2019-10-01 (NL Wild Card Game): Brewers (Woodruff) at Nationals (Scherzer) 7:08 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 4-3 -- Nationals score 3 runs in 8th inning; Heartbreaking end to 2019]

Also reminder that Suzuki is catching and he's not a very good thrower from behind the plate. Hiura/Grisham should for sure be looking to steal. Cain if he's up for it. Braun/Thames/Arcia maybe if they can get the right jump or Suzuki is struggling with his throwing at all.

Remember they did go to Hader first in Game 7 vs LAD last year. But, it was different as you still had Knebel and they still viewed JJ as good, though they shouldn't have at that point. I don't see it happening in this game.

Another reason why Knebel is so missed. I've said it a few times but I really do not like Hader closing things out with one-run leads. He is just way too suspect when it comes to the long ball. 5-2 is fine, even 4-2 because he's at least got to let a guy on, but I just do not like him when the margin for error is zero. If I had Knebel I would be bringing Hader out first without hesitation.

The big decision in that game was pulling Hader in the bottom of the 5th after 3 IP, 31 pitches. He was really dominant but we were down 2-1 and needed runs. If the game was tied I wonder if Hader would have gotten another inning or two. Of course in retrospect we didn't get any runs in the 5th and instead Cedeno came in and gave up a leadoff single and then Jeffress surrendered the knockout punch.

I remember feeling really discouraged going into the 6th when we were still losing and had already used Hader.

Good news is Cain is on the roster

Yes, but will he be able to play tonight?

They certainly wouldn't put him on the wildcard roster if they didn't think there was a strong chance he could play. They can submit a new roster for NLDS if they win today.

If they win tonight can the roster be changed for the NLDS? I was assuming the announced roster is for the entire post season...?

Teams that try inserting career starters into the middle of a wild card game to give them a few innings because their regular season bullpen is a train wreck often see that strategy backfire due to putting guys in roles they simply arent accustomed to. If scherzer is pitching well, they would be better off riding him the whole game, like what the cubs did with Arrieta in their 2015 wild card game.

This just isn't true. There is plenty of history of starting pitchers coming in, in relief, in the playoffs and dominating. Just last year Boston effectively used 4 different starters coming out of the pen in the playoffs - Price, Sale, Evoldi and Price.

I do hope you're right, though. I hope Woody hits in the first inning tonight (and the second...).

I guess I missed Boston as a wildcard team using all those starters for that 1 game...probably because they weren't in the AL wild card game.

Specific to Boston last year in using the arms you mentioned as relievers, Price was a postseason closer back with the Rays, Sale spent parts of 3 seasons with the white Sox as a late inning reliever, and eovaldi also had bullpen experience. How many relief appearances have strasburg and corbin had in their careers?

Corbin would be pitching on 2 days rest after throwing 94 pitches just 3 days ago. He might pitch in this game, but I don’t see it being any more than a couple innings at the most. Bringing him in on very short rest, in a role he’s not familiar with (pitching in a meaningful game on short rest after throwing 100 pitches) is extremely risky for the Nationals. I don’t think we will see him pitch unless it’s in extra innings since they have Scherzer and Strasburg to get through 8 and Doolittle for the 9th. If the Brewers get to one of the other two starters and get a lead, I don’t see why they would bring in Corbin anyway. I think he’s active, but very unlikely to appear in the game unless it goes into extras.

Somebody go post this in the clubhouse. Get the "Nobody believes in us" mojo going...

My friend was listening to MLB on Sirius Radio yesterday (she is not a Brewer fan but a Yankee fan) and she thought the way the announcers were just dismissing the Brewers altogether and giving the win automatically to the Nats was ridiculous and she turned it off. I told her the national media does that to the Crew all the time - except when they sang Yelich's praises. Now with no Yeli we are just an afterthought and they believe we really don't belong on the same diamond as the Nats and the rest of the teams in the playoffs.

HERE WE GO!!! Huge night for Wisconsin. I really don't know what to expect but I hope the good Brewers show up and play their A game. Nobody believes in them (outside of their fans), so I hope they show them all what they are made of. This is my Crew!

Heck, a lot of their "fans" don't even believe in them.

All it takes is a walk and a long ball. Anything can happen in these games. Braun, Hiura, Grandal, Moose, Thames can take one deep in any at bat. Anything can happen.

Big question is do you start Gamel or Grisham? I would go with Gamel for defense purposes, his experience, and since Grisham is 1-25 in his last handful of games.

No, it can be changed before every series.

Which is why I don't know why everyone is freaking out about Shaw. He's only on the roster for today. When they win, his spot will go to a pitcher and he won't be active again unless someone gets hurt.

He hits a 3 run shot to tie or win the game, he'll be on the next roster.

I don't know why that would make a difference. He's been beyond terrible all year and one AB isn't going to change that. His and Taylor's spots will go to pitchers. How either of them performs today will be irrelevant to whether or not they make the NLCS roster.

I know why everyone is freaking out about Shaw, because most people who talk about sports on the internet freak out about all sorts of things that are hardly freak out worthy.

Really hoping we can jump out to an early lead to put the pressure on the Nats right away. Even if it’s just a one or two run lead, the pressure will build after every single out and the Nats will really start to feel it in the 4th or 5th inning.
