2019 NFL miscellaneous news

LouisEly
I was living in Vikings’ country in 2009 and their fans were insufferable. They were convinced Favre was going to deliver them a Super Bowl victory and that he would go into the HOF as a Viking (even though that’s not a thing). They ordered custom #4 jerseys with ‘Thanks Ted’ on the nameplate as if TT had somehow bungled the QB situation in Green Bay and gifted them their QB of destiny. I’ve never rooted harder for a team to lose. And TT handled that situation masterfuly by hanging on to his QB of destiny and using the pick they acquired from the Jets to trade up for Clay Matthews.

One of the few things Ted did right, but I digress.

I was watching the game at a bar and I had friends there who claimed to be Packers fans wearing Favre Vikings jerseys rooting for the Vikings and also friends rooting hard against Favre for being a traitor. Right before that play, me and a friend sitting next to me called the interception and the Favre fans were like "Yeah, whatever". When he did indeed threw the interception I stood up, smiled, and just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The look on their faces were priceless.

After Favre signed with the Vikings, it gave me alot of satisfaction telling their fans who were thumping their chests that he would eventually break their hearts in the end just as he did to Packers fans the previous eight years in the playoffs and being mocked by them for saying such a thing, and then it actually happening.

49ers/Seahawks got flexed to SNF next week, so we'll know going into the game whether Seattle is playing for our HFA or not.

Seahawks are going to have to sign a couple street FA to play running back. Sounds like Carson, Penny, and Prosise are all season ending injuries.

The Seahawks got beaten soundly by a bad Cardinals team at home. Another nice reminder that no team in the NFC is unbeatable this year, and that inexplicable bad losses to inferior teams don't happen only to the Packers.

Everyone (including myself) thinks tonight is a tough one, but if they win, the Packers are in outstanding shape.

The seahawks actually have looked bad the past three weeks, some of it is definitely injury related but that's what happens in football. 49ers defense has been average at best since october aside from the Packers game. I dont see GB beating the saints in new Orleans, but a cold or sloppy weather game at Lambeau in January makes it interesting if they match up in the playoffs.

A win tonight in any way, shape, or form is enormous in terms of playoff positioning.

I think this is very accurate... this team may not be able to beat the Saints or 49ers in the playoffs, but getting those games at home adds at least a variable that can work in the Packers favor. Goal 1, win the division and get a home game, goal 2 bye, goal 3 as many games at home as possible.

Seahawks are so thin at RB they are looking at bringing Marshawn Lunch back. I think their top three running backs are out for the year

I suspect a number of you are way ahead of me on this, but I was playing around on the espn playoff machine yesterday looking at our playoff seeding situation.

1 seed - we win out and Seattle wins

2 seed - we win out and SF wins, or we win one of two and NO loses next week.

3 seed - we win either of the next 2 games, or we lose both and Minnesota loses week 17 to Chicago.

6 seed - we lose both of our next 2 games and Minnesota wins both.

The only matchup I truly dread is going back to SF. I don't love the idea of going to NO, but at least it's a dome stadium and Rodgers should have a chance in that type of venue. The playoffs will be a bit annoying no matter what. If we get the 1 seed, SF would be the 5 seed and promptly destroy Philly...and I assume NO would beat Minn. So we'd have to face SF and one of Seattle/NO...if we can even get by SF. A 2 seed means NO at home and probably SF on the road. 3 seed means Minn at home, NO on the road, and NFC west on the road. If we get the 6 seed, I'm just going to mentally forfeit the season. No way can we run that. It's certainly not going to be easy, but these scenarios show how critical that 1 seed is for our chances.

For what it's worth, I think the 6th seed just changes the order and venue if we are the 3rd seed. At Minn, At West, At NO

For any realistic chance of a deep run, we need to win tonight and next week and secure a bye. Failing to do tonight so puts us firmly in the high percentage likelihood for a 3 seed, meaning no week off and a tough game against a team we will have just lost to. Basically go get yourself a division champion Tshirt which is cool I guess after a couple years without it, but don't expect much beyond that.

On the other hand, not only would a win tonight put us firmly in the driver's seat for a bye, but it would give us that quality road win we've been lacking and really give us some confidence heading into January.

The Seahawks haven't come under the scrutiny the Packers have for whatever reason but they are a pretty damn similar team with an arguably shoddier defense. Wilson > Rodgers this season, but that team has been squeaking out crappy wins all year much like GB. They've been doing it less convincingly, IMO. The Packers win close, but many of the games are never really in doubt. Seattle has been pulling rabbits out of the hat all year.

