Phillies are oddly intriguing because they play the Nationals for 4 games and then get the cupcake Marlins for 3 games. If they swept the Nationals they could easily win out and force the Nationals to beat the Indians at least 2/3. Which is no easy feat considering the Indians are in a dead heat for the AL Wild Card (and their division still I suppose).

Of course one loss to the Nationals and they are all but out.

It’s 5 not 4. Kapler is done, his teams don’t listen to his foolish talk, and have quit on him for the 2nd year in a row. But Martinez is almost as bad, so, this should actually be closer than it should be.

Washington has eight games in the next seven days as opposed to our six. They should be nice and worn out by the time we likely play next week. And Scherzer hasn't been exactly Cy Young this month. 4.94 ERA in September. If I were Martinez I would throw Strasburg at us, or maybe he'd even go bullpen game.

The way the Nats have it currently lined up (assuming they play it straight with the rotation ie normal rest) they really have their choice of Strasburg, Scherzer (assuming they don't need tow in game 162), or Sanchez. Maybe 2 of them will see innings in the WC game given how bad their bullpen has been.

the Cubs are going to sweep the pirates so of the nationals lose three out of five to the Phillies the cubs are right back in it

Same if we get swept or only win one against the reds

The cubs aren’t done yet unless they lose a game to the pirates but that is like 100-1 right now. The pirates are middle of the road SEC team right now. Let alone a pro team

The Nats are facing an uphill battle for sure. I agree with long ball, their best chance against the Brewers is to rest their starters this weekend and go with 2-3 of them in the WC game, no bullpen at all. The Brewers will almost certainly counter with a Suter-Hader combo in the later innings.

It's not certain that they will have the luxury to do much resting. If they drop too many games to the Phillies they will almost certainly have the Cubs and/or Mets within striking distance again, plus the Indians will likely have must-win games against the Nats this weekend.

The scariest thing for the Brewers is that the WC game is just one game. Last year's NLCS game 7 is a good example of what can go wrong...a hot starting pitcher and a 3-run bomb...game over.

I think the Phillies know they are done. Realmuto is not in their lineup because of a sore knee, and I have a feeling he would be playing if they were closer.

Scherzer was outstanding against the Cardinals last week, but a cheap hit and ball lost in the sun with 2 outs in the seventh inning kept the inning alive and Wieters delivered a 3 run HR.

The Nats have Corbin tonight, Scherzer in game 2 tomorrow, and Strasburg on Thursday. They are well positioned to have their best starters available for Saturday and Sunday if they need them and still have Strasburg for the WC game. If they clinch early they’ll have the option of skipping Corbin and Scherzer’s last starts or giving them short starts before the playoffs.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I would add the Mets-Marlins game to this list. If they can sweep their 4 game home series against the Marlins they could be in the running going into the weekend.

The way I look at it the Brewers have to win 3 games to clinch a playoff spot. If they don’t theybare opening the door for someone to barge in.

I think people are making this much more gloom and doom than this has to be. All the Brewers have to do is go 3-3 against a couple bad teams and it's all over, and even if they go 2-4 the Mets and Cubs would still have to go undefeated the rest of the way just to force a tie, and we own the tiebreaker over both those teams.

Doom and gloom would happen if we got swept by the reds. But we are in such a good spot that even if we revert to the early season salvage game brewers we will be fine

That's pretty much what I was saying. In a nutshell, a whole lot would have to go wrong to miss the playoffs.

I know this won’t happen because the Brewers may be the most dramatic team of the last decade, but it sure would be nice if the Crew could go into Cincy and get two to take the pressure off. Going 1-2 starts to get a little hairy, especially if one of the trailing teams goes on a little run starting tonight.

I’m not hearing any gloom and doom, just not taking anything for granted.

Cardinals bringing out the whooping sticks on the DBacks.

DBacks announcers seem more interested in gushing over “Goldy’s” return to Arizona than the DBacks winning a game.

It's 2-1 in the top of the 3rd?? :ohwell

And of course as I was typing, Goldie homers to make it 4-1. I'm so PO'd that the Cubs couldn't win a single game in that series against the Cards...I REALLY envisioned the Crew being only a game(2 at most) back of the Cards starting tonight.
