2019-09-14: Brewers (Lyles) at Cardinals (Flaherty) [Brewers win, 5-2]

Eye Black

I don't want to overstate the important of finding a way to win this game, but it would be huge on several fronts:

1) Obviously WC race, stay 1 back and don't get too far behind, then the absolute worst you can end up after this unfavorable series and the Cubs' favorable series is 2 back. You're also starting to put some heat on the Nats at 2.5 back, so a possible backup option comes into play.

2) Division race, suddenly you're 4 back again. Not insurmountable. 6 back with 14 to play, yeah it's probably over.

3) Even if you don't WIN the division, it's important to keep it close. Want the Cardinals having something to play for up to the very end. We wanted the Cubs to lose of course, but them inching closer to the Cardinals with 7 games remaining against them is not necessarily a bad thing.

Tie game, got to find a way to win this one today.

The Cards are going to be a dangerous team in the playoffs.

That pitching staff is good enough to keep them in games against anyone.

I still think the Dodgers are the team to beat in the NL.

I agree.... But the one team in the NL that could give them a run is the Cards.

Most earned runs since nearly June.

He has surrendered 6 runs to the Brewers since the start of August. EVERY start not against the Brewers in that span just ONE RUN given up. To get those same 6 runs given up you would have to add up his previous 11 starts against other teams.

Are they letting Lyles come out for the 6th?

Edit: Yep

If you can get a full 6 out of him I think you have to call it a night and be thrilled with it.

Obviously Hader is in the plans tonight, but the Cardinals have almost exclusively righties in the lineup, so Pomeranz, Suter, Claudio may not be great matchups. Pick 2 of Guerra, Peralta, Black, Jackson.