It's the Saint and 49ers above the field but that doesn't mean they'll come out of it. If the Packers win tonight they have a pretty favorable path.

Seattle has that really high quality road win in San Francisco which is probably the main reason they get a pass. If we can get our own tonight, I think we'll start to be taken a little more seriously; if not, it's just going to confirm what people already think of us as a contender.

Agreed on home field and a bye being critical.

I think you can really nerf the saints quite a bit if the game is played at Lambeau...hopefully in snow or sub 20 degree temps. 38+ year old qbs not named Tom Brady do not fare well in bad weather. That team shrinks up immediately if Brees doesn't play like a top 3 overall QB on a given night. Their defense is still very good, so a game in Lambeau probably becomes a low scoring slugfest...but at least we'd have a fighting chance in that game.

SF if we face them will be tough no matter what. We probably need the o-line to have the game of their life, and a few breaks from the refs...to have a real shot in that one.

And that's part of the reason I preferred #2 to #1. The #1 seed was likely to get the NFC West runner-up in the second round. Of course that's all out the window now if the Packers win and both those teams finish 12-4.

It's hard to imagine Seattle sweeping SF as well. But the thought that Seattle and SF might both have to play Wild Card weekend is pretty fun. The Vikings aren't a sleepwalk opponent either. I mean, neither is Philly on the road either. NFC playoffs are going to be super fun.

To me there's really little difference between 2 and 1. The difference between 2 and 3 is much bigger because now you're talking about a bye team and a team that needs to play a WC game.

If they can win their last two and clinch a bye I'll be thrilled with that and will care very little if they win HFA or not. All things equal I guess I'd prefer the #1 but you could easily argue the 49ers at Lambeau is a worse matchup than the Saints at Lambeau.

It would be comforting to get every opponent at home in the playoffs but I don't get a sense that Lambeau is a big homefield advantage this season.

In my opinion, by far the most appealing path to the Superbowl is a 1 seed and a Vikings win over Seattle in the first round. We would then face the Vikings in Lambeau, and the winner of New Orleans vs SF/Phil...most likely to be New Orleans. That game would be in Lambeau though, so now you have a 40 year old qb playing in bad weather. It's certainly not an easy path, as you've noted all these teams are pretty darn good...but I would take this path every time over facing the NFC West twice.

How big of a meltdown would there be here if the Packers had lost at HOME to the Dolphins today like the Patriots did? I get that we struggled on the road against the Lions but we’ve always seem to have issues there going back to the Silverdome (could be longer but my fan memory only encompasses the Silverdome and Ford Field) but still managed to pull out the W.

We won and still have comments about being the worst 13-3/1 seed/2 seed ever.

I'm sure they are indeed melting down in New England over it. I don't know what that has to do with us. I'm glad we pulled it off, obviously.

They're clearly a very weak high seed in historical terms. There's nothing wrong with discussing that. I'm glad they have the opportunity that they have in front of them anyway and if they find a way to put it together and make a run I'll be happy to be first in line to admit I was wrong.

Honestly, me.

Buying an All Pro team doesn't translate to chemistry and instant success, especially with the lack of maturity and discipline of their players and their head coach.

Same. There was absolutely nothing exciting to me about that team. I didn't know what their record was last year but I would've guessed they'd be 6-10 this year. There's a team that does that every year and I can't remember it ever working.

I don’t think there were many people making those claims that were looking for a discussion about being a historically weak high seeded team. It seemed that most were pretty well entrenched on the thought that they are the worst ever and have been stating stuff like that for weeks.

This is literally Dan Snyder's legacy. The Vikings tried this for several years as well. I can't recall a team that won a Super Bowl in March even making a dent the playoffs the following January, if they even made the playoffs at all.

I guess I'm not sure what your point is on this. The best thing you can say about them is that they find a way. Their offense is mediocre, their defense is hit and miss and their special teams was historically terrible up until the last few weeks. They've won a ton of close games and there's just not anything they do particularly well.

Are they the worst 13-3 top 2 seed ever? I dunno, it's all subjective but they would be in the discussion. That's not being down on the team, that's just the reality of their journey this year. It's still great to be a top 2 seed 13-3 team but I don't think it does any good to bury our heads in the sand when it comes to our deficiencies.

That said, just giving yourself the opportunity can be enough...the Ravens weren't a particularly great team when they won it all, just got a run of great play from Flacco.
