2019 NFL miscellaneous news

LouisEly

It does have its drawbacks and the numerous times the offense has either stalled out or gone backwards right on the edge of FG range is as bad as a turnover.

I agree with basically everything you say about the Packers, but this isn't true. The interception is the most statistically influential play in the NFL and the Packers have thrown two. Even fumbles don't influence the outcome as much, because they're more or less random events. A dead drive at the 45 is still a punt, it doesn't influence the game nearly as much as a TO. If there's a smoking gun for how the Packers are 11-3, it's the 9 giveaways all year.

I'd buy into that if the Packers hadn't looked a certain way literally the entire year. They are just not an impressive team in the kindest terms. They have very little battle testing on the resume. You can legitimately argue that today was their best win, a division opponent that had started to play much better football.

They dodged Mahomes, they caught teams like Minnesota at opportune times in the year, I don't know if Carolina has won a game since playing them. In their ONE clear-cut blue Chip matchup, they got embarrassed. They didn't just lose, they were humiliated. There just hasn't been a "wow" game. It's not to say they're a bad team, they're a good one. But it is the reason for trepidation when it comes to thinking they could win the NFC.

I'm OK with them not winning it. Totally at peace with any playoff outcome. I just really don't think they're a Super Bowl team.

Fair enough, but then tell me what Seattle's signature win was so far this season. The 27-24 OT win at Frisco probably is, but that could have easily wound up a loss for them. The rest of their season, they've had a horseshoe up their rear moreso than GB with alot of close wins against meh teams, and they got pummeled in a couple of their losses, too. The Rams just pasted them and they wound up beating a rudderless Carolina team by 6 today.

Let's see how next sunday goes against the vikes...it sure would be sweet to win that game no matter the score as the playoff picture shakes out.

The point isn't really that Seattle could have lost to the 49ers, it's that they went up against a Super Bowl quality team and look like they belonged in that game, as they did against the Saints. When we had that opportunity, we got blown out.

The game in Minnesota is the second biggest test so far this season being on the road. I agree that if they beat the Vikings next week I may feel a lot differently about their direction. It's an enormous game as it likely essentially also a wild card game win for us if we can take care of business in Detroit.

I'm not all that confident about coming out of there with a W the way we have played recently and being in an extremely hostile environment. However, we may catch a break if Cook doesn't play and hopefully the Cousins in primetime stuff turns out to be real.

Not trying to call you out specifically, but that last sentence is why I have to chuckle at these folks who feel the need to dissect every single win as "not good enough". If the Packers win on Monday, the excuse will be, "well that didn't count enough because Dalvin Cook didn't play", just like they did with Mahomes out. Until they beat the Patriots on the road by 25, people are going to find excuses as to why they can't call their wins "good enough".

I don't quite understand why the Packers have to "look the part". Can't we just enjoy that they are winning? If they go one and done in the playoffs, so be it. It'll be a successful season in my opinion. I don't understand this obsession with having to look good enough to win in the NFCG in October and November and now early-December. Worry about the NFCG when it gets here, but for goodness sakes, enjoy the ride while you're on it.

The problem is that this year, with this team, a lot of those caveats are legitimate. You can't gloss over them dodging Mahomes like it wasn't a big deal. It is. You can't say Carolina was a good win, they're 5-9. If Dalvin Cook doesn't play, that's a huge deal. We'd do the same thing if we lost a game without Adams, like people did when we lost to the Eagles and he missed the last drive.

I'd still be impressed if they won though, Cook or not.

We agree that the caveats are legitimate, I just don't see it as a problem. They don't need to be paper champions in October. Just earn your way to the tournament and see what happens. Enjoy the ride man and fret about February in February, should it get here.

I'm just not that concerned with the #1 seed, mainly because I think the odds of it are extremely remote (would literally take a 49ers/Seahawks tie next week if the Seahawks don't lose to the Cardinals today).

If we can get a #2 seed and the bye that goes with it I'd be totally thrilled. And even at #2 you still have a chance of not playing on the road. In such a loaded playoff field I could easily see the 49ers or Seahawks going into Seattle/San Francisco in the divisional round and winning on the road.

The FOX pregrame just ran a story on the Colts’ defection from Baltimore. I recall the 30 for 30 special from 10 years ago, but otherwise was far too young to recall the event first hand. A few thoughts:

1) If a state tries to seize a privately owned team through eminent domain, I’ll automatically side with the owner (even if they’re a greedy dope).

2) My hometown of 250,000 (pop. of Brown County around 2000) funded a major stadium renovation with a 15-year 1/2% sales tax. What the heck was Baltimore’s problem?

The way the Saints use Taysom Hill is the way I thought the Patriots would use Tim Tebow (as a 3rd QB/TE/RB and ST guy). Just think of how much easier it is for the Saints to set their game day roster. I wonder if Tebow was ever offered such an opportunity with the Pats? He could have won 3 rings as the first modern ‘super-back.’

14-0 Titans. If we win tomorrow and the Saints lose would that clinch a first round bye?

I was looking at it yesterday and got down to strength of victory tiebreaker, I didn't look it up but I think Saints must beat us there if they lose this week and win next while Packers do the opposite.

The Saints currently have a better SOV than the Packers (0.475 vs. 0.432). I assume beating Detroit wouldn’t help much, so the Packers still probably need to beat Minnesota to get a bye.

(At least I think that’s how it works).

The Saints losing to the Titans would likely do little to nothing for us. We would gain a game but lose the tiebreaker advantage. We cannot clinch a bye with a win and Saints loss.

If they lost to the Panthers next week that would be much more beneficial as we would keep the conference tiebreaker.

Well, with the Saints winning they pretty much puts us in the #3 as I don't see us beating the Vikings and the Saints losing next week. Wins matter, not tie breakers.

?

Tiebreakers matter a lot if you're tied. But yeah, it's going to be tough sledding winning in Minnesota. We'll see.
