meh.

I don't believe major league teams give up.

Players still want to succeed, sometimes their futures, and contracts, are in jeopardy.

I don't buy it when people say that teams, or players actually give up.

I suppose "given up" might be too harsh. They certainly look pretty listless playing out the string, though.

The Blue Jays beat the Yankees tonight. These guys are all professionals. I think it's easy for us to watch a game through a tv and see someone losing a game and say "they're not trying/they have no heart" and try to draw conclusions, but sometimes a team is just getting beat by someone playing better on a given day.

Excellent slider from Burnes! In such a weird season, let's have him be the World Series MVP?

I sure as heck would work him in over the next week 2-3 more times. After seeing that, I'm kinda bummed he's been sitting in the dugout for three weeks not doing much of anything.

I'm not.......he had outings better then that a number of times this year.......BA would fawn over him and say things like " maybe this is the turning point for Burnes" ... ...it never was.

This was the perfect scenario to get him an inning. If we have a 9 run lead again I'm glad to have him finish up.......I want him no where near anything meaningful this season.....and I'm a fan of his.

He just needs to start over fresh next season and hope this was all just a bad dream.

I agree. Life is so much bigger than this game. The guy has new baby twins if I'm not mistaken. I honestly think that kind of attitude says more about the person saying it than it does about the person it was directed at.

What does it say about me?

I love emotional, demonstrative players. Carlos Gomez is my favorite Brewer in recent memory. But Gomez's body language was aligned with his play and the team's play. And Gomez produced.

Arcia has been an easy out for 2 years and my read of his body language has me thinking that seems not to bother him.

Well, for one, you make judgements about people based on your perceptions of how someone should behave in a given situation. For another, you have no idea what is in Arcia's head. He may the type of person that shows something outwardly but he may very well be harder on himself than anyone behind closed doors. Maybe your an expert on reading body language but unless you are, you are just making a judgment about another person based on your opinion. You can decide what that says about you.

The Cubs outscored this Pirates team 47-16 last weekend. I totally get that they are all professionals, but I also think that sometimes teams get to a point in the season where perhaps their hearts aren't really in it anymore.

Yeah, I'm kinda hoping/banking on some lopsided wins over the next week. I think ending the season on a good note could be very valuable for Burnes going forward.

Pitching staff getting close to the best staff statistically since September 1. This is obviously our ticket to the dance. Just need some clutch hits, some more bloops to fall, a player like Grisham to get hot, and we can beat anybody. Nothing more important than a ridiculous bullpen. Trumps great starting pitching, hitting, whatever. And we got it AGAIN!!!!!!!

My judgment of Arcia is contextual. I am not critical of him because he seems happy. I am critical of him because he appears happy and indifferent while being the least productive player given as many opportunities as he has been given.

Since Arcia's debut, he's one of 185 players in MLB to amass 1500 plate appearances. His wRC+ ranks 183rd.

In the history of the Brewers franchise, he's dead last in wRC+ among Brewers with 1600 PAs.

This year--one of very few in the history of the franchise when they have a chance to make the postseason--he is having a historically bad season. He hasn't had a 2 hit game in nearly a month. His wRC+ is 58, the lowest of a qualifier in the history of Miller Park.

If any of us were the lowest performer in our industry, it wouldn't be unreasonable for others to find a happy-go-lucky spirit to be a little off-putting.

That’s the way to stomp on a team while they’re down.

Last game on the Weekend 10 pack tomorrow.

Aren’t you bad luck this year?

No. The last game against Arizona was bad but for the year I’m 10-2.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Fangraphs now has us with an 81% chance to make the playoffs.......how quickly things change this time of year with a few wins.......or a few losses.

What was it like 6% or less September 1? Why even bother with these projections with the brewers, last year September 1 it was ~ 5% to win the division. Pre-season last year 86 wins, off by 9-10, that’s a lot. This year 85 or 86, closer but gonna still be low. They need to skip the brewers, there just embarrassing themselves.

On 09/01 we were 70-66 & FanGraphs had our postseason odds at 12.8%. Of course going 14-4 since then will dramatically increase a team's playoff odds, that's just how math works.

The average error bar on projections is around 5-7 wins. Exceeding (or falling short) of a projection by 10+ games is not that uncommon, especially for teams with young players, strong defense & good bullpens, all of which ate more difficult to project & which the Brewers featured heavily in 2016-18 when they outperformed their projections by 10+ games each season.

This article by Jeff Sullivan, who has since been hired by the Rays, does an excellent job of breaking down just how useful/limited projections can be...

I'm not confused about your point and I'm not sure the above statement is really making a distinction. I mean, believe what you want to believe but you are making a judgement on an individual based on how you think he should behave given a certain set of conditions and you are doing so with very limited information. You have literally zero idea as to the accountability standards Arcia is held to behind closed doors and/or whether Arcia is meeting those standards. Maybe they have set the expectation with Arcia that they just need him to play good defense and offense isn't the important thing. If so, why wouldn't he be happy he is meeting the expectations of his employer. Your expectations don't really mean anything.

Right, he sucks. Nobody has argued that point. It sounds like you might have an issue with the Brewers playing him so much but that isn't his fault.

As if baseball is equivalent to the world us poor schleps live in. Players other than Arcia will and do get paid millions to literally suck at their jobs. Generally, I find that people who have an issue with other people being who they are have their own set of issues. It just seems a little intolerant to me.

a 12% projection means 12 times out of 100, they would make the playoffs. Why does someone say that's embarrassing? If the Brewers make the playoffs, that projection model wouldn't even be "wrong" per se, this would be one of the 12 times per 100 that the Brewers got hot and made it, in one of many possible variables.
