2019 Post-Season Roster

FVBrewerFan

Since I don't believe in jinxes, figured it was about time to give this a stab. (If it makes people feel better, this is early prediction IF they make the playoffs.)

Position players (12)

Grandal

Thames

Hiura

Arcia

Moose

Braun

Cain

Clark

Pina

Gamel

Spangenberg

Austin

Perez, Shaw don't make the cut.

Pitchers (13)

Woodruff

Lyles

Hauser

Hader

Pomeranz

Suter

Guerra

Peralta

Claudio

Jackson

Black

Albers

Gonzalez

Davies, Anderson don't make the cut. Tough call, but that's how I see it today. I think Woody/Lyles are locks for the rotation, Houser will have the 3rd spot if he finishes season strong. That leaves Gio for the "utility" pitcher. He can spot start, come in early if someone is getting shelled, used a loogy, etc. Albers was a tough choice too, I just think he'll make it. Davies/Anderson have no experience pitching out of the pen, and I think Brewers will look at it as post-season is no time to find out. Especially with the way the team is built, they'll want a bunch of pen arms that are a comfortable with.

I think you mostly got it right, though I'll note what I think will be different.

For starters, I doubt we carry 13 pitchers. Last year in the DS we carried 11 I think...with this staff I think 12 is more realistic. I also think Anderson is pitching well enough to make it. So with Anderson in, I would probably cut 2 of Suter, Jackson, Black, Albers, Gonzalez. Suter would only be cut if they value having a 12th guy with no restrictions...while Suter probably can't go back to back.

With the extra spot freed up for position players, I think Perez makes it over Shaw. It's also possible they go with Taylor for speed over Perez, but Perez is more likely due to positional flexibility. I figure Perez over Shaw for another RH bat.

I'll also add this only makes sense for the DS and CS. Any wildcard game will probably have maybe 9-10 pitchers and a ton of position players...which probably includes Shaw/Perez/Freitas/Taylor.

Don't see them going with 13 pitchers in the playoffs. My guess is Perez makes it, don't think Black makes the division/NLCS roster.

Albers has been pretty bad the entire second half, he is out again during the playoffs and Davies is in. Not sure what they do with Anderson, since there are so many lefties in the bullpen maybe they keep him around but just isn't any room.

Like KeithStone said the Wild Card is a whole different story as they reset after that game and don't need a bunch of starting pitchers on the Wild Card roster.

I assume that this is geared more toward a potential NLDS/NLCS than a one game WC round. If they get in on a WC, the 25 for that day will be tailored to simple availability. Any recently used starting from the prior two days will probably be left off, as well as any bullpen arm that would be considered "unavailable" that day or any position player off on a day to day injury. As Keith touched on, but I'm not sure if it would be 9-10 pitchers or less or more...it depends on how they planned to approach that game.

It probably wouldn't end up looking much different than what we have every day now.

Right. Should have said that at the top, this list is for NLDS/NLCS. Maybe they do go 13 position players/ 12 pitchers. If they do that, I guess it's Perez. But what does he really give you? I can see a scenario where you use a lot of pitchers and say "man I wish we had Black." Emergency PH appearance? I would almost rather take a flyer with Nottingham, at least he can make ball go far. No way they do that, just sayin'.

Yea, I could also see Davies over Albers. Would prefer it actually, just an unknown how he would do coming out of the pen.

My thought on wildcard is they'd first take the pitchers they for sure plan to use to get through 9 innings. Say something like 2-3 available starters, Hader, Pomeranz, Guerra. Then they'd add any position player they might potentially use. Then fill out their roster with a couple pitchers and at least 1 extra innings contingency arm. The number of extra pitchers probably depends on how many position players they deem potentially useful in a 1 game playoff. It would be really funny if we go into a game like this against the Cubs. We'd have 9-10 pitchers while Maddon has 13...and he'd use all but 2 to get through 8 innings.

