Hard to expect much from an organization that thought trading a star 24 year old outfielder, a potential Cy Young starter and a top 100 prospect for Chris Archer was a good idea.

Probable top 5 worst trade in baseball history. But to be fair Their entire rotation has been absolutely decimated by injuries this year.

Crew just has to hang in until Friday. If we are 1 or 2 back with 10 to go, I feel pretty good. Hope Cincy can get a split at Wrigley and go from there.

I hate that the Cubs play the Cardinals in the final series of the season. I don't think the Cardinals are going to have anything to play for in that series.

The Pirates should be moved from the NL to the PCL next year where their talents are much more suited.

That would remove tanking as an option.

Nico Hoerner is annoying.

That highlights why the Brewers really need at least one this weekend or they are going to be in a real tough spot.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

One of the worst calls you’ll ever see in the Nats-Braves game.

Culberson squaring to bunt with runners on first and second and nobody out takes a fastball just under his right eye. As he’s being carted off the field, the umpire at first informs the Braves he called it a srrike, ruling that Culberson bunted at the ball, which he clearly didn’t.

Talk about adding insult to injury.

Nats losing again vs Braves 5-1 top 7. Nats play teams with something to play for, outside of 3 gamer in Miami, the entire way, including ending the year with the tribe. This could be our in. Fitting if we play the Cubbies in Wrigley again, the winner taking on the dodgers.

No doubt that it was a strike. He never pulled the bat back, and ball only missed it by two inches. Not sure what he was doing. Almost like he froze, and didn't know what to do.

Are you sure that’s the rule? The applicable MLB rule says that a strike is a pitch that is “struck at by the batter and missed”. Just holding the bat out isn’t “striking at” the ball.

Of course, the batter froze with a fastball heading right for his face.

closecallsports.com has a write-up on it since there was an ejection on the play. Very good website to follow for all ejections and unusual plays.

This writeup does cite the rules I was looking at. Maybe there is some kind or additional interpretation beyond the rules, but based just on these rules I would interpret that play as an HBP. I don’t think Culberson was trying to meet the ball with the bat, and he didn’t strike at the ball. He was trying to duck out of the way.

Using the reasoning from the Lorenzen play involving the Brewers last year (linked in the closecalls item) this should have been a HBP. “No intent = No bunt”. If the umpire thought Culberson was trying to bunt at the ball, I strongly disagree.

I wonder if the league will say anything about that, because that interpretation was pretty harsh.

ETA- the first base umpire, the one who called it a strike after the Nat’s manager asked, said that it was a strike because Culberson “offered at the pitch”. That sounds to me like a different way of saying he “struck at” the ball. So, again, I think it was a terrible call.

Culberson had the bat out in a position to bunt the ball and never pulled it back. It wasn’t that he was still trying to bunt the ball when he got hit in the face, it was that he never made an attempt to pull it back and therefor “offered at the pitch.” From the replays, it looked like the right call to me.

The Lorenzen play isn’t comparable to me because a.) he made contact and fouled the ball and b.) the umps ruled he was pulling the bat back (which I disagree with, but that isn’t the point).

Based on your interpretation of a strike on a missed bunt, every batter should just stick the bat out there and hope the ball hits it. That way, they aren’t “trying to meet the ball with the bat” and if the pitch is out of the strike zone, it would be a ball.
