It just sucks to drop winnable games in September. The Brewers didn't have a ton of opportunities tonight, but they had enough that they should have been able to cash in on. Really wasted a very good pitching performance from Houser and the pen because the offense couldn't get anything going.

Lots of ugly swings tonight. The team could really benefit from a day off. Win these next four and recharge the batteries with the off day on Monday.

The path to the division title got a lot rougher today.

They weren't going to win out. You know that.

You're not wrong, but neither is he. 2 GB with 11 to play is just a lot different place to be than 3 GB with 10 to play. It's not impossible, but tough ask. Cardinals are a very good team.

Them beating Scherzer was kind of the tough blow today. You go into today liking the chances to gain ground and end up dropping one instead.

We can beat the Nats in a 1 game, as the Cardinals showed today Scherzer can be beat.

The Cardinals also go into a four gamer in a very tough place to play tomorrow. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Cards drop 3 of 4. If the Brewers win tomorrow and take care of business against the Pirates this weekend, they could very well go into the off day Monday near the top of the division. The Cubs and Cards will share 7 losses in some way in the next week and a half. If the Cards stumble this weekend, the division is still very much in play.

It’s not just the Brewers losing tonight, it’s the Cards beating Scherzer and the Nats.

I was hoping on Monday that the Brewers could gain at least one game on the Cards playing 3 at home against the Padres while the Cardinals were playing the Nats and their top 3 pitchers. Just marking time for 3 days with so little time left is a loss.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I think it’s fair to say this is the kind of game you likely win if Yelich is in the lineup.

As much as I’d like to see Yelich in the lineup it isn’t fair to say that. You never know if any one hitter is going to go 0 for 4 or just not be in a position to produce runs.

Yes, unfortunately. Although I do think his injury has motivated the team a bit the past week.

Yes. Someone in the outfield has to start to step up beside Braun. Grisham Cain Gamel whoever is out there needs to hit a bit more. No one is Yelich and you know it's going to be a drop off but in order to make it they are going to need to help Grandal Moose and Hiura.

That would have been ideal, but this certainly wasn't any sort of back-breaker. Cards are a tough team, especially at home. Whatever happens between the Cubs and Cards this weekend helps the Brewers in the end. The Brewers need to handle their business at home tomorrow and this weekend. If that happens, they will be sitting well going into the last 6 games. The Cards and Cubs will decide whether the Brewers will still be in the division race or aiming for the Wild Card come Tuesday.

Problem with rooting for the Cubs is that their other 3 games are against the woeful Pirates and you're likely not getting any help there.

Your best chance for the division is something like 4-3 in favor of the Cubs in their remaining games against the Cardinals. Even if that happens if you don't get help from the Pirates you need to go at least 8-2 in your last 10 either to win outright or just to even tie depending on how they finish with the Reds tonight. And even THEN you still need at least 1 Cardinal loss in Arizona to tie them, 2 to win outright.

Possible? Sure, but that's a whole lot of dominos to have to fall our way. The WC has much more mathematically friendly scenarios. We've been on a tear, but even just asking us for another .800 stretch these last 10 games is asking a lot.

Just have to put more balls in play. The last two games offensively is scary as they just cannot afford to go cold right now.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Been a really rough homestand for Grandal and I have to worry how fatigued he is right now. I wonder the same with Grisham as he has never had a baseball schedule this deep into the season. I don't expect Grisham in the lineup tomorrow and I'm also anticipating a Grandal day off, Pina returns and Austin at 1st.

I thought it was really odd to sit Braun and Cain together tonight. Feels like we could do a better job spreading off days out. I don’t like taking vets out of the lineup like that.

I get the logic of the decision, though. If you want to spell them, might as well do it against one of the nastiest righties the Crew is likely to face the rest of this season. As it happens, our lefty hitters didn’t acquit themselves well, either. That’s how the cookie crumbles.

I think it was two-fold thinking. Got a really tough RHP on the mound, with big career platoon splits. Also definitely planning on starting both Braun and Cain against the LHP tomorrow in the day game.

I did not have any issue with the lineup but obviously they did not get the job done. We've talked at length about the oversaturation of lefties in this lineup but with the Yelich injury that has changed our outlook vs RHP quite a bit. Grisham is still finding his way and obviously Shaw has had a disastrous season so the only reliable lefty bat you're really left with is Moose.

Anyone else notice that the call on the grisham play was 100% incorrect? The brewers should probably contest that play...

From what I heard it was 100% a judgment call. Right or wrong there was no reversing it once it was made.

Im not sure how you can judge that grisham impeded the catcher in anyway when the ball deflected off him. I think they must have ruled it that since it deflected, he was automatically out, which is absolutely not correct.

I think the likely ruling is that by kicking the ball, Grisham impeded the catcher from fielding it cleanly, which then caused him to hurry the throw to 1st. It sucks for the Brewers, and the umps are kind of forcing a square peg into a round hole on the enforcement, but in the end I think they ruled it correctly.

Well, at least the Cards lost last night so we didn't lose WC ground.

I don't think if we are honest with ourselves we knew we weren't going to go undefeated the rest of the regular season. Tonight the Cards play the Cubs in Chicago. If we take the Padres series today we'll gain on one of them. We just have to keep winning as many games as possible and we should be okay. *fingers crossed*