I'm generally with you on being anti-Perez. What they will think he adds is he can play everywhere, he's sure handed, probably a hair above average speed, high baseball IQ, emergency catcher...allowing Pina to PH more freely, and you hope his atbat is against a lefty if/when he hits. I would forsee Perez either getting burned in the 4th inning of any playoff game, or not seeing the field until extra innings. Any key late inning AB would for sure go to someone else.

since it's all projected, really need to make this three separate threads.

wild card game roster (a full starting rotation isn't necessary)

nlds roster

nlcs roster

I think we can handle it under one thread? NLDS/NLCS would be the same projection. Could change later due to injury/ineffectiveness, but I would think we all know that. (Also, WC game doesn't matter as much because they'll have everyone they could possibly need and then some.)

I'd rather have Davies in the rotation and Houser able to put up multiple innings out of the pen than Houser in the rotation and Davies off the roster, particularly with Counsell's tendency towards Johnny Wholestaff.

I could also make the case for taking Houser off the post-season roster, as he's well over his innings count from last year (92.1 IP in 2018 vs. 119.2 IP in 2019, inclusive of time in the minors). I don't know if his back-to-back outings last week were a result of fatigue or a result of playing the Cubs & Cardinals, but it's something to watch for the rest of the month.

(Jackson, Black and Albers would be the guys fighting for the last spot(s) in the bullpen.)

Also presumably goes without saying, but Pina needs to clear the concussion protocol before he gets a roster spot.

wild card game is a 25-man roster. game 163 and anything beyond prior to the wild card game or nlds is a 40-man roster.

Correct.

But with a WC game you can deactivate the four rotation guys who aren't starting, and any reliever who would be unavailable. So kinda in between I guess.

a wild card roster should be drastically different from a division series roster. that's why i advocated for separate threads.

WC Roster

SP: (2) Woodruff, Lyles (will depend on how it's lined up the days leading up to it and if 163 is needed but these are preferable)

RP: (10) Hader, Pomeranz, Suter, Claudio, Guerra, Black, Peralta, Albers, Jackson, Houser

C: (2) Grandal, Pina

Inf: (6) Thames, Austin, Hiura, Arcia, Moustakas, Spangenberg

OF: (5) Cain, Braun, Gamel, Grisham, Taylor

I added Taylor for possible PR/defensive sub late in game

Claudio/Albers/Jackson/Black are strictly match up guys for potentially 1 batter.

I think the ideal lay out would be Woody 3 IP, Suter 2 IP, Guerra 1 IP, Pomeranz 1 IP, Hader 2 IP (not necessarily in this order)

But the days off for these games means that for the most part everyone is available every game outside of a couple of starting pitchers. The 3 game set is the only time you are really limited outside of SP as some of your bullpen is probably off limits.

Perez will make it over Austin. Maybe he shouldn't, but that's the way it will be.

I think I'd leave Guerra and Gonzalez and one of Black or Jackson off as well (whoever implodes in the last week).

It's crazy that Hader is the only guy on the staff truly guaranteed to make the NLDS roster, and we are less than 2 weeks from it's start.

I think Pomeranz is a pretty solid bet ;)

I'd say Hader, Pomeranz, Woodruff, Guerra, Lyles, and Houser are stone cold locks. A couple of those guys could maybe play their way off with a few nightmare outings between now and then but for the most part they're going to be there.

Really can't see Suter or Peralta being left off right now, either, but again things can change. Nelson and Taylor Williams have absolutely no shot and Devin Williams, Matt Albers and Jake Faria are really long shots. Jay Jackson and Alex Claudio are guys who really need strong performances down the stretch to solidify a spot. Corbin Burnes would need a string of several really outstanding performances these last 8 games.

Burnes has pitched 1 inning since the end of August. If there is a playoff roster he won’t be on it. Also, I’d be surprised if Claudio wasn’t on any post-season given the time crunch between WC game and NLDS
