What is your 2019-2020 offseason plan for the Brewers?

Just food for thought, but I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about the Brewers’ past offseason. Is it a possibility that Stearns was receiving advice whether from team doctors, scientists, etc. and based on information gathered in December and January, felt that baseball had a decent shot of being negatively affected by Covid?

Is that a possibility as to why we saw some interesting signings and mostly 1 year deals to avoid the risk of signing someone to a long term deal and possibly wasting one or two of their prime years and then overpaying them on the backside without getting any production early on in the contract?

The trade of Davies and Grisham to bring back Lauer and Urias looks absolutely genius at this point. The Padres traded a nice haul to Milwaukee for quite possibly one year of Davies and Grisham. Teams that traded prospects to get one year of a player have to be absolutely kicking themselves right now.

Does anybody have a final tally for the Brewers’ 2020 payroll? The number I saw was $107 million (obviously before taking into account the adjusted salaries). Just trying to get a general idea of what to expect for a payroll in 2021 for when we discuss our plans for offseason moves.

I’m thinking it’ll get cut a little more and we will see it in the $95-$100 million range to start the season because of the no fans in 2020 and most likely reduced amount of fans let in to the stands in 2021. Thanks!

Some interesting points here, and certainly makes you think. I doubt though that even Stearns had any idea what was to come with this virus. If he did, then he failed miserably in pushing that up the flagpole so that the US as a country could have maybe done more to prevent this situation we ended up finding ourselves in.

Also, I'd argue that the Padres GM looks like the genius in that offseason trade. As we know, Davies could get some Cy Young votes for his performance this year, and Grisham had a really nice season in that Pads lineup. Meanwhile....man, I'm too depressed about what we saw from Urias and Lauer this season to even discuss them!

Attempt #2

Sign Ryu for 4 years/$84 million

Trade Corey Ray to the Mets for Smith and Lowrie (Mets pick up 2 million)

Sign Mchugh 2 years/$8 million

Sign Cron 1 year/$5 million

Lineup:

Cain-CF

Yelich-RF

Hiura-2B

Narvez-C

Garcia-LF

Smith-1B

Lowrie-3B

Urias-SS

P

Bench:

Pina

Braun

Arcia

Cron

Gamel

Rotation:

Ryu

Woodruff

Anderson

Lindblom

Lauer

Pen:

Knebel

Hader

Mchugh

Suter

Claudio

Black

Peralta

Wahl

Well Lowrie would have been a disaster but Smith would have been our best hitter by far so definitely worth it. Ryu would have formed one of the best 1-3s in baseball for us. Mchugh opted out so that's a nothing there. Cron at least did okay when he was able to play. I have done much worse as an armchair GM.
