2019-09-19: Padres (Lucchesi) at Brewers (Lyles) [Brewers win, 5-1]

Eye Black
Well, if the Brewers want to keep their hopes of a division title alive (yes, they are still alive), this one is approaching "must win" territory. Making up three games in a ten game period will be difficult, but it isn't unheard of, especially since the Cardinals have what's going to be a very tough 4-game set at Wrigley this weekend, followed by a 3-game set with the DBacks, who are technically still alive, but not by much, then a final 3 gamer against the Cubs at home.

In the end, the Brewers have to take care of business, and let the rest fall as it will.

I’m puzzled. When I said yesterday that the Brewers’ path to the division title had gotten a lot rougher with the Brewers loss and the Cardinals win, you seemed to disagree with me. But now you’re basically saying exactly what I was saying. ;)

Not really ... I am saying this afternoon's game is nearing "must-win" territory, while having confidence that they will, in fact, win it. Call it hope or "pie in the sky" dreams or whatever, but I am banking on this team playing well in these last 10 games, putting 8 in the win column, and winning or being tied for the division lead with 90 wins. But yeah, for that to happen, this afternoon's game is pretty important.

Yeah, I just looked, and what I said above is pretty much spot on what I said last night, so I'm not getting where you are puzzled.

Aren't they all really important? If the Brewers want to make the post season in any position but the 2nd wild card they pretty much have to run the table or get very close.

If the Cardinals go just 5-5 Brewers need to go 8-2 to tie, 9-1 to win Division

If the Nationals go just 6-5, the Brewers would need to go 7-3 to tie for a Wild Card spot

I was just really confused about why this game hadn’t started yet.

Ya i don't understand the start time either. Maybe the thought process is the Padres get 2 hours heading back to the west coast so they are starting 2 hours later than usual? idk.

I kind of like it, allowed me to pick up the kids and take them to the game after school.

Do you agree that yesterday’s results made the Brewers path to the division title a lot rougher than it had been starting the day? If so, I don’t understand why you responded to me the way you did. Not a big deal.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Yes, they all are very important. But with each win, you just increase your margin of error. I think it's gonna probably take going 8-2 to have a shot at the division. Win today, and it's 7-2 ... and so on.

I don't think it made the path "a lot" rougher. It's already rough. I figured they'd have to come close to winning out before, and that's still the case. The margin for error just got a little tighter. I guess it depends on your definition of "a lot". Maybe I was reading between the lines incorrectly, but I assumed reading your posts that you believe that the Nationals beating the Cardinals with Scherzer on the hill was kind of a foregone conclusion. I guess I just saw it a different way. The Cards are good at home, so that result didn't surprise me. Just like seeing them drop 3 of 4 this weekend to the Cubs wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah, you read between the lines incorrectly. I know that nothing in baseball is a foregone conclusion, much less a playoff team losing a home game. But to make up 2 games in 11 is difficult enough because you need help, and some games present a better opportunity for help than others. And if you want to split hairs about what is “a lot”, OK. But I guess I do think that making up 3 games in 10 is a lot, or significantly, or substantially, or somewhat more difficult than making up 2 games in 11.

To quantify it, yesterday Fan Graphs had the Brewers at 12.8% to win the division and today it’s at 6.3%. Having your chances cut in half in one day seems pretty significant.

Back to today’s game, which is obviously important to the Brewers playoff hopes, as are all of the remaining games until they clinch or are eliminated.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

That might have been Hiura’s worst error yet. A tailor made double play ball results in no outs and two on.

I hope he works on his defense this winter.

Good luck, he is bad out there. Not like he hasn't known his defense has sucked for years.
