2019-09-18 Other MLB Games with Playoff Implications - Nats and Cards at 12:15pm

It feels like the Cards are too good to let the division slip away. Not sure the Cubs can beat them enough times to help the Brewers.

The first 4 games are at Wrigley...the Cubs have weirdly played soooooo much better at home than on the road this year. I would actually be quite surprised if the Cubs didn't take at least 2. I'm kinda expecting a split personally.

Disagree - only because it wouldn't be the Cards choking it away - it would be either the Cubs or Brewers streaking past them. The Cards have the toughest schedule by far, and four of their 7 games against the Cubs will be played in Wrigley - which will play like a bandbox this weekend looking at the weather forecast. Having a pitching advantage doesn't mean alot when any decently hit flyball winds up in the seats.

Cards gonna likely win today because they've gotten EVERY fluky baseball break...typical.

The Nats have hit rockets all game long right at defenders, and the Cards just scored a run because a left fielder lost a flyball in the sun and a lefty hitter slapped a ball at the shortstop position that was vacated due to shifting.

My emotions are at the point now where this feels like a Brewers loss.

With a win tonight the Brewers will be 0.5 GB of WC1, sitting in WC2 at worst tied with the Cubs...not the worst thing in the world to give the Nats another loss before they're done playing teams ahead of the Brewers in the standings.

Brewers win, standings-wise we can't lose!

Luck was definitely on the Cardinals side today. Between the cheap hits and the ball lost in the sun, the Cardinals have been gifted several runs.

What ticks me off even more is that I have Scherzer on my fantasy team, which is now in playoffs. That ball lost in the sun cost 3 “earned” runs and guarantees a loss. With Yelich and Trout out I need pitchers to bail out the offense, and this doesn’t help.

BTW, I hate the Cardinals TV announcer. He may not be as big a homer as the Pirates announcer, but he’s close. I should have remembered that because this is one of the few afternoon games I could have picked the Nats announcers on Extra Innings.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

The fact that those are "earned" runs is just so, so stupid. I hate that. "Routine effort" is supposed to be the standard, but somehow it always takes more than "routine effort" to avoid getting blinded by the sun.

That inning is a microcosm of why I think the Nats are going to implode. Martinez basically just opted to give up an out and reduce run expectancy. Granted, they got the run, but even best case, Scherzer gets what? 3 more outs? With 6 left to get? Don't get it either.

Basically, Martinez is either too deferential to Scherzer, or he's got 0 faith in his bullpen. That doesn't seem like a recipe for winning late-season, pressure games.

Oh well ... the Nationals can go away too. No interest in facing one of those aces in a Wild Card game.

I think the chances of the Nats missing the playoffs are pretty low. With 3 games against Miami and then 8 home games they should be good for at least 90 wins.

If the Brewers get a wild card game it will be against the Nats, Cards, or Cubs. I would rather it be the Nats because a loss to either of the other two would be infuriating.

Still hoping for a Nats comeback today.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Ehh. Their schedule might be the toughest of the 4 contenders for 3 spots in the NL. When in Miami, they'll roll out only 1 of their 3 horses. There's definitely a chance Miami takes a game off them.

He clearly has more faith in Scherzer (who isn’t a complete automatic out) for one more inning than what he’d get from the bullpen. The Nats bullpen is their biggest weakness. Remember that 15-14 game.

Yeah, that 3 run HR taken away should do it. Too bad Martinez wasn’t out there.

Nats chances of missing are low but not THAT low.

Say Cardinals go 4-3 over the Cubs and 1-2 vs Dbacks.

Cubs Win tonight, take two from Pitt.

STL 90-72

CHC 88-74

Brewers finish 7-4...89-73

Yeah this is all unlikely, but crazier stuff has happened. If they haven't created some separation heading to the Cleveland series...and Philly will not lay down. I think WAS worst scenario is that STL and CHC split 4-3. It's moot if they finish strong but if they don't...man it's all just a headache.
