corey Seager and Justin Turner. Instead of the Brewers trading Hader, they trade another elite arm in Knebel (when healthy) and Dodgers take the long view for their new pen (Treinen, Knebel & Jansen). Brewers fill 3B (for 2020) in Turner and SS (for 2020) in Seager, with eyes on Seager shifting to 3rd in 2021. Dodgers clear payroll of Turner in order to sign Donaldson or trade for Kris Bryant and start Lux at SS.

Brewers lineup:

1. Cain

2. Yelich

3. Turner

4. Seager

5. Hiura

6. Garcia

7. Braun/Thames

8. Narvaez

Galaxy Brain maneuver:

SFG gets

-OF Corey Ray [from MIL]

-RHP Zack Brown [from MIL]

SEA gets

-RHP Reyes Moronta (injured) [from SFG]

-OF Mike Yazstemski [from SFG]

-LHP Aaron Ashby [from MIL]

MIL gets

-1B Brandon Belt [from SFG] ($16M salary in 2020)

-3B Kyle Seager [from SEA] ($19M salary in 2020)

-LHP Marco Gonzales [from SEA] ($1M salary in 2020)

-$5M salary relief [from SEA]

-Waiver of Seager's 2022 vesting option

MIL signs

-UTIL Asdrubal Cabrera for 2 years/$10M

Can maximize defense when our soft-tossers (Gonzales, Anderson) are starting.

2017-19 UZR/150:

C - Pina (n/a)

1B - Belt (+6.9)

2B - Urias (+8.0)

SS - Arcia (-1.1)

3B - Seager (+6.5)

LF - Yelich (+4.7 career)

CF - Cain (+7.6)

RF - Garcia (+0.5)

Can maximize offense when necessary.

2017-19 vs RHP:

C - Narvaez (.347 wOBA)

1B - Belt (.346 wOBA)

2B - Hiura (.418 wOBA)

SS - Urias (censored!)*

3B - Cabrera (.333 wOBA)

LF - Yelich (.413 wOBA)

CF - Cain (.327 wOBA)

RF - Garcia (.332 wOBA)

2017-19 vs LHP

1B - Braun (.369 wOBA)

2B - Cabrera (.335 wOBA)

SS - Urias (.404 wOBA)

3B - Seager (.335 wOBA)

LF - Yelich (.373 wOBA)

CF - Cain (.362 wOBA)

RF - Garcia (.368 wOBA)

* - Urias and Hiura both have weird platoon splits in small career sample sizes, they are both everyday players in reality. These numbers to not suggest actual platoons just best available stats.

2019 performance of rotation:

RHP Woodruff (3.3 fWAR, 21 GS)

LHP Gonzales (3.7 fWAR, 34 GS)

RHP Lindblom (n/a)

LHP Anderson (2.0 fWAR, 31 GS)

LHP Lauer (2.3 fWAR, 29 GS)

RHP Houser (1.1 fWAR, 18 GS)

If we assume 2.0 fWAR for Lindblom in 29 GS, that would have given our starters 14.4 fWAR, good for 10th in MLB.

I like your Thames idea, as I've been thinking the same thing - would be a great platoon option with Braun at 1B.

However, I cannot imagine the Dodgers ever doing that trade for Knebel. Nobody knows how healthy Knebel will be this season, and it's already being reported that he likely won't be back until May sometime (and that might be the earliest). And, even a healthy Knebel wouldn't be able to bring back Turner and Seager. In fact, I doubt a healthy Knebel could even bring back one of those guys. Erceg is basically a non-prospect at this point - so adding him into the deal isn't going to help at all.

Yeah that isn’t even close for the Dodgers. You’d have to add Urias to start negotiations.

I do like the idea of getting Turner or Seager If the dodgers get someone like Lindor though

The Dodgers proposal is mostly about clearing their payroll to be able to sign Donaldson or acquire Bryant. Obviously without having inside knowledge of front offices and how they operate, the Brewers taking on the entire salary of Turner and Seager may enable them to acquire them without adding a Urias type prospect/player.

IMO the chances of Urias starting at 3B are about the same chances as the Brewers had at signing Cole. Zero. Urias was brought in to play SS. Stearns will pickup a low cost 3B or a platoon like he'll have at 1B.

Would love to target those two dodgers. Unfortunately, we are not getting them for even close to that trade, even with taking on their salaries. Switch out Erceg for Turang and you've got a start.

I think you forgot Houser. But, in general I would be absolutely on board with your plan here. I don't know why - but I still have this gut feeling that we've got at least one "big" move coming this offseason. Signing Ryu at that price would certainly qualify for that. I know it's not in DS's MO to spend a lot on a SP, so I'm guessing he'll never do that, but I guess we can dream.

No I didn't forget Houser. He will be first man up because there is some definite injury risk with that. Edit: I think Houser doesn't have options left so he would need to go to the pen or make him the 5th starter and send Lauer to the minors.

I really like how the offense is starting to look. I do think we still lack that big bat to protect Yelich, but we should be a much more consistent offense this season. And it’ll be with less homers (something we aren’t used to).

I think a reunion with Thames is in the best interest of the Brewers to get that third lefty bat in the lineup when facing righties. I would bring back Thames and sign one of Asdrubal Cabrera (who is a switch hitter) or Wilmer Flores.

Against Righties

1B Thames (L)

LF Yelich (L)

2B Hiura ®

Regardless of who we are facing, we would have a pretty impressive looking lineup. I think Urias is going to open some eyes this year with a .350+ OBP and become our SS and eventual leadoff hitter of the future. When you’re talking about having guys like Braun, Flores, or Urias down in the 7 or 8 hole, you have an impressive lineup. We wouldn’t have any black holes.

I really like the structure of our team as it currently sits, but bringing back Thames and signing one of Flores or Cabrera would really give our roster a nice construction.

The financials of non-tendering Thames cloud the potential salary that would go with signing him at a reasonable/realistic price -- and what would he actually sign for? -- but I sure do like him as a 1B for our present roster mix. Then we'd only have a 3B question in terms of position players, plus another pitcher or two.

Of course we could've just picked up Thames' option in the first place, but that's water over the dam long ago.

I'm curious what additional potential trades Stearns might have on his plate that he's considering.

Either I’m drinking the spiked Xmas eggnog or I may be onto something here.

To me, all of these moves so far are setting up for something big. It feels exactly like years past when the offseasons would start slow for us and everyone freaks out...only to have 1-2 major announcements come in January.

This offseason is gearing up for that as well.

I feel Corey Ray, Hader are as good as gone. We are just having to wait for the announcement.

I feel it. I feel it in every inch of my bones.

I like your sign Ryu idea.

For the trade with Mets, I much prefer to try and get JD Davis than Smith. Davis can play 3B and is a better hitter than Smith. With JD Davis and Lowrie, our 3B is set for 2020.

I like your sign McHugh idea.

I much prefer to get Thames than Cron, I like the sign Thames for 2 years $9M idea by the previous poster. With Braun, Thames, Davis, our 1B is set for 2020.

Houser should definitely start the season in the major league team as a starter or reliever.

Edit: apologies I meant JD Davis.

It really would just be perfect if we could sign Donaldson and then bring back Thames. I would also try to trade Arcia for some relief pitching now that we have Sogard to split time with Urias.
